002 - The Only Good Imperial...

22 Nov 2024S_OLDIER_X
I truly loathe the Empire - from their slavery practices to the unsettling level of devotion they show in the literal worship of their blue-haired princess - I hate everything about the Imperial culture, lifestyle and aesthetic.

Well... almost everything. The Imperial Cutter is probably the only positive thing the Empire has contributed to mankind in all the years that have passed since its inception in 2296. I'll never understand why the Federation leaders who were in place at the time chose to recognize Achenar's sovereignty and autonomy, rather than launch coordinated orbital strikes to reduce their capitol to ash... it's what I would have done, and is exactly what the Federal Navy S.O.P. call for when dealing with organized rebels and insurrectionists, which is where the old saying "joke" comes from: "Nuke it from orbit - it's the only way to be sure.".

But that was a little over a thousand years ago. Maybe things were just done differently then, but there's no question how an insurrection like that would be addressed today: with an organized and coordinated and indiscriminately-aggressive bombardment from low orbit until all signs of resistance on the surface have been neutralized (i.e., until the planet's surface is scorched).

Alas, for whatever reason, the leaders at the time elected to enter into a peace treaty with the traitors instead; and it's because of that decision that I'm currently writing this log entry: (a) from Ngalinn, well within Empire space, where I am (b) working as a contract courier for several Imperial corporations and private organizations in the system, and (c) on behalf of the Imperial frickin' Navy as well.

I'm a card-carrying member of the Federal Liberal Party and a Rear Admiral within the Federal Navy Reserve. Everything about this assignment makes me want to crawl out of my own skin. Everything about being in Empire space makes my stomach hurt. I never enjoy being in enemy space.

Imperial ship vendors are traditionally extremely suspicious paranoid about non-Imperials patronizing their businesses - most of them require earning their trust by helping out around the system, by demonstrating that you have a kind, non-hostile disposition towards the Empire and her Emperor. How does one demonstrate having a non-hostile disposition when your disposition is exclusively a hostile one, you may ask?

By working as a courier, delivering small packages between the major corporations and political organizations, all of whom with allegiances to the Empire, who have the most influence in the system. I've been here for a couple of days now, working virtually nonstop between Ngalinn and a neighboring system, I have a particular Cutter picked out and I've almost got purchase terms negotiated with the dealer; all I need now is to finish maybe another dozen runs and I should be all set to get my ship and back to Federation space.

Not a moment too soon.
