Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Oh. Well. Maybe, we should check, if, it still is, in there. Actually, in, there."

I slowly began to move in that direction.

"Also, have to think, how to get rid, of this. Our ships, are... well. Not, here. Also, this, is the moment, where... someone, trying to get this stuff, would show up. I think."

Now that we had a better lead at this Helix madness, I was also a bit more alert. I wasn't too sure how to get it to one of our ships so that we could dump it right into the star, before anyone could have a chance at recovering it. But that assumed it was even still there - and, preferably, with containment intact - which I would find out soon. And if that crate didn't blow right up in my face when I poked my head over it.

“Stay sharp… remember the grenade under the corpse. Wouldn’t surprise me if there’s another nasty present waiting for us.”

I started following Kasumi, who from this odd angle and a bit of distance, looked like a ball trying to walk away on two legs.

“That’s a whole lot of Helix we’re talking about here, by the way.. No way I could fit that in my Clipper. Either we need a bigger ship, or we make several trips. Each time through the minefield... ”
16 Jul 2024, 6:25pm
"Then, what? We just, leave it, here? No."

That certainly wasn't an option, but I didn't really have a particularly good idea. Venting it into space, too risky that someone would eventually find and spread it, whether human or some other species that followed us. Explosives, could still leave trace amounts behind in the atmosphere here, anyway. And we probably wouldn't have enough to send this lot of boxes sky-high. There was a gas giant nearby, but it would still take a while for those cargo boxes to reach it.

Not coming to anything, I just pushed the matter of "What to do with this" off for now, and instead focused on the contents of the boxes themselves. Knowing Azimuth had likely placed some kind of safeguard on these, I pre-emptively activated my shield, as I carefully opened one of the crates up. Moment of truth...

So this was the stuff that was supposed to be so dangerous. The anti-Thargoid weapon that had become a death trap for humans due to its side effects. Packed in an innocently white, cylindrical package, it looked almost comically harmless in the cargo container Kasumi had opened. But we both knew better, and it didn’t take the biohazard labels on the lid of the pure white package to tell us that.

A single one of these containers was already a deadly threat, and in front of us, arranged in a semicircle like the seats in an ancient Greek theater, stood many more cargo containers, each filled with another of these deadly packages. The entire previously unseen area of the cargo bay was filled with them - the cargo of the ship that Azimuth had lost. There were hundreds. And yet, this was only a fraction of the amount Azimuth had produced. A shiver ran down my spine at the thought of this megalomaniacal potential for destruction.

“This is pure madness.” That was all I could think to say at the moment.

I was still stunned by the sheer scale of this now visually tangible representation of destruction when my gaze fell on two containers that stood out due to their arrangement, standing close together and being much smaller than the others. They were also secured by a complicated-looking locking mechanism. A series of warnings were emblazoned on them, indicating a risk of chemical burns. They were labeled “human weapon platform type 4” and “human weapon platform type 3.” A sort of shrine had been erected on them: a data pad resting against a poster, with an image showing two women next to it.

"So, what, do we do... with, all this?", I asked my companion, not exactly sure what to do with this mess.

"And, what, is, this... 'human weapon platform', thingy? It, does not, sound like... the, corrosive bombs, they would, use. But, clearly, nobody... has been, here, in some time."

Which didn't make me feel particularly comfortable. That terrorist nut would have had several years to work out some kind of revenge plan. And with all this mess, there was enough to cause serious damage to not just the Empire, but everywhere else. And the lunatics that subverted a once worthy political movement into a senselessly destructive vendetta that encompassed all humans, they wouldn't hesitate to drag even those not responsible for their plight into it. They wouldn't be lunatics, otherwise.

I gazed at the door. Part of me was just waiting for it to open up and for that idiot to come walking through in typical evil villain style. The other half, for a ship to arrive through one of the loading bays... or, at least, at one.
16 Jul 2024, 8:57pm
“Well, at least we found the stuff before it caused any more damage. And it just hit me how much of it there actually is. And how crucial it is to keep an eye on Azimuth… and other companies of their ilk.”

I paused for a moment, silently weighing our options.

“As far as I know, nothing’s happened with this Helix all this time. The NMLA is history, just like Darkwater. There are even Marlinist Colonies now. So, hopefully, this whole mess stays buried in the past, dead and gone.”

Well, so far, so good. Then there was the data pad. I didn't really know what to think of it.

“Do you think that’s Verda in the picture? And as for all our questions… maybe we should take a look at this data pad… at least if we’re sure it’s not a trap.”
16 Jul 2024, 10:02pm
"Could, be. Dunno." I shrugged.

"I, expect, that pad, will not be a trap. Looks, a little... too, obvious, for it."

Nevermind that its placement suggested one of importance to... something. What, exactly, I wasn't sure, but it didn't quite strike me as any sort of trap. Especially with those corrosive danger markings making me think that one of those containers, if not both, contained one of those Thargoid-derived bombs that had been used about three years ago. Maybe even multiple. They wouldn't have wanted to set those off accidentally, just because someone accidentally knocked the pad off or something.

On top of that, this was providing me with the impression that something had happened here, to not allow all this to be used in the enacting of whatever crazed revenge plan that terrorist - whose name I had already forgotten - might have had. Maybe one of the group suddenly found their conscience and didn't allow a complete idiot to go through with the slaughter of hundreds of thousands, if not millions, of civilians, for no good reason. So I picked up the pad, and hit its power switch... if it still had any power left.
16 Jul 2024, 10:36pm
I leaned over Kasumi's shoulder, my breath catching as the data pad powered up with a series of strange, flickering effects. The screen glowed with an eerie light, casting shadows that danced across her face. I couldn’t help but feel a shiver of excitement.

As the device finally stabilized, two logs appeared on the screen. She tapped the first and older one, which seemed to come from a secret Imperial prison, and I read along with her.

Theta Group are proving to be harder to crack than I expected. Most of them haven’t said a word so far. Screams don’t count as words, obviously.

The man we think is their leader, Theta Seven, is supposedly something of an engineering genius, despite being covered in corrosive scars. During questioning, he just closes his eyes and lets it happen. Something tells me he might have gone through this before.

A few of the others are more vocal, but not with anything useful. Theta Twelve just spits abuse, whereas Theta Two is always shouting some nonsense about ‘remembering the nine martyrs’. She’s using a technique I’ve seen from other extremists, where they self-reinforce by reminding themselves of their cause. But they don’t usually hold out for this long.

We’ve been told that these terrorists need to look healthy and intact for a public execution, which limits our usual methods. Therefore, I’m taking an alternative approach. I’ve requested a neurosensory amplifier to be loaded onto the next supply shuttle. It’s a delicate piece of medical equipment, so I told them to mark it as fragile.

Next followed the second, more interesting one. A personal message from Cassia herself.

The battle of Summerland is lost. Colonel Ronan Brock has been killed, Darkwater no longer exists. John died in December last year already, like a hero. He blew up the Sacrosanct - he never wanted to go back to prison. The NMLA's cause is lost, at least for now. The few who survived go underground.

I took 50 tonnes from the Helix to prepare an attack on an important site of ABEL that will cause a great uproar among all superpowers and independent pilots. This act is in memory of John Tyburn, who once said, “The future will remember us.” His death was a devastating blow, but his words remain my guiding star - they are not just a promise, they are a call to arms, a declaration of an idea that refuses to be buried.

I have set everything to go off on the anniversary of my dead sister, October 1, 3310. This is for you, Zara. The future will indeed remember.

One must stand for what they believe in. Those who do so from the cockpit of a ship, I salute you. Know that should we fall on opposite sides of the conflict, you have my respect, honored foe. More so than any coward or politician who refuses to fight, regardless of political alignment, I see something worthy of my respect in all who fight, from the most dependable wingman to the bitterest rival.

And to you, who made it this far, congratulations. Maybe I even hoped that someone would read this at some point. The simple truth remains: human beings themselves remain the most dangerous weapon. If it didn't already happen by now, lean back and enjoy the show.

I look forward to meeting you in the black.

"Too bad, no one will, remember. Certainly, not, this." I mostly remarked this to myself, but gestured at this 'little' stash with my left arm. "Because, we, found it. But... how to, get rid, of it?"

I looked at the other two crates where this was placed. Maybe they had some kind of answer. Just needed to figure out how to get them open. I gave my companion an inquiring look.

"What, do you, think? About, getting into, those boxes.", I said, pointing at the two crates on which that poster and picture sat.
16 Jul 2024, 11:14pm
“Well, we found the stuff, but it’s quite possible that we’re missing a good 50 tonnes… with this amount, we haven’t exactly counted it all yet. What’s clear is that most of it is definitely here.”

I shot Kasumi a bewildered look.

“You seriously want to open those two containers? Have you even glanced at all the warnings and the advanced locking mechanism? I’m guessing those contain enzyme bombs or at least some version of them. Why in the galaxy would you want to do that?”
16 Jul 2024, 11:23pm
"Do you, have, a better idea? And, we can, handle it... carefully."

I then raised the datapad.

"But, I just, thought... two boxes. Two people. Maybe, this, can help us, open them. But... how? Maybe, it, has to do, with something. Here. The picture, maybe?"

That was my best guess, anyway. There seemed to be a certain similarity between the two people depicted on it, and there was the mention of a dead sister in that log.
16 Jul 2024, 11:32pm
"I have no better idea really. Was just wondering why you would want to do that."

I scanned the boxes extremely thoroughly, but could not find any indication of an ignition mechanism. Two boxes, two sisters... seemed plausible to me. Also though the sisters looked similar, they weren't the same. If one was dead and the other wasn't, which maybe accounted for the different type 3 and 4 mentioned on those boxes.

"Mhm. Maybe we give it a try. Though I am not fully convinced yet this is not another trap. But my scan did not come up with anything weird. Just that human weapon platform thing still gives me the creeps."

"Don't, know. Just, a thought. Maybe, 'human weapon platform' means, 'to be used, by humans'."

I glanced at the boxes again.

"But... how, to open this`? I, have no, idea. But, if this is, a weapon... we, may have, the thing we want, to blow all this, up. Here... you, look, again."

I held the datapad out for her, because I was a bit at a loss what to do now, even if I had - inadvertently, without really figuring it out or realizing - guessed correctly about something at play, here.
16 Jul 2024, 11:55pm
I reached for the data pad Kasumi handed me.

“Goddamn it. This whole mess is really getting on my nerves. I’m starting to wish for an old-fashioned terrorist to just barge in with a gun… you shoot 'em down and that’s that,” I grumbled to myself.

“Congratulations. Bah, just reading that makes me sick. The other text isn’t any better. That lady’s really something else.”

I was about to toss the data pad aside when something caught my eye.

“Wait a minute. In that last section, the one directly addressing the reader, the text is formatted differently in two spots. Those are the only places in the whole text where it’s like that.”

I read through the text again, this time with laser focus.

“This part here: ‘human beings themselves remain the most dangerous weapon,’ does that ring any bells for you? Kinda reminds me of how you always say humanity isn’t mature enough. And how they act completely idiotic towards the Thargoids. Maybe, the existence of humans is a threat, or something?”
17 Jul 2024, 12:06am
"I don't know.", I answered, truthfully. "But, maybe, it has, to do with... 'human weapon platform'. Which, apparently, is... in, the box. And, I, do not, think, it is a cat, to throw at, your enemy."

That was sort of just a joke, but I did get a feeling there was some sort of weapon for humans to use in those boxes. Rather than, maybe, some twisted experiment worthy of Azimuth.

"Maybe... we, should, try, to, get it open. If, you have, a good idea for, how."

My own was to - carefully - nudge and pick up the poster, see if there was anything behind it. If not, and it didn't blow up in our faces because it was tied to some kind of trigger or cable... that being the reason I was careful with it... I'd try the picture instead. Which I couldn't help but throw a remark at.

"I've seen prettier."
