Engineering in the Colonia Region

Although I only have access to three of the four new engineers who've set up shop around Colonia, I've been making as much use of them as possible. Now, I have a few pinned blueprints from my time in the Core Systems, but that doesn't get me all the way to where I want to be in terms of modifying my ships. And, to be sure, these engineers can only handle G1 upgrades...but it's a start. As they gain more experience, that will improve. But, mercy, I've taken every one of my ships docked at Colonia Dream to get all manner of upgrades. I wonder how many other commanders are doing the same? This may be much slower going. I get how reputation affects whether or not you become aware of, and then an invitation from, the engineers. I can't help but think, though, that if you only get access to these engineers after having a certain amount of interaction with other engineers in the Core, why would you wait until you're all the way out here to engineer your ship? Wouldn't you just take care of it while you're back in the Core Systems? There probably needs to be alternate ways to gain access to these engineers.
So, I did do a little more engineering to my Chieftain and decided to take it out and do some bounty hunting in a high resource extraction area. Hands down, this is the best ship in my fleet. For doing anything other than exploring, the Chieftain just mops the floor with anything else. I talk to a lot of commanders who are now swearing by the Krait, but I've giving up doing anything near acceptable with that thing. I wasn't in the Chieftain cockpit for more than five minutes and I fell in love with that ship all over again. Very fast, very agile and very powerful. I became convinced that I just need to gut my Krait of engineered modules, stick stock ones in there and sell it.
