They do take a credit cut from everything you do. That said if you get an SLF pilot at "Harmless" and rank them all the way up to "Elite" they only take a 10% cut from all your profits. If you got them at "Expert" and rank them up to "Elite" they take 16%. In my opinion it's worth it to give up 10% in exchange for having an Elite SLF pilot for when you need one.

As for their rank progression, it doesn't matter what your rank is or their rank. They rank up significantly faster. On my alt accounts, I got SLF pilots immediately. In the time it took me to go from "Harmless" to "Competent," the SLF pilots went from "Harmless" to "Elite."

That implies that:
A. Crew rank requirements are significantly lower than CMDRs' requirement.
B. The majority of points earned goes to crew pilot.
C. Both A and B

All 3 are highly unlikely and are the opposite of my observation. Once the NPC and CMDRs ranks are equal the progress is equal and before that the lower rank progress faster.

Do you have some proofs of that claim?

Edit: I've checked my NPC pilot - she is at 10% while I am at 25% progress to Elite I. We both were Elite on ED: O launch so we had equal start. My greater speed can be explained with a bug. Killing scavengers or NPC on foot progress your combat rank. It is daft but I saw other CMDRs in the official forums have such observation too.

Is there a way to see our SLF pilots ranks on Inara? I'm not finding mine on here.

No, but you can see their current progress in game.

Yeah, not home at the moment. I can upload screen shots when I get home later.

The answer is A. Crew rank up faster kill for kill than the player does, however, they do not accrue combat experience when they aren't flying like they do credits. My 'proof' is that the pilot I hired Harmless when I was Dangerous reached Elite before I did. Unfortunately the logbook doesn't record this so you can take me at my word or not.

Light-HawkWhile I have not been able to validate it myself yet, I have heard from multiple sources that threat level 7 pirates have a chance to spawn NPC's who have access to weapons and engineering that players cannot get. Supposedly some can spawn in with turreted plasma accelerators that still have the damage output of the fixed versions. Have you or anyone else here encountered such a thing?

I did see a ship firing blue phasing sequence beam lasers at me yesterday, but I don't remember if it was the Anaconda from that threat 7 zone. I left San Tu when I realized I couldn't make money there without a KWS. I found another pirate activity zone in Ross 467, but that one was threat level 6.

Those pirate zones are fun, but I'm not sure if they are better for rank farming than a hazRES. It's nice that all the ships there are deadly at least, but it takes longer to kill them, the bounties are the same, and they cause hull damage that costs money to repair.

Yep. Sounds on par with some of the stuff I have been hearing, since phasing sequence isn't available on beam lasers to players. Some of the crazier claims I have heard were that if you get yourself wanted enough to get the top level NPC cops coming after you, some of them have lasers that are basically programmed to have the damage output of station defense lasers. Again, I have not been able to verify these claims.

KurakilBefore engineering I never used KWS. For me it was much more time efficient to spend that extra 10 seconds killing rather than scanning. You can scan in 2 seconds now with Fast Scan so that isn't as much of an issue as it used to be. If you never get below a certain threshold of shields then you may as well get some extra income with the KWS, otherwise I would keep the booster. Of course if you spend a lot of time bounty hunting in anarchy systems then there isn't much of a choice.

Yeah, I figured I'd rather keep the shield booster than enter a threat 7 zone in my underwear. There are plenty of civil unrest systems that aren't anarchies.

That is interesting. I do not remember taking my NPC pilot into combat since Odyssey, but she have 10%. I guess I will have to check more stuff when that CG is over.

I can also confirm that pilots rank up faster than CMDRs. I picked up a Harmless pilot when I was either Expert or had just reached Master. She dinged Deadly a couple of days ago, and I'm still at Master.

Wow, that last mercenary rank will take awhile.

She is bloody ranked higher than me now. Dahlia is cute but this game mechanic doesnt make sense. Oh well. Its still better than what i had in 1984.

My Courier just went through an intense 16 minutes dogfight against a deadly Anaconda in Shinrarta Dezhra's hazRES.

I'm going with option A. Crew most likely just rank up faster. That said I don't know how it works, I just know what I have experienced. These are what I have accomplished so far. Also correction on what I said before, most of my SLF pilots are at "Deadly" not "Elite."

Sooo... 28 more systems are about to leave the Federation. Another great day for the galaxy as the Federation gets yet another crushing defeat and loses another large chunk of both territory and influence
