Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

'A... Ven... Tus. It's really not that hard... now what was it you wanted....... oh shit.'

'You sick son of a bitch. Cloning was always on his mind. But this..... damn it. This is on a whole other level of creep. I can only imagine what he had her made for.'

'I'll bring her back to the ship you two get Silvia and get her to Lifeboat. These creaks and groans from this carrier are worrisome.'

'I'll have a few of the guys take some of the weapons back for you two. As a firearms engineer Diaz was a marvel. You can tear them apart if you want.'

Aventus grabs the clone from the chamber and wraps her in a blanket. He wasn't sure if she had been subjected to torment or torture but knew I would have to decide what to do with her.

'Aventus I'm staying with these two.'

Aventus turns to look at the heavy gunners James and nods.

'That's fair. You have earned your keep. Your contract with the Knights of Cold Harbour as well as Marcus' contract are hereby fulfilled.'

He turns and heads out of the room while a confused Melli tries to stop him from taking the look alike of me.

'Would you relax your mission isn't yet completed and this is not Venus. Well not entirely. Her mind is not the same and Venus but she looks the same. Wait why the hell am I trying to explain cloning to a fox?'

Aventus shakes his head and walks away pondering if Melli even actually understood him or not. Melli runs around the weapons racks and stops smelling one particular weapon and begins to claw at it. The SCAR style rifle bore a striking resemblance to Silvia's plasma accelerator. The rounds themselves even matched, tungsten cores meant to be pulled into the plasma chamber just before firing to give the plasma the extra spicy punch after the shields dropped. Melli's scratching finally pays off as the weapon drops out of the rack with and smacks the floor as it spins in zero-G. The name Sharpe delicately engraved into the upper receiver proved that this was indeed Silvia's weapon.
06 Sep 2023, 5:47am
I approached Melli after the animal quite obviously freed a weapon from Diaz’s rack on purpose, and fetched it out of the air.

“Wherever he got this from… well, no point in not using it. Might as well. And she probably wants to have it back.”

Checked if it was loaded, but apparently even someone as maniacal as Diaz didn’t keep every weapon on the rack loaded at all times. No matter - there was plenty of ammo around, and I had some spare space on my belt after using mines, a few spare reloads for each weapon, and grenades. Hopefully, I wouldn’t need much any further.

I aimed the weapon around to get a basic feel for its handling, far less unwieldy than my railgun, and held it. A few test shots at one of the - already dead - Diaz clones, then I was satisfied, looking at Meowers. And the matter of the clone was dealt with to where I didn’t have to care about it further.

“Well, now that that’s dealt with, shall we go for the bridge? I think we’ve kept Silvia waiting for long enough.”

Melli confirmed the thought by hopping on my shoulders, then I had another idea.

“Actually, I’ll check the terminal. Think I’ll want some of that data for myself too, just in case.”
06 Sep 2023, 8:47am
"Yep," I nodded to Kasumi, fitting the magazine back. "And I'm not that out of ammo now. And... Hmmm... I think it was right to keep that clone thing intact."

A sudden flood of contemplations on the matter of cloning, the ethical side of it, rushed over my mind. I stood silent for a few moments, still gazing at the rifle ammo indicator since it was the last thing I was looking at before the thoughts appeared.

"If that clone had been ever activated before... Maybe it's a good idea to... You know. Ask her. About what he did to her, and what she was needed for. Could shed more light on the whole 'Diaz's scheme' thing. Venus might need every straw to restore her good name."

"Maybe it should be done by someone else. Not Venus herself. This may be too much for her," I shrugged, adding an obvious comment.
06 Sep 2023, 1:16pm
“Don’t think it should be her either, but then who? Silvia? Might also not be a great idea either. And I… well, we both know how well I do people. I think. Anyway …”

I moved back out toward the terminal, and began to mark files for download, when a surge of pain shot through my head, causing me to lean on the desk and let out a pained sound, holding, well, my helmet.

“Ugh! Fuck. We need to get this done before one of these hits causes me to black out.”

Meowers’ chemical cocktail was currently still circulating, but I could feel its effectiveness either begin to wear off, or just not hold up against the strain I was under. Even if I couldn’t understand a lot of what the Thargoids near here were exchanging with each other, the noise was getting unbearably loud and impossible to ignore, to the point where it could be a liability in combat.

I triggered the download and continued to hold my head, hoping the pain would pass quickly.

“I… shit. Do you really think it’s a good idea for me to still come with you?”, I asked Meowers, my voice audibly strained.
06 Sep 2023, 2:52pm
"Oh, craps," that was my only possible reaction on Kasumi's another attack of pain. I've already ran out of any sophisticated meds, and antiseptics and bandages can't do any good with that. "I don't have anything more than a bandage. Crap. If everything's so bad, you may follow the wounded commandos back to the ship."

I looked around.

"We have more than enough people and firepower to stop a remaining few. Don't worry. You'd better... Concentrate on your thing, I guess. Fighting those goons... You've already done more than anyone could ask for."
06 Sep 2023, 3:12pm
I looked toward Meowers.

“But I can’t just …”

I groaned under the headache worsening, which caused me to look away again, and gestured at my utility belt with my left hand.

“Painkiller. One of my pouches. Please.”

I wanted to see this through to the end with the others, Thargoid voices be damned. If I at least didn’t have to suffer from the headaches, I could ignore their voices enough to make it to the bridge and guard the rear.

But my brain refused to accept the idea of returning to my ship now, and not be there when we finally reached what we were actually here for, even if it was most definitely not the rational, and logical, thing, to do.
06 Sep 2023, 6:15pm
Some might say that was an opportunity to rifle through someone's pockets absolutely legally. Nope, my young pickpocket friend, everything that woman held close to her at the moment... Was looking like ammo. Except one pen-shaped injector that was the only thing that seemed medical enough.

"Hm... This one?" I handed the injector to Kasumi.

"And, hey. If it's getting a bit hard, you can hold my hand. Or shoulder, just... Not the left one. We're weightless here anyway."
06 Sep 2023, 7:45pm
I simply grabbed the injector from Meowers without a word, and pushed it into my neck after moving the suit’s fabric aside. Then left it to float, for now. A few moments later, the pain was reduced to tolerable, merely annoying levels. I breathed out deeply.

“Okay… it’s… better.”

Meowers probably felt less than keen about letting me come along. Maybe she had a point, as I still had a lot of noise in my head, but likely also realized I was too stubborn to just give in. The download finished.

“Let’s just… go. I want to be gone from this place, and the Thargoids. But I’ll hang back unless you need me up front.”

I fished the empty pen out of the air and stashed it away, then grabbed the weapon that I presumed to be Silvia’s again, and looked out toward the door. Waiting for Meowers to step ahead. There was only one way to the bridge from here, anyway, and I wanted to remind Melli of the plan just before we entered it.
06 Sep 2023, 9:11pm
Reaching the bridge, or rather, the door leading into it was… almost, uneventful. Almost, only because the emergency lights cut out completely just before we got there, and didn’t immediately come back on. An eerie silence set in, as if the fighting outside the ship had also ceased.

“This thing is really falling apart.”, I murmured, and looked at the sealed door up ahead, flashlight active - as I still preferred a source if light, even with my modified vision - then down at Melli, to the left of my feet. “Alright. Time for you to shine.”

I went down to a knee to be closer to the animal.

“Remember, go in there and find Silvia. Kill the two guys next to her, while it’s dark. Find her by her smell. Then, we come in and shoot all those other idiots still around. And make sure she finds some cover when the shooting starts.”

I accessed the door controls remotely and force hacked its lock, expecting most systems, including alarms, to be offline. While good for us in the moment, I had my concerns about the other implication the loss of power had - that the reactor was on its way out.

“Everyone, lights off. Don’t want to ruin the surprise. And stay quiet.”

I opened the door slowly, to ensure its motion was not accompanied by noise, stopping it when it was just wide enough for Melli to slip on through. The animal quietly darted forward and disappeared in the darkness. I kept my voice low when I spoke up after that, to avoid alerting any raiders that were potentially nearby.

“When we hear the screams, I’ll open the door fully, and you all go in. I’ll keep the back covered. Kill anything that moves and isn’t Silvia or Melli.”

It looked like the lights were staying off for good. Both good and bad, if none of the raiders had night vision - they could see us as little as we could see them. Or they were idiots and ran around with their flashlights on at maximum brightness, in a near-lightless environment.

I felt less focused on that than my own situation, though. I was definitely not in any particular combat-capable situation at this point, struggling to focus with all the noise from the hive in my head. That would also make steady aiming difficult.

Worst of all, with the ship plunged into darkness, and most of the sounds we could hear being occasional impacts on the hull, or the strangely muffled sounds of the Thargoids outside, I began to feel a very unwelcome resemblance to the Dedicant. The only thing that was missing were the telltale sounds of Scythes being nearby. Instinctively, I moved closer to Meowers, and quietly spoke over the comms link between us two.

“Please stay near me. If I don’t manage to keep it together …”

I didn’t quite finish the sentence, already feeling that fear I felt when I was subjected to the experience of the Scythe’s break-in capabilities firsthand resurface, and shivers pass through my body. Pushing it back down took a lot of effort, more than I wanted to have to give when most of my mental capacity was allocated to, limitedly successful, efforts at keeping the noise from overwhelming me.
06 Sep 2023, 10:00pm
The quiet hollow pitch black was just as disturbing as the singular pulsing angry Thargoid sitting just outside the bridge. Watching, waiting, planning. The two goons Diaz had assigned to watch over me turned on their flashlights to keep an eye on me. That was all they needed to do for my little gore covered armored fluff ball to locate me.

Melli pounced on the one with his back turned and sunk her razor sharp teeth into the base of the mans skull the blood curdling scream they let out was just as quickly cut off as Melli tore out a portion of the mans spine and went back in to rip out a large chunk of the mans nervous system effective killing the man. His partner watches in horror and the demon like creature leaps off the mans back and disappears into the black abyss that is the bridge.

'Where the fuck did it go? Fuck this, I'm not being paid enough to fight off demons.'

The unarmored raider goes to take off only to meet Melli who was mid air claws stretched out in front of her and her teeth bared. Her armored claws tear into the mans chest rending flesh from bone as her mouth clamps onto his face tearing a chunk of it off exposing the inside of his mouth. The man goes to pull Melli off of him only for his arm to meet the inside of Mellis mouth. She bites down with enough force to crush the bone and cleave his arm off just above the wrist. Melli tears into the mans stomach and forces her entire body into the cavity clawing and shredding his internal organs. She tears through the opening again pulling the mans heart out with her holding it like a trophy in her mouth before biting down onto it with a sickening squelching sound. She lets out a triumphant chatter as her enemies flee straight into the group waiting at the door.

"Melli is best! You cannot beat me! Now where is mom?'

The familiar voice of Melli rings through my implant and brings tears to my eyes.

'Melli! One of them has a remote for the restraints please bring it to me.'

Excited chatter from Melli comes as a response.

'Melli already find clicky device. Melli bring to Silvia.'

The little fox creature grabs the floating remote and prances over to me nuzzling close smearing what I can only assume is gore and viscera from her fallen foes all over me.

'Oh my! You need a bath! Wait how did you get armor?'

'Venus save Melli. But then Melli find Venus in room with 2 of the big angry man. Not possible though Venus burned by corrosive. Aventus take Venus mommy away.

'Slow down Mellita. Venus is alive? Are you sure?'

'Melli remembers Venus scent. Smell like flowers.'

I close my eyes attempting to comprehend what Melli is explaining to me but I just can't wrap my head around the reality of it. I just want off this dieing carrier and away from those fucking murder flowers outside.
06 Sep 2023, 10:26pm
The screaming of raiders getting mauled alive was enough for me to get the door opened fully.

“Alright, go! Kill all of those bastards!”

A few shots lit the room up, doing nothing to discourage us from getting inside. I returned fire in that rough general direction, assuming nobody alive was still near Silvia, but that was more to discourage them from shooting than to kill.

Someone threw a sort of flare into the center of the bridge, lighting it up in red temporarily, allowing us to see whatever remained of the bridge crew. I took cover behind a console quickly and sent a few shots toward a raider, the combined plasma-tungsten projectiles killing him within the second, despite my less-than-stellar shooting.

That was as far as I dared to move up in my state, instead keeping an eye out for anyone making a run for a flanking position.

“Silvia! Keep your head down! We’ll clear out these bastards, and then we’re getting the fuck off this ship!”, I shouted into the room, hoping she’d hear me.
06 Sep 2023, 11:44pm
Kasumi Goto“Please stay near me. If I don’t manage to keep it together …”
"Sure," I replied quietly. "I doubt they're fighters anyway."

When the flare lit up the room and we entered, I noticed that my doubts were accurate: lightly armoured, wielding only pistols or small carbines, bridge crew members stood no chance against the angry band of commandos. A few of them fell to the massive gunfire in an instant, while running around in shock, desperately trying to find a spot to hide. I, personally, got one: poor idiot jumped towards one of the consoles to hide behind it, greatly overestimating his strength and speed. Ended up still finding a place behind the said console... Yet, not in one piece. To the surprise of another unlucky bastard already hiding there. Seeing what his former colleague had just turned into, he let out a high-pitched shriek and ran. Forward. Straight to the commandos' rifles.

"Hey! You might as well shoot yourselves and make this easier for everybody!" I shouted. Without expecting any result though.

"Fuck you!" was the reply from behind one of the overturned tables. Loud enough for me to figure out which one exactly.

"No, you!"

I took aim at the centre of the table and pressed the trigger, sending an eight round long burst. Cheap plastic table was almost evaporated, and a wave of burnt and ripped flesh and viscera, mixed with parts of personal armour, weapons and bloated self-confidence, took flight towards the wall behind it.
07 Sep 2023, 1:02am
The bridge was pretty much cleared at this point. I noticed movement somewhere at the edge of my vision, from a lightly armored figure, so not one of our commandos. The other part of my mind assigned to looking in that direction registered the figure being too large for Silvia, so the trigger was pulled. A bunch of shots came out, not aimed particularly well, but just enough of them hit to result in whoever that was getting staggered. A few bullets from another commando killed the straggler. Then, no more gun fire.

"Was that the last one?", I asked into the room, still dimly lit by the flare, openly.

"It sure looks like it.", came as the response. "Or those cowards have finally given up."

"Just keep an eye out. I don't want anyone getting shot now."

I stood up from behind my cover and walked over to where I saw Silvia getting cuddled by an even more bloodied fox. With a mixture of delight, and disgust at the state of the animal, on her face.

"And to think your fur was white when this started.", I remarked to Melli, then looked at Silvia. "What do you say to getting off this ship? Oh, and you might want this back."

I held up the plasma weapon in my right hand, presenting it. The Medusa floating in front of the carrier's bridge hadn't escaped my notice, and I was observing it from the corner of my vision. It had previously been 'staring' at the center point of the tower, but was now seemingly fixated on me, whether anyone else noticed or not. And its glow had changed from a slow, pulsating red, to the usual, neutral white presented by them when no threats were nearby, and they had no other reason to be pissed off. Either this one was tasked with observing, or Azimuth's idiots had finally stopped being, well, idiots, and run off instead of continuing a hopeless fight. I didn't know, but didn't much care either. As long as it stayed there and did nothing, it could watch. I was more concerned with Silvia, and getting myself away from the Thargoids.
07 Sep 2023, 1:28am
"Ah, hells," I slowly walked to Kasumi and Silvia. "I guess those questions like 'are you okay' can wait since you're obviously not. Let's get out of this damned place."

And then I realised that I wasn't a perfect picture either. With my armour suit being covered in a mixture of blood of each type, with, possibly, traces of drugs those raiders were taking. And maybe even some diseases they carried when they were alive. Including STDs.

"We really should decontaminate our stuff. This is a mess."
07 Sep 2023, 2:00am
"You're telling me. I'm not the one that took a shot... or a few... to the shoulder."

I threw a hinting glance at the damaged shoulder pad, then turned my gaze at the Medusa.

"Has that thing been staring into here all this time? It's a bit creepy."

I felt pain shoot through my head again. Not quite as strong as the one in Diaz's cabin, partly thanks to the painkiller, but still enough to make me hold a hand out to a nearby console, the other on my head, and give off a noise indicating discomfort.

"You're really gonna have to tell us what's wrong with you.", one of the commandos threw at me, in less than thoughtful manner.

I had to wait for the pain to wear off to reply. Or snap back, rather.

"You don't need to know."

I looked back at Silvia. We probably still had a good minute or two before everyone would decide on departing from the carrier, and I wanted to personally tell her that Diaz was dead. I was even expecting her to ask, though we'd have to go past his dead body, anyway.
