The Craziness

Hi everyone,I got your last letter mom and I am sorry it has taken so long to write back. I have finally had a chance to sit down and breathe but I wanted to let you know that I am doing okay. The last two weeks have been absolute madness around here as I am sure you have heard. I helped with the evacuations for the better part of a week when they finally were able to stabilize the station and get all the fires under control. You would think that running in and out of the burning and debris filled docking bay would make one numb to such horrors but every single time I lined up on that slot and glided in, it was like seeing it for the first time and it is something that I will never forget.
Now that they have everything stabilized, they are in repair mode so it was time to turn my good old Type-9 into what it was meant to be. I guess I just find it funny now as I sit behind the stick of this graceless brick jumping from port to port. When you and dad retired and headed for Colonia, I vowed that I would focus on exploring, going out into the black, thousands of light years from civilization. I was going to visit every corner of the galaxy and map new and interesting worlds. I mean, I have done some of that and the Pilot Federation has found my exploits worthy of making me an Elite so I must be somewhat good at it right? I mean, I have my name as first discovered on several dozen systems, found the Guardians, explored Thargoid ruins so I have done something. But there is still so much more, I need to see Sag-A*, get out to see you in Colonia, travel to Beagle Point.. I mean I don't even have 100,000 lightyears under my belt yet.
All this to say that with all that exploring left to do, here I am flying my loaded down brick with several hundred tons of cargo and it honestly feels good. I guess when you are born into this life, it is not something you can just turn off and forget. I remember that time that Dad and I spent a week just hauling water and food packs from Procyon to Shapash to help with the famine relief. It was a rewarding experience and certainly wasn't a lucrative one but it was the right thing to do. There is a little more money in running repair parts but honestly it is not about the money and I come out with enough for my triple r's and docking fees at the end of the day, oh and to pay my fighter pilot. Yes I hired a pilot and I can already hear Dad griping about me wasting my money on some stick jockey but Kerryanne has bailed me out a couple of times. Its nice to have someone to talk to when running drop and dump runs. And it is getting hairy out here.
I guess that is the biggest difference from when you guys were here. Pirates were a problem but you could usually fire a few pulse lasers in their direction and scare them off long enough to jump out. It is different now. I don't know if people are smelling blood in the water with the attacks on the Empire... and the assassination of Prince Harold, but flying in and around Imp space has been exciting to say the least. I am able to hold my own and once I have helped get these stations back on their feet maybe I'll go out and thin the pirate ranks a bit. Hell, I am well on the way to making Elite status in trade so mine as well go for the triple crown right. I have managed to make it to competent which is saying something for me I suppose.
Anyways, I just wanted to write you back and let you know that I am indeed in the middle of this craziness but I am doing well. I am sure Dad will be glad to hear that I am 'running tons' again and I'll keep at it for a while until I get bored or the money dries up... or the black beckons me back.
Talk to you soon,
Jacob.
