LOG - 004
________
I fluttered my eyelids, I could hear the raindrops pelting my mask as I sat up to gather my bearings. I wiped my visor, looking around.
I sat in a puddle of mud and water, a few inches deep. The Pioneer was to my left, its cargo ramp still open from earlier. What was left of the Krait MkII was no longer smoldering from the crash, but the smell lingered.
I rolled onto all fours and then got to my knees, slowly, I stood up. Stumbling back a bit, I took a quick look around again, still in a groggy daze. I quietly stumbled my way back to the Pioneer.
I thought nothing while I walked, I felt nothing. I wiped my visor a few times to get the water off of it but that was all. By the time I reached the ramp I was already exhausted, moving slowly so as not to slip on the slick metal. The ramp closed behind me.
I heard the cargo hold re-pressurize. I slowly took off my helmet and tossed it to the side. I used the wall as support, wheezing a little, as I made my way to the bathroom.
I grabbed onto the mirror and stared at myself, I stared for a while, never thought, just stared. Eventually, I fell backward and slouched against the wall. I sat there.
I started crying, no… I wept. I wept for I was stupid. I was disgusting, I was a disgrace. I wept for I was lost, I had nothing, I gained nothing, there was nothing. I wept for my life to be over, I wept for everything to become nothing.
I wept for hours.
I wiped my nose and stood back up, walking over to the tool cabinet, sliding it open, and grabbing my arc cutter and crowbar. I turned and grabbed my helmet giving it another quick wipe before I put it on, pressing the ramp button.
The Maelstrom raged still, nothing had changed. I walked toward the Krait MKII, now seeing the charred ID plate: ‘The Refraction’. I crouched to reach the underside of the ship.
I spotted the cargo ramp, flicking the cutter to life…
