Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Well, then, time to go back."

Since there wasn't any more to say until we were somewhere safe, without Azimuth's prying eyes everywhere, I just went right back to my hangar, a watchful eye on the security, which made a lot more sense now in light of the planned arrival of the big Azimuth ship. But they let me go on without any interruption, and likewise exiting the station went just fine, because to them I would not look like much more than an ordinary ship, even if prompted for a scan. The transport traffic was very much still ongoing, however, so I did spend a bit of time in the queue watching Type 9s come and go, alongside some smaller vessels, and an Anaconda or two, before I jumped out to the carrier.

I would wait in the hangar there to see where my companion wanted to meet, to discuss the data. Or I would send it over while we remained ready in our respective ships, since we could just as well discuss it over comms.

Willow Thorn[Once you get us a lead, we'll decide what we should do next, okay?" asked Willow leaving for her room.

“I’ll wake up Ninette.” Vasil began shutting down the new COVAS Willow had installed for the trip in preparation for putting Ninette in place.

Every manufacturer had a particular method for proper removal of the COVAS from its interface. However, they all followed the same plug and play procedure with there being only minor differences when hot swapping. Since Vasil was doing a full shut down for a cold swap nothing other than the standard procedure was necessary.

Once Ninette was in place, Vasil powered on the COVAS. “Time to wake up, Ninette. We’re home.”
24 Aug 2024, 2:09am
After Vasil had finished powering on Ninette, Maul monitored the COVAS for another upload but nothing of the sort occurred. He grunted from behind the screen that he was using to watch the ships data flow. "Maybe the upload only occurs every so often?" Pondering on nothing would lead to nothing, another avenue needed to be explored. That road would start with what public information was available, looking through the extensive list of administrators, directors, professors, specialists, etc. and seeing if anyone or anything stood out. Failing that, he'd have to find a way to gain access to student records and start weeding through them for a lead.

Most positions at a place like this were cushy but there could only be a select few people that were capable of making something as complex as Ninette, with how custom he was. Then there was the dated hardware within, it would be best to assume that when the COVAS was built, it was done so with the top of the line hardware available at the time, which would narrow down the list further by using their age. Bypassing any names or positions that didn't seem important, his eyes landed "Séraphine Étienne", who teaches AI Science and Sentient Machine Theory.

Maul collapsed from his hunched over position and relaxed into the chair with a looking partially confusion and defeated. He knew the name, he knew what she did, half of the reason that he himself became interested in AI was because of her published works on the subject. What he didn't know though, was that she was here working at OVU. All of this may very well have nothing to do with her but it was the best lead he had in short notice. That and her last name was strikingly similar to "Ninette" almost an anagram even.

"Séraphine Étienne." Maul said, looking over to Vasil as he called up a large holoscreen in the cockpit to display her profile. "She's a fuckin' innovator in her field. AVA, the AI I've been working on for years is built on the backbone of this woman's discoveries and ideals. She's gotta be our best lead." He risked sounding like a fanboy but his appreciation for the breakthroughs she had made were true, nonetheless.

“I give it even odds that she speaks French.” The expertise and the name made the connection to Ninette too much of a coincidence to be completely random.

“If she is everything you say, that would explain why Ninette makes contact. I don’t think Etienne is keeping an eye on Goodness. I think she is collecting research data.”

Different scenarios flashed through his mind. A few were firmly in the realm of conspiracy but had just enough plausibility that people with tinfoil hats would form entire societies dedicated to exposing the theory as truth.

“Makes you wonder how many Ninettes there are out there collecting information,” he said. “And why they need to record how many times a week you shit and the consistency of said shit.”

Vasil shook his head to dislodge the run-away thoughts and get back on topic. “Anyway, we should contact the good Professor, or Doctor, or whatever her title is. I say we tell her straight up what we are doing and why we need her help.”

An alert tone she hadn't remembered setting played in her ear, but Séraphine was in the middle of a lecture. Still talking to the auditorium, she allowed herself a distraction to check her personal device. Without looking, Séraphine tapped the screen and sent the alert to her glasses. Yellow text scrolled next to the script she was reading from for her class, and what she read sent a jolt up her spine.

"Oh pourquoi?" escaped Séraphine, and she had to read it again to be sure of what the alert said.

A voice spoke in her ear implant, and the noise of almost a hundred people shuffling in their seats reminded Séraphine she was drawing a different sort of attention now.

"Doctor Étienne, is everything ok?" asked the visiting professor that had arranged this session.

"Oui, or yes yes, I lost my place momentanément" She only dropped back into French when she was emotional, and him showing up again, after so may years should not be having such an effect on her.

"Another area where an AI lecturer would have the advantage, no?" she announced to the auditorium to light laughter.

Still giving her talk, a script she almost knew by heart, Doctor Séraphine Étienne accessed security camaras at the dock where the Honour Promise had landed.

Vasil Vasilescu Vasil shook his head to dislodge the run-away thoughts and get back on topic. “Anyway, we should contact the good Professor, or Doctor, or whatever her title is. I say we tell her straight up what we are doing and why we need her help.”

"Oh, I missed a bunch huh?" asked Willow coming back from getting changed.

She'd embraced her look when she was a teenager. Pretty much the same, but showing a little more skin, and she'd added a lace and velvet scarf to complete the student-on-the-go impression.

"So, dose this place have like, a French section or what?"
24 Aug 2024, 8:16pm
“Mostly you missed Maul working the dark art of info harvesting to come up with this.” Vasil indicated the holo screen with the profile and image. “That is Dr. Seraphine Etienne, AI sorceress supreme. And, I think, Maul’s big brain crush. Like I was telling Maul, I think we should contact her and simply ask for help. Whether she developed Ninette for AI research, or has some connection to Cream-I mean Goodness-then odds are she’d be open to helping. Well, unless our good Lord Charles left her with a scarred heart. Then it might be a bit dicey.”

A chirp from the ship’s comm interrupted Vasil. Luxe Velocity had delivered the hopper he reserved for getting around the city. A sleek, candy apple red Sparrowhawk-V sat on the platform, gleaming like a ruby in the sunlight. The civilian version of the racing hopper was not exactly practical but it could fit four people and piloting one was never boring.
24 Aug 2024, 8:49pm
"Huh" grunted Willow looking at the image of Doctor Étienne "Like, more then just a brain crush I'd guess"

The picture looked like a publicity shot for a movie star. So, brains and beauty in one package. Some people had all the luck. Willow would lay money on her having a great personality too.

"Like, let me order my Python, and I'm good to go. I want Barb here coz like, she's got all my tools. This ship is great, but it's just a flying hotel right now, I like to have my work rig near by"
24 Aug 2024, 11:58pm
Maul had slipped out during Vasil and Willow's conversation and returned wearing something more fitting for the role he needed to fill. A crisp clean white long sleeved business shirt, black dress pants and shoes that reflected the light overhead. It was the standard among those who took their "data crunching" and "analytics" a little too serious. Besides, the shirt helped to cover most of his tattoos, besides the few on his hands an face that is. None of this was done in an attempt to make a good impression on Seraphine, AT ALL.

He reentered the bridge as he slung the straps of his backpack on on his shoulders, grinning at Vasil and Willow. "We all wear masks, ain't that right? Today I'm just a reformed criminal who has graciously been given a second chance at life thanks to the wonderful people over at ERS." Maul stepped further into the room, looking up at the image of Seraphine on the holo. "Now, what's hiding behind your mask, Doctor?"
25 Aug 2024, 12:28am
Vasil wondered if he was the only one not changing anything about his appearance. Willow’s minor change to an eager co-ed was not as radical or jarring as Maul’s from an inked-up BlackNet info samurai to a cube farm data processing geek.

He was about to start a message to the Doctor, but had to pause and tell Maul, “You look like the type of person to begin every sentence with a condescending, ‘Actually...’ “

"And you," he said to Willow, "Still want to go with the eager engineering prodigy angle?"
25 Aug 2024, 8:25am
"Like, not if I don't need to. Starting with a lie is a dick move that can be hard to get out of, you know?" said Willow looking at Maul.

She was going to let him know Goodness had lots and lots of very stylish clothes in his changing room, but if this Doctor had a history with Goodness, maybe Maul turning up in Creamy's clothes would be weird.

"Okay Romeo, We'll go find something to do if you and the doctor like, hit it off. We got your back dude"
25 Aug 2024, 4:56pm
“You can just be yourself, Willow. I think the direct approach might be better with the Doctor.”

Using the contact info in the Doctor’s bio, Vasil recorded and sent a voice message.

Doctor Etienne, my name is Vasil Vasilescu, VP of Operations for the Emerald Repatriation Society. I assume you are already aware of Ninette arriving on Mars so I will not waste any time.

ERS is trying to find Lord Charles Goodness and needs your help. He has been missing for over a year after getting mixed up with some unsavory characters and we believe the COVAS may hold clues to his whereabouts. Ninette was obtained from those same characters he was last seen with, but so far no one can get her to talk.

I am on Mars with two ERS contractors for engineering and information security. It is our understanding that you may be uniquely qualified to help us access the COVAS.

We can speak more in person, either at your offices or aboard the Honour Promise, or wherever you prefer.

“There,” he said after sending the message. “Let’s hope Lord Pompadour did not piss her off and she tells us to go pound sand.”

Direct, exactly the way Séraphine liked her information. If it was true or not, she couldn't tell. Creamy went missing most the time, and the people he went missing with were always unsavoury to someone, but she was concerned.

Creamy had been abducted a few times, that is a normal state of affairs for imperial nobility. Ninette had provided Sovereign Shield with the information they needed to track him down. If Creamy had been taken again, and the abductors knew to remove the tracker Sovereign Shield had implanted in him, then maybe her oldest AI needed to come to the rescue once more.

There was always the chance this was a ruse by someone chasing Creamy, so the Séraphine felt it prudent to verify both the real situation regarding Creamy, and the identity of the caller. Creamy's Farther, the Count should be of great assistance in those matters, as well as hew own AI that the Doctor had already set to the task.

However, that would have to wait for now. Séraphine was great at multi tasking, but she right in the middle of a lecture.
25 Aug 2024, 8:59pm
“So, while we wait for a reply, anyone up for a bite to eat or some site seeing? It would be a shame to not put that Sparrowhawk to use.” Vasil looked out of the cockpit to where the shimmering red hopper was parked. “Even though it is not the Hypervelocity Blue I requested, it will do. Red Shift is bit too flashy, I think.”

As if the high-powered hopper was not already a flashy, skimmer-like vehicle to begin with.
25 Aug 2024, 9:47pm
"How fast do you think that thing can go?" Though Maul had tried his best to cover up his true self, the mask slipped as he nearly began salivating at the sight of the red hopper outside. As the words left his mouth, he had thought of the bounty on his head and the purpose of the "mask" in the first place. "Know what? Never mind. I could actually do with a bite though." Despite being very much of Fed origin, this was his first visit to Sol. He suddenly felt like the tourist that he was. "Either of y'all ever been here before? Got any favorite chow joints?"
