Looking Forward

Kodeyne stared at herself in the mirror, shuddered and splashed cold water onto her face. Back to the mirror. Seeing the blond hair, tied back, the face adorned with skinprint tattoos. She couldn’t have imagined herself like this a few months ago.Months! And what a month the last one had been, what a blast! She’d travelled to the Pleiades, raiding Thargoid sites for meta-alloys. She’d worked her ass off for the Federation, the Empire, the Alliance….and still you got derision. It seemed so hard to get anywhere, with any of them. But that had not mattered. She smiled, remembering one of the mysterious TR’s messages.
“When you get sick of people – and trust me, you will – go explore. You don’t even have to go all that far. Ninety-nine percent of the time, you’ll get so bored of scanning that you will want to give it up. But it’s worth it for that one percent when the universe taps you on the shoulder and shows you something so amazing you’ll be utterly gobsmacked. First time I saw a neutron star, I just sat and stared. But for you, there’s an even better reason. Universal Cartographics pay out one hell of a lot better now than when I started out. Don’t worry about what ship you use. I spent a lot of time exploring in a Cobra. But get yourself an Asp Explorer as soon as you can, you can go further, faster, and it’s just such a good piece of kit. See the attachment for how I fitted mine out. All the best! TR.”
And she had an Asp. Exploring had paid off, and she wanted more. Wanted to see that one percent, and with Devil’s Daydream, soon she would. She hadn’t got rid of Bad Kitty, oh no…the trusty Cobra would still come in useful. Now she felt ready to take on the galaxy…sort of. She walked from her quarters to the bridge and slowly sat down in the pilot’s seat, trying not to get too excited. There were still obstacles to be overcome, problems to solve. But now she felt that she could do it. Things were looking up.
