RESCUE PILOTS! Unsung Heroes of the War-Part 1 of 5 "Attack on Titan's Daughter" by Derek Radar

PART 1: Attack on Titan’s Daughter

I first met the crew of Unrest six years ago, the very week my career transformed from a leather-shoe journalist covering business to what I’m known for today–covering the Thargoid War from the front lines for Galnet, doing whatever it takes to get you the truth.

Six years ago, I was on Titan’s Daughter when the Thargoids attacked the station. At the time I worked for MinersNet, and I was covering a potential bombshell (for the mining industry) acquisition at an extraction company’s annual meeting. And then the world as I knew it–as we knew it–turned on its head. And then the Thargoids came.

Appearing literally from thin air, they quickly overwhelmed the meager defense forces on hand. I was one of the very first journalists to broadcast live what was happening in the Pleiades, the first images of the Interceptor variants in action, and the devastating efficiency of their weaponry. Tens of thousands of people clamored to leave, and no one knew if anyone was actually coming. And all the while, the station kept disintegrating around us with no official word from anyone.

Then, as now, the Pilot’s Federation answered the call. I stayed on the station as long as I dared. Ships were coming, but they were mostly geared for combat with scant room for people. Evacuation was slow-going. My salvation came in the form of Unrest–an old Python recently converted from a mining vessel–and her crew.

The vessel itself hadn’t been much to look at, but it wasn’t atypical of the pilots who risked uncertainty and even death to rescue us. Unrest wasn’t flimsy, exactly, but the walls were definitely thin. All she needed to be, though, was nimble, fast, and–most importantly–cold. And she was all three of those things in spades. We fled Titan’s Daughter in a hail of toxic missiles and blaster fire, but no shot could find us. After we’d safely jumped out, I heard Unrest’s CMDR Jack Remiet mutter over the comms, his voice so calm it made me more anxious rather than less–”Well, that was something, wasn’t it?”
