Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

A massive explosion from the front of the carrier lights up the bridge, a shadow being cast from the Medusa. The resulting vibration sends an eerie message about the state of things.

'Please get me the hell off this ship. I don't care where we go. Anywhere is better than this place.'

I state a very high level of desperation in my voice as I stand from my hiding space and run to Kira giving her a long thankful hug then turn to Ina and offer the same to her. As we depart the bridge another large explosion erupts, this time from the rear of the carrier below the bridge, near the bottom of the thrusters. An emergency warning is broadcast over the intercom, powered by its own auxiliary generator.

"WARNING! Core status critical! Evacuate Immediately! WARNING! Emergency escape pod protocol offline! WARNING! Reactor detonation imminent. All personnel, Evacuate Immediately!"

The warning system alerts everyone to the true state of the carrier. Though it was known it was doomed, it wasn't known how close the rescue attempt had come to being a complete failure.

'Looks like we need to go.'

I pulled myself out of Silvia's hug rather than wait for her to back off, not fond of close bodily contact unless I specifically asked for, or allowed it. Few people would ever get an implicit allowance for such actions, and while I liked Silvia, she was not part of that group.

I stepped in front of the Medusa, and it seemingly followed every footstep I took as I moved toward the front center of the bridge, looking up at the large Thargoid ship, my hands lowered, no weapon inside them. I looked at it for a long few seconds, and it ‘looked’ back at me. It also felt like all the remaining eyes in the room were on me... until a blast occurred somewhere roughly in the middle of the carrier. The Medusa turned around, giving off an angry red color with an according noise, and began to move toward the explosion, as if it responded to a threat.

A second, bigger blast followed in that same location, and made the entire ship tremble significantly, accompanied by a deep rumble. I saw a big piece of debris come flying toward the bridge - one that the Thargoid ship seemed to be keen on avoiding as well.

"Ah, shit!"

My first instinct was to turn around and run, quickly overridden by a thought to lower the shutters that could cover the bridge windows in an emergency. Then I followed the first thought and got some distance between myself and the windows. Just about felt like throwing a look when I heard a piercing shriek, as metal impacted on metal, followed by glass shattering. My back was showered with the shrapnel of the impact, but not enough hit to break the shield, or it was too small to have a chance of causing damage. I had thrown myself to the ground with some magnetic assistance, however.

"Alert. Breach detected. Damage control teams unavailable.", the carrier's automated system reported.

I stood back up and looked at the result. Shutters had come down just enough to stop the large piece of metal from smashing through the glass and risking to suck us out into space, if it hadn't killed everyone by entering the room. Still, I heard distinct whistling as the air began to escape through what gaps it could find in the impacted spot.

"Well, that was just a question of time.", I remarked. "Everyone, back to their ships! Now! We don't want to be here when this thing turns into a star!"

Another large explosion shook the ship as we moved off the bridge, followed by another announcement from automated systems, or whichever part of them remained intact. That prompted me to stop.

"Wait!" The shout seemed to have the intended effect of, well, making the group stop. I looked at Silvia. "You wouldn't happen to have a helmet, would you? There's a good chance we'll be passing through depressurized sections on the way back."

'No. I don't know where my armor even is. I woke up in a holding cell in this.'

I motion to my body only covered in a basic flight suit with the helmet attachment cut away. There was no way I would be able to get through one of those sections not without armor that is. James chimes in remembering what he had seen in Diaz's personal armory.

'What about that set of armor from Captain Duval? The two are roughly the same size so it should be fine.'

'What armor was it?'

'I'm not sure but I can take you to the room and you can see it for your self.'

'OK. Let's go. How far is it?'

'Not far.'

I look to Kira and wave as I run after the heavily armored gunner, Melli hopping up onto my shoulder. James and I enter into the stash room and he brings me over to where the clone of Venus was found. The set of armor she had worn the day she had attempted to rescue me sitting in a display case. I pull out the armor and put it on. Though a little big it will suffice. I put on the helmet and secure it into place. There is a slight hiss as the air tight seal activates.

"You may want some explanations," I spoke, to Silvia obviously, marching behind both women in front of me and the commandos behind, as we passed by a window that gave us a clear view of the Thargoids floating in space around the doomed carrier. "And believe me, I barely have any."

Luckily, our temporary situational friends weren't able to recognise my face under the helmet visor with so many blood splatters on it, or weren't able to do so at all. But, once they connect with their hive datacentre thing to get to know what that white FDL I'm flying actually is, the response... You can guess. One random sneeze could've sent that carrier to oblivion, not to mention stray shots from Thargoid Interceptor cannons, and I didn't want that to happen too early. At least I've had enough heatsinks to depart unnoticed, only hoping that the deck elevators and doors weren't out of order.

I looked after Silvia as she marched off with the heavy gunner, then turned to Meowers.

“Those explanations can wait until we’re not at risk of getting vaporized along with this ship.”

As if it was merely waiting for me to say that, another explosion rumbled through the carrier.

“Now come on. I think the two lovebirds will find their way back to us without us staying in the same spot.”

Something blowing out in the same room as us caused a wall panel to be knocked loose, and embed itself in the wall opposite.

“You know what, maybe they’ll just have to. You got any power left to use your shield, now’s the time!”

I triggered my own shield again, previously having disabled it after the impact of the debris piece on the bridge, and plugged an energy cell into the battery pack to keep it active. My last recharge, too. Then checked the carrier map for hazards.

One of the rooms in the emergency stairs showed a drop in pressure, but too slow to have been caused by a wall blowing out. Had to be the result of the shot that crippled Diaz, and finalized his demise. Otherwise, besides breached sections, nothing too bad. Relatively speaking, seeing as we were on a ship that was about to have its reactor go into meltdown.

“I think it might be time to move. I sure don’t want to be here when this bomb goes.”

I didn’t really care too much to see whether the others also began to follow as I moved. Silvia and the gunner couldn’t be far behind, and we all knew more or less where we had to go, too. Not that it made it any less of a stress-inducing environment, as explosions kept reminding everyone that this ship was, quite literally, tearing itself apart.

James, Melli, and I make it down to the hangar and I freeze up seeing the Anaconda. It's identifier gives me pause. The only group I knew with this identifier was Black Flight. As if in cue Aventus rushes out of the ship.

'Everyone on board now!'

Everyone except of course Ina and Kira board Lifeboat. I take a seat with the injured commandos and secure the safety restraints. There is a groaning sound as the hangar elevators lift the ships to the surface. The hagar ceiling grinds open as the Anaconda moves out of the carrier.
07 Sep 2023, 6:17pm
I observe the Anaconda get lifted up by the elevator, whatever motors were driving it seemingly beginning to struggle a little. I turned my attention to Meowers when it passed out of sight.

“Well, I suppose we should get to our ships, then. But mine’s …”

I began to point toward the direction of my ship’s hangar, which was still a fair ways from here, but was interrupted by another, louder explosion, and following announcement.

“Warning. Containment field failure imminent. Evacuate. Evacuate.”

“Right, no time for chatting. Let’s go!”

I didn’t know which direction Meowers’ ship was in for certain, so I just looked at her, knowing that the answer would only take a second to come out at best. Better to stick together if we could, or I’d already have run off to get to mine.
07 Sep 2023, 6:48pm
"Shit!"

I caught the handrail when another inner explosion shook the crippled carrier. Or, more like, a carrier-shaped doomed piece of floating debris full of mangled corpses. Suddenly, an idea flashed on my mind. A bit desperate, maybe.

"Stick to me. Marshmallow is literally two hangars away. Can you activate the deck elevators for your ship remotely?" I spoke quickly. "Thing is... I can get us close. Times faster than walking there on foot. Then you can grab the rope and lunge to your ship. What do you think?"
07 Sep 2023, 7:01pm
“Hang on. Let me try.”

I accessed my wrist computer and selected hangar controls for my ship. The doors at the top began to open, but the controls lit up red. They had stopped just short of an opening to fit the Corvette through.

“Damn it! I’ll have to go in there and try a manual override. But I’m not leaving that ship behind.”

I turned my attention to June and knocked on the AI core with my right hand.

“I’d suggest you get that ship you wanted out of here. This piece of rubble isn’t getting any more intact from here.”

The only real indicator I had of how much time there was left were the Thargoids, who I could feel were still busy swarming around the carrier. Once I felt the shift from the hive to abandon it, I’d know time was up soon.
07 Sep 2023, 7:08pm
"WAIT!"

June's voice breaks the conversation up.

'Get to Pit Viper. It's the next hangar over I can remote collect your ships without the needed risk of life. It is the least I can do for your assistance.'

There is a brief pause before she continues.

'Yes I can divert all remaining carrier power to the hangars. The elevators are broken on your corvette but the hangar ceiling is functional. Please trust me with this. The chances of survival if you try to perform manual override are zero.'

There is a level of concern in her voice as she speaks almost as if she truly cares about the outcome of these two strangers lives
07 Sep 2023, 7:19pm
“I think you’re getting incorrect telemetry from the systems, June. That’s not just the elevator that got stuck. The doors are too, and they’re not open wide enough to fit my ship. Either I get in there and force the system to open them, damage be damned, or I’m leaving it behind. And that’s not on the table.”

I was determined, and there wasn’t much bar a broken leg that could dissuade me from it. Reactor readouts were, expectedly, all in the red, but just far enough from the critical zone that I could make it… if I floated along the outside of the carrier.

“I guess I can take a ride, but I’ll need to be dropped off outside the hangar and go down.”

I hit my earpiece for a direct connection to my ship.

“EDI, get the ship’s thrusters running. Hasty departure, so don’t run them through the long cycle.”

“They already are, Kira. I am wary of the carrier’s current status”., EDI replied, oddly calm. I really needed to tweak her emotional subroutines some.

“Always one step ahead.”

I turned to Meowers.

“So do I go with her ship…”, I said, pointing at Meowers. “… or the one that I saw was on the other side of the carrier, last I checked?”

Another explosion, which caused the metal to shriek agonizingly.

“And don’t spend a few minutes arguing.”
07 Sep 2023, 7:29pm
'Please hand me off to the other commander. I do not wish to be subjected to needless self endangerment over a solitary ship.'

June is direct and seemingly annoyed at being stuck to someone who is willing to allow themselves to encounter extreme danger for no reason other than they want their ship.

'Please I do not want to be involved in a suicide mission to save your Corvette. Hand me off and I will ensure Pit Viper is removed from the carrier. I have its target location set to that of Antimatter back on Citi Gateway. Thank you for saving me but this is where we part ways. At least for now.'

"What's this... Ah, nevermind. Can you give me the status of one particular hangar? Fer-de-Lance, ident AX313M, named 'Marshmallow'", I spoke to the AI core having little to no idea what this thing is and what it's capable of. A general concept of giving an access to my ship to some kind of weird computer didn't feel exactly comfortable, however, perhaps this was the only option. But I hoped it wasn't.
07 Sep 2023, 7:37pm
Silvia Sharpe'Please hand me off to the other commander. I do not with to be subjected to needless self endangerment over a solitary ship.'

“Fine. Be a bitch. I thought you’d understand this when you wanted to save Jules’ ship, but apparently not.”

I detached the core from my belt, leaving it to float off for Meowers to grab, and cut off whatever link I had to the AI, so I wouldn’t hear it. If it was going to go at me like that for daring to have a similar attachment like it did to a ship, and valuable personal items I had onboard, I didn’t want it around anyway.

“Take that stupid thing. If it wants to bitch at me like that for refusing to leave my ship behind, someone else can deal with it.”

I turned away and disabled comms to anything but my own ship, for now, starting to head toward the closest hangar with open doors so that I could get to the exterior hull.
07 Sep 2023, 7:52pm
"Ah, hells", I commented on a situation quietly, catching an AI core and squeezing it into one of many empty magazine pockets on my belts.

"Hey! Stop! There's...", I shouted, but seeing no reaction from Kasumi, I realised that she had shut her comms off, so I ran towards her, and, catching up with her surprisingly quick pace, waved my hand, signalling.
