Jorge de Menezes
Jorge de Menezes (ca. 1498 - ?) was a Portuguese explorer who in 1526-27 landed on the northern coasts of the Bird's Head Peninsula and possible on the islands of Biak (Cenderawasih Bay), and Waigeo Island (now part of Indonesia), whilst he awaited the passing of the monsoon season. He named the region Ilhas dos Papuas and is thus credited with the European discovery of Papua. He was the Portuguese Governor of Ternate which was first visited by the Portuguese in 1512.
