Inevitability

The Commander paced up and down in his fleet carrier office. He knew this day would come. It always does. The black. The continual voice at the back of his mind that he could drown out but never silence. It had been getting louder lately and he was struggling to ignore it.The last few weeks back in the bubble had been the best he had spent in civilisation for a long time. He smiled to himself as he thought of these good times. They were things that pilots as long in the tooth as he was had done years ago but being an explorer he often missed out and always returned to the bubble behind his peers and then tried to catch up.
He'd achieved the honorary rank of Rear Admiral in the Federal Navy finally allowing him to get the Federal Corvette. He'd achieved the rank of Viscount in the Imperial Navy, a good way towards being able to get the legendary Cutter. He'd bought a Fleet Carrier and had used it to support his humanitarian efforts, rescuing thousands of people from Thargoid threatened stations. He'd taken part in directly killing Thargoids and had even been involved in the AXI birthday event. One of the greatest events that mankind had seen in the last few decades. He'd increased his fortune by billions through trading, smuggling, bounty hunting, and some not so legal work too.
He'd even found a group of decent pilots that had offered him a home and friendship that suited him well and he'd even won the inaugral racing event, finishing 1st in an Imperial Eagle, boosting over 930 m/s! He frowned as he thought of the engineering that had gone into that little beast.
But despite all this, the call of the stars was louder and louder.
He finished his drink and put the empty mug on his desk.
"Get the T9 ready. We have a carrier to fill" he said to the microphone as he pressed the button for his deck crew, "We're going to be out for a while".
