Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I chuckled about that comment from my partner and slipped through the half-open armored airlock. If my boots made any noise at all on the cold, metal floor, it was drowned out by the opening door. The cargo bay was a cavernous space, and due to its sheer size, every creak and groan of the door or structure echoed through the bay, but I paid them no mind.

In front of me was a vast landscape of containers in various stages of use. Some were stacked neatly in towering groups, their surfaces marked with the wear and tear of countless journeys. These clusters formed makeshift walls and corridors, creating a labyrinthine feel to the space.

Scattered around these organized piles were containers that seemed to have been abandoned in haste. Some of them were still sealed, others broken open, their contents long since pilfered or decayed. The metal of these containers was often dented. As far as I could see, the docking bays itself were empty, with no ship in sight - but I could not oversee the whole area from my position.

I moved cautiously to an organized pile near the airlock, my senses on high alert, covered in its protection and secured the entry area for my companion to come in and join me.
15 Jul 2024, 4:07pm
The door suddenly ground to a halt with the sound of tortured metal, just short of opening fully.

"Hmph. Maybe, not so, intact."

That was to be expected. It had been a few years without any maintenance to it, and who knew just how far the damage was spread, or where it was. Either way, I had more than enough space to waltz on through, so I wandered over to where my companion was, still keeping an eye out, and stopped behind that same pile of crates. Luckily, it offered enough space for both even with my increased width. Or radius, if another part were to be considered.

"So, anything?", I asked, in case she'd seen something I had not.
15 Jul 2024, 9:51pm
The sensors in my suit picked up energy fluctuations to our left, in the part of the cargo bay where we didn't have a clear line of sight. Something in or behind that stacked labyrinth of crates was drawing power, though not a lot. I felt a twinge of unease, wondering what could be lurking there.

“I’m picking up some energy fluctuations to our left, in the part of the cargo bay that's hidden from our view. Something’s drawing power over there, though not a whole lot.”

I checked the readings again, just to be sure.

“To our right, I don't detect anything special, but that’s where most of the containers are, including quite a bunch that aren't neatly lined up and have been opened. So, what’s the plan?”
16 Jul 2024, 12:06am
"Hm."

I glanced over there. Couldn't see a whole lot either.

"Maybe, let me, go first. Make sure, it is safe. Or, try, a decoy, first. Throw, something. Could, be rigged. A trap."

Anybody who was luring us around in here would probably not be the kind of person to hesitate to shoot even if it was at someone with a body that would make most people blink to look twice. Nevermind that, if it was some kind of explosive trap or otherwise, I didn't necessarily want to be next to it when it went off... but my own chances of surviving it were probably higher. And if it was a bomb on a timer, maybe we did want to be near the thing to try disarming it. Yet, then, if it instead was a mine with a proximity or heat sensor... would be equally problematic. That bunch of containers did look rather inviting... suspiciously so, compared to the ruse with the dead body of whoever-it-once-was.

I looked around, but didn't see anything particularly useful. Then occurred to me that we were still in a loading bay - there had to be some mechanized equipment to move stuff around in here.

"Hm. Maybe, cargo arm? See, if, anything happens, when it is moved. Or, one of those, containers. Do, not, really... want, to go near, them."

We'd just have to find the controls for it. And hope those weren't rigged to explode or trigger something similar.
16 Jul 2024, 9:11am
I nodded, scanning the area for any sign of a control panel. There had to be more than one for each of the six docking bays had its own cargo arm. Eventually, I found a small console mounted on a free-standing column not far away, partially obscured by a stack of crates.

“Over there,” I said, pointing towards the object. “Let’s check it out.”

I moved cautiously, every step deliberate and measured. The silence was almost oppressive, now that the armored door didn't move anymore, and the cargo bay felt like a graveyard. As I reached the console, I examined it closely. It seemed intact at first glance, but then I noticed some wires hanging loosely and a few panels slightly ajar. My heart sank as I realized it might have been rigged.

“Looks like someone’s set a trap,” I muttered, carefully inspecting the exposed wires. “We need to be extremely careful.”

Taking a deep breath, I carefully scanned each of the wires. After a few tense moments, I noticed something odd. The wires weren’t connected to any explosive device; instead, they seemed to be part of a makeshift repair job.

“Wait a minute,” I said, frowning. “This isn’t a trap. Someone’s tried to fix this console with whatever they had on hand.”
16 Jul 2024, 1:30pm
"Hm. Maybe, our terrorist, 'friend'." With the word friend going about as far as 'I'm going to put a bullet through that idiot's face the moment I see her'. "Don't, see, who else, it would have been."

I had another look around. None of this looked like it had been touched in years, but that didn't have to mean much - if that remnant of NMLA activists had been in here, it would've been about three years ago. More or less. And if those opened storage units did once contain Helix, either there'd been a second layer of containment on the inside that remained intact - because I hadn't received any warnings about oddities in the atmosphere from my suit - or they were for something different once, power sources for the testing of the robotic limbs maybe, slowly depleting over time.

It then occurred to me, maybe those terrorist nutjobs had never been able to get here, for some reason, and if they were still monitoring the facility, we'd have been leading them to the thing they wanted all along. I decided to inform my companion of this possibility.

"Do, you think, we could have, been leading, them, here, all along?" I glanced in the direction of the bulkhead door, still wide open. "I, will watch, the door. In case. Will talk, on comms. You... keep, working. Maybe, there are, activity logs. Tell, if you need."

I gestured at the pouch holding my hacking tool... then thought otherwise and just took it off, handing it to her, to be returned later. I had reasons to think she wouldn't just run off with it, and if she did, I'd find her. Which I was reasonably certain that woman knew as well. So, I moved my big curves over to a spot where I could keep an eye on both the door and where she was working, such that we could see each other, in case of need. Or just to know where the other person was at any time.
16 Jul 2024, 2:12pm
“Shit. You really think terrorists made it into the station, but not into the cargo bay, and are still monitoring this after all this time?”

I couldn’t see why the terrorists wouldn’t have managed to break in here. Someone who took it upon themselves to kill an Imperial agent wouldn’t run from two guard droids. But maybe the armored airlock door was the real problem. If there was any truth to that suspicion and the facility was being monitored remotely, we were in deep trouble.

“Maybe it would be wise to close the armored door again, if at all possible. Anyone who wants to get through there would need either the code or a very good hack; otherwise, no one’s getting through. It's more likely to punch a hole in the outer wall of another section than to break in here with brute force.”

It made perfect sense that a cargo bay would be more robustly secured than some other sections. After all, it wasn’t out of the question that an unfortunate accident could happen with a spaceship - which, if possible, should not jeopardize the entire station.

“And thanks for the tools!” I grabbed the pouch.

“Alright, now let’s see what I can do,” I muttered, flipping a few switches and pressing buttons.

The nearest cargo arm whirred to life, its mechanical joints creaking as it began to move.
16 Jul 2024, 2:28pm
Things still looked clear for now, and with the cargo arm doing its thing - hopefully, without jamming up or falling apart, because I neither had lubricant oil nor a welder with me - I decided to follow through with that suggestion of trying to close up the big door. Maybe there was a master control station somewhere, if the panel near it didn't work. But, I wasn't so unlucky - whatever had stopped the thing from opening fully didn't appear to prevent it from closing back up... at a much slower pace than I would've wanted.

With that underway, I returned to my observation spot, keeping an eye on both that door and the cargo arm. With a little thought spared to how I had to look to somebody else, stood up straight, with those legs placed closer together, and the wild offset of size between the calves and the thighs... as well as that between the waist and the hips. I really was just such a weird thing.
16 Jul 2024, 2:42pm
“Looks like I might actually be able to do something with this console. At least that cargo arm seems intact enough. With that, we should be able to get to the cargo containers where the energy fluctuations are coming from.”

It seemed the old makeshift repair had been effective. I wondered if someone had once fixed this console to load something.

“Do you think this arm played a role in loading the Helix? I really hope that stuff is still here. Shouldn’t there be some kind of computer system around here to support all the administrative processes?”

It was quite possible that this only played a role until the attack on the station – I certainly didn’t expect to find any freight documents or loading lists with Helix entries. However, there should be some way to control the landing bays to allow ships to dock and undock - and at least this system must have been used. I shared this thought with my companion.

While I waited for her thoughts on the matter, and in anticipation that we might still coordinate the next steps somehow, I glanced at the containers immediately nearby, which had previously mostly obscured the view of this control system.

"Hm. May be. You, could check, while the cargo... thingy, works."

It seemed likely that, if any ships had come into this loading bay in the last six or so years, it would have been documented by the systems of the facility. That was something we could have had access to from the command center as well - probably - but I didn't feel like wandering over there. And the thing we were really after, it would be in here... if it was even still there. I wanted to keep watch until that door closed, though, just in case. Then, another thought occurred to me.

"Hm. What, if, maybe... the person, who tried to escape, with those pods, outside, did this? After, the riots, quickly fixed, that, and tried to, get away. Or, maybe, during. Not, sure."

Not really sure at all. There were a number of holes in that theory, like why the ship had been shot down outside, which couldn't be covered unless there was some kind of registry information telling us about that ship on the facility's computers... or without investigating the ship directly. And that opportunity, we would've had to take it on the way in.
16 Jul 2024, 3:35pm
“Mhm. Could be someone tried to make a run for it with the cargo ship. But my ship’s scanners showed that those pods around it where nothing but escape pods with already drained power supplies – probably similar to the one we found in the minefield. If that’s how it went down, I’d chalk it up to random cargo – fleeing personnel could’ve just boarded the ship directly, right? And why would there be a bunch of escape pods just lying around for loading?”

The inspection of the containers nearby didn’t reveal any big surprises. Metals, components, power generators – just what you need to operate and maintain a large station.

“I think I might be able to hack into the management systems from here with your tool, but since the whole console is held together by wild wiring and a lot of good will, I’d rather risk it after I’ve operated the cargo arm, okay?”

I had the not entirely unjustified fear that such an attempt could end in a system crash or even a short circuit, which I’d rather risk afterward.

I manoeuvred the loading arm to the containers surrounding the suspicious area where I had previously detected the energy fluctuation. Occasionally the arm would jerk a little as it moved into position, and each time I held my breath, fearing it would fall apart and stop working.
16 Jul 2024, 3:40pm
"Ok. Sure. Will just... wait here."

There wasn't a lot for me to do at the moment other than play a curious sight, and look at whatever was going on around here. The airlock doors sealed shut with a sound of the locks engaging, leaving only the cargo arm for me to observe.

"Say, does that, thing, not, have cameras, on it? Could, maybe, see, what is in, those empty, containers. If, it does."
16 Jul 2024, 4:12pm
“The camera’s busted, but the cargo arm’s sensors can still read the contents of the nearby containers. The data popped up on the screen in front of me. Right now, I’m passing by mostly medical stuff… basic and advanced medicines, precursor cells. Oh, and performance enhancers. This trip might just pay off after all,” I quipped with a smirk.

I maneuvered the arm further towards the center of the suspicious stacks, some piled three or four high.

“Okay, now it’s getting weird. Protective gear, personal weapons... explosives… looks like a damn mini armory… bloody hell, the sensors are glitching more and more… b#tt=e we#P0ns… hum#n we#P0n P=#tf0rm/4? Must be some technical error…”
16 Jul 2024, 4:52pm
"Try, a reset.", I suggested. "That, may help."

The oldest solution in the tech book - just turning it off and then on again. And, unlike giving it a kick, that actually worked. I paused, thinking on some of that information.

"But, human... weapon, platform? What, were they doing, here? Is that reading, even, correct?"

If so, it certainly had me puzzled. And concerned. Also no sign of that Helix stuff in there, apparently.
16 Jul 2024, 5:06pm
“I'm just reading what it says, I don't know if it's right. But kicking it would probably not be the best idea. With that adventurous wiring, I’d send the console straight to oblivion. Time for a reboot…”

The cargo arm jerked to a halt with an infernal squeal as the system reset. After a while, it hesitantly started moving again.

“Mhm. Hum#n we#P0n P=#tf0rm/4… didn’t do much… hum#n we#P0n P=#tf0rm/3… he#iX… he#iX… heliX… helix…”

I thrust my fist triumphantly into the air.

“Bingo! I think we’ve nailed it!”
