Cobra Mk V Test - The Abandoned Formidine Rift Settlements
12 Dec 2024Travers
I'm out at the Heart and Soul nebulae right now having some meetings with the administrators here. I'm looking to set up a mine or two out deep in the black, and this place, 8,000ly from the bubble seemed like a good place to get advice. Soul Nebula Mining Partners have got about forty mines and agricultural settlements out here, so they seemed like good people to get advice from. We met for a meal last night ahead of some tours and meetings they've arranged, and they were very helpful. To be honest I think most of them are just grateful for somebody new to talk to, and some different conversation.Anyway I've got some free time while I'm here and was asking what there is to see and do. Several of them told me about the four abandoned Formidine Rift settlements near by, about 800ly away. These bases were all part of a colonisation project about 40 years ago, but it all went horribly wrong and apparently these brave people were all killed in a Thargoid attack. There's all sorts of stories about the place, some people even claim their ships were sabotaged and they were left, deliberately, for the Thargoids to find.
Anyway I'd just taken delivery of my new Cobra Mk V so I thought it was a good opportunity to go check them out. I have to say though I didn't hang around long. God those places creeped me out, really eerie. I don't know what it is, maybe it's just my imagination but I could swear something was still there, watching me from the shadows.
As for the Mk V, well I'm happy to say that's better news. Damn this is a great ship! It's supremely fast, highly maneuverable, has a jump range of almost 60ly even when it's A-rated, it's supremely fast and super controllable in SCO, runs amazingly cool even when scooping from the hottest stars, and best of all, finally is a Cobra with some decent ground clearance so you can get your SRV in and out. It's a huge power hog though, so I'm glad I brought a Guardian Power Plant on the carrier, as a standard Class 4 just doesn't cut it. In fairness I had the same issue with the Mk IV so was kind of expecting it. I might engineer an overpowered class 4 when I get back to the bubble, or I might just steal the one from my Mk IV.
I got mine delivered in midnight black, it's a damn fine ship. Not as pretty as my Mk IV but as imposing as a Corvette. I'm not gonna regret buying this ship, no way. Now I'm heading back to my carrier, Olympus, via the Children of Raxxla Staging Post. It's half way between the two nebulas and some of the guys last night said it was another local tourist destination, not actually interesting per se, but about all they have this far out.
