During the months leading up to the DW2 Expedition launch I'd made many contacts with fellow commanders, engineers, mechanics and flight crew who were all doing the same thing, finely tuning their ships, shaving off weight, doing test flights and saying their farewells to loved ones. Today, 13th Jan 3305, I met back up with a few of these brave individuals that would be part of the now 13,000 strong fleet. We gathered at Brooks Point in Pallaeni and chatted whilst the anticipation and excitement grew till the announcement was made over the net and we all made our way to the DW1 Tourist Beacon for launch.
I've never seen so many super cruise trails, even with my sun glasses on I had to shield my eyes. The countdown began shortly after we all aligned to the first system enroute. Then came the call of "engage" followed by the song "Come and Lend A Hand for the Distant Worlds" which blared over the comms system, the hairs on the back of my neck stood on end as I hit the hyperspace jump button and slammed the throttle to 100%. Ships all around me started to jump, streaks of light appearing everywhere followed by booms as they jumped, my drive finished spooling and I joined them all in witch space. My heart was beating hard in my chest and I felt a broad smile form on my lips, this was it, it was happening, the journey had begun.

This week has been staggering, the things I have seen already, amazing sights that were here all along, that I have been missing, cooped up in my mining ship, closed off in my own little world in Delkar, oblivious to the wonders that were a mere week away in travel.
The route took us first through several systems that had a great view of Shapely 1 or The Fine Ring Nebula, a planetary nebula, circular in shape and purple and blue in colour, my first nebula that I have seen this close, if you can believe it! After taking plenty of photos and getting my head round the scanner software, the next stop was The View in HR 6164.
The first explorers that found this system must have been rubbing their eyes and hitting their sensor suites in disbelief. An O class star, a neutron star and a black hole in one system! You can easily see why tourists flock here with it only being 1.4k ly from Sol. The Planet ABC 1 has a tourist beacon which had the most unbelievable view (hence its name) of the planetary rings and the neuron star, all bathed in a surreal purple pink hue. Luckily, I did notice beforehand that the planet has a moderately high gravity of 3.30 G, so gently eased my ship down at a low angle, even then it still hit the surface with force making me wince as the landing gear audibly creaked at the impact.
During the last 24 hours I have heard over the Fleet's comms network that the planet has already claimed several commanders lives due to the high Gs, highlighting how important it is to ensure we concentrate, plan everything we do meticulously and not to take this undertaking lightly. My thoughts are with their friends and family at this difficult time for them.
Whilst in system I slowly approached the Neutron Star between the high energy jet cones. I tell you I was sweating buckets, one wrong move to the left or right and I'd be in the cone, ripped apart by gravitational forces. I still can't believe there are crazy explorers that use these things to super charge their FSDs. Not for me, well not yet anyway, never say never eh? I managed to get to the Tourist station that overlooks the star and the flickering jet cones. I sat there for an hour and ate my food for the day before heading onward in my journey towards Cycladia and Labirinto.
