The IEA is a community organized effort to promote and foster exploration through discussion and expeditions. All commanders interested in exploration are welcome. The IEA is a broad initiative that includes both independent explorers and all squadrons. IEA's discord server is designed to provide planning and communication support for expeditions, to archive completed expeditions, and to educate and collate third party resources to assist commanders in their exploration of the Elite galaxy.

The IEA is currently scouting for its next expedition, the Far Leys, coming Summer 3310. This expedition will travel to four mysterious, far-flung regions in the galactic northeast, the Veils, Trojan Belt, Sagittarius-Carina Arm, and Mare Somnia, which have only been lightly explored, and offer boundless opportunities to make new discoveries.

In 3308, the IEA's expedition, At the Eldritch Gate, sought to rediscover the first glowing green gas giant ever found, which had been lost for seven years.
