Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

There were comments like, can you handle a vehicle of this size, and, how are you at flying in gravity, but that would be labouring the joke. It felt like Vee was having some fun with the hopper, but Willow was deep in her screen checking Unmeatabel was available on Mars.

They stopped at a place that had a steady line of students flowing in and out. Inside looked like an insect hive with all the people grabbing bags, or taking trays to a table. It was all too much for Willow. That many people pressed together pushed Willow far away from her happy place. To cope with it, Willow stayed close to Vee and kept checking Maul was close behind, so she was sandwiched between two people she knew.

Once they found a place to sit, Willow scanned the table tag, and set about ordering for herself so she didn't have to talk to anyone.

He had not been to Mars for 20 years, so he was not the best tour guide. The Sparrowhawk, though, was a pleasure to drive. of course speed and altitude was severely limited by local law inside the city, but that did not prevent an occasional burst of spirited driving. It was nothing to draw attention, but enough to feel shifting G-forces of acceleration, deceleration and maneuvering.

Once they sat down at a table, Vasil said to Maul. "To answer your question back on the HP, the racing version tops off at 800 kilometers per hour in straight line runs. That civvy version is maybe half that and limited to 400m altitude." Vasil started looking over the menu, musing, "Of course, we'd have to get out of the city and over open water to test that out."

Vasil Vasilescu checked out, and Count Archibald, Creamy's dad, confirmed that his son had been missing for a long time now. Séraphine already had her personal AI Océane on the job.

The AI was also looking into Vasil Vasilescu, how he happened to arrive here on Creamy's old ship, and who he was travelling with. Océane was primarily tasked with putting Creamy's last known movements together, but Séraphine had already downloaded the latest Ninette, and she was reading the dater as she typed a replay to the message she had received.

Very well Monsieur Vasilescu. One of my Achilles droids will be waiting for you at the Computer Science campus entrances. Any will do, there will be a droid waiting to lead you to my lab.

I eagerly await your arrival.

"Océane, inhabit a unit at each gate s'il te plaît. When you see Monsieur Vasilescu, be cordial, and bring his party to me. Merci"

Maul bit into the greasy burger and was mid chew when Vasil had mentioned the idea of taking a hopper out over open water. He grunted excitedly at the thought of it and gulped the bite down. "Ah man, maybe we could rent a couple and..." He stopped short as it seemed that Vasil had been distracted by a notification. "Yo did she actually respond?"
26 Aug 2024, 1:19am
Vasil tapped the comm badge on the collar of his ERS flight suit, forgetting for the moment that he had hitched a ride with Willow and he had no connection to any of the COVAS installed on ships he usually flew for ERS. Checking his pad, he read the message from Dr Etienne.

"Yeah, this is her.," he said reading the message from Dr Etienne. "Hmph Monsieur Vasilescu. Yes, she seems quite French. Canape' and creme brule' French, not french fries French. I'll let her know we are on the way."

Vasil sent a quick reply. Doctor, we will be there in ninety minutes.

"That should give us plenty of time to eat and get to OVU." Vasil set the pad on the table and connected to Luxe Velocity. Scrolling through their available sparrowhawks, he asked Willow, "What about you? Fancy some high speed engine testing?"
26 Aug 2024, 8:01am
"Wow, I hope someone more dedicated comes looking for me if I get taken" Said Willow boring daggers into Maul. "Oh, have been taken by some assholes? Yeah, we'll get right on that after messing about on the river. After that, your priority one"

Vasil had obviously never been held prisoner by violent fuckheads that only took you to use as a bargaining chip. Maul should know better, so their dude level speed freaking was pissing her off.

"No guys, I wouldn't. I fly at multiples of light speed, so kicking up some spay at sub light sounds dull AF, okay?"

Willow had a point. It did seem frivolous to spend time enjoying the whine and acceleration of a high performance engine. It was not so much the speed, but the crushing G-forces that came with sudden acceleration and quick maneuvering that appealed to Vasil. That, though, sounded like a weak justification.

Voicing his opinion that Creamy was likely dead and that a few hours of distraction didn’t much matter would not go over well with her either. He knew Willow would want to put just as much effort into recovering his remains to provide closure for the family as she would rescuing him.

He was not going to mention that the family had apparently done nothing serious to find Creamy for over a year. Before he was summoned back by his sister, Vasil had spoken only a few sentences to anyone in his family for nearly 30 years. So, the family’s casual attitude was the weakest excuse to test the limits of sparrowhawk.

And to top it all off, Willow had seemed withdrawn and slightly on edge since they left the Honour Promise.

“You’re right, Willow. It does seem insensitive to indulge ourselves right now.” Vasil tucked the small pad into a pocket on his suit. “There is a pro race circuit on Cemiess that lets you rent the actual race versions and fly the circuit. Maybe we’ll rent some racers once this is over.”

Kasumi Goto"Well, then, time to go back."

Security seemed to be everywhere now as we left - or was I just more aware after we did something illegal? - and I felt their watchful eyes as I made my way to the hangar. I mingled with the other pilots, but the atmosphere felt heavy and tense. Once inside, I headed straight for my ship, my mind buzzing with what the data Kasumi retrieved from her hack might reveal.

The station’s traffic was as busy as ever, making it a while before I could leave through the mail slot and head in the direction of the system where my carrier was located. Even as I departed, I could not shake the feeling of being watched, though there was no one in pursuit. My Mamba moved away from the station with her usual ease, but my thoughts were far from being calm. A meeting on the carrier to discuss everything in detail was probably a wise decision.

After a brief period of rapid acceleration, I jumped out to the carrier. Soon after I approached its hangar where my companion was already waiting for me.
26 Aug 2024, 3:04pm
I'd kept a close eye on my contacts - in case sensors picked up even the faintest trace of anybody trying to follow us back to the carrier after that, relatively, short station visit - but the only thing which they picked up was my companion's Mamba almost shadowing me. In a weirdly funny way, it seemed fitting, considering that certain extravagant body shape which anyone behind me beheld... at least, even more than they would from the front.

"Will wait, for you, in my ship.", I announced over our shared channel. "Think, that will be faster. You walk, better."

Or at least just able to walk quicker without as much effort. And also would not have to fight through a crowd of gawkers in the carrier's corridors, because who would expect this shape to be waltzing around?
26 Aug 2024, 7:11pm
I landed the ship in the dock of my carrier, the familiar hum of the engines fading as I powered down my Mamba. The docking bay was a hive of activity, but my focus was solely on the sleek, imposing figure of the Phantom in the neighboring dock. Kasumi’s ship.

As I stepped out of the cockpit, I adjusted my Maverick suit and felt the reassuring weight of the gear on my shoulders, my favorite of all the suits. Walking towards the Phantom, I couldn’t help but let my mind wander. Kasumi was always a step ahead, her presence both a comfort and a challenge. I wondered what she was up to, because she had certainly already sifted through all the data she retrieved during our visit to the Pioneer's shop.

The ship loomed larger with each step, its dark hull swallowing the dim lights of the dock. I reached the base of the boarding ramp and paused. Though I was quite sure she already knew I was coming, I made my presence known via our shared channel.

“An open sesame probably won’t do it… How about letting me in?"

Vasil Vasilescu

Maul nodded in agreement and looked at Willow. "Of course, you're totally right. I guess I just caught up in the conversation." He stopped and thought again about how his own parents would have felt if he'd been missing for this long, if they were still alive they'd be in shambles. It was time to buckle down and be better than this. "Finding Goodness is priority number one."

Still looking at Willow, he gave her a smile and a respectful bow of the head. "Thanks for the reality check there." He'd taken notice of how her demeanor had changed since arriving. He too used to struggle with such large crowds of strangers. Having near panic attacks or wild mood shifts when feeling overwhelmed. "And you know what? Fuck this crowd, eh? Don't let them intimidate you. You're fuckin' 'Willow Thorn', you're smarter than half these assholes and tougher than any of them." His eyes glanced at her hand briefly. "Look into the 5-4-3-2-1 technique." He nodded solemnly, showing that he understood how she felt. "It can really help sometimes."

Haraldsen“An open sesame probably won’t do it… How about letting me in?"

"Just, take the elevator. You, already have, permission."

Out of courtesy, I opened up the airlock doors and sent down the little elevator-thingy which acted as the entry way to the Phantom, anyway.

"Come on, in. There is... a lot, to discuss."

Or at least a fair bit of information. And some of it was quite relevant either to our operation now, or the pace at which we wanted to perform it. Part of me certainly felt we really did not want to be here when that dumb Azimuth ship arrived - or at least not be causing any trouble over at their hidden base in the asteroid belt, by virtue of being done causing it there. We just needed to know where it was first, and I hadn't gotten particularly wise from the data yet. Maybe the precise location, or its coordinates, were hidden in some clever way in the text, but it eluded my semi-functional brain, if so.

Matters were not helped by my focus periodically slipping, because I was getting those signals that demanded attention be diverted toward my soft curved parts. And a wayward hand had already found its way there a couple of times, more so the more sensitive upper one, than the lower section... even if both were quite 'interesting' in their own respect.
27 Aug 2024, 12:03am
The inner airlock doors slid open with a soft hiss after I went up and stepped into the ship, removing the helmet of my Maverick suit while doing so. The Phantom’s interior was just as I remembered from my last visit when it was docked in Inara and Kasumi and I met for the first time.

I walked towards the cockpit, my steps echoing softly in the quiet ship. There I surveyed the room, noticing the sparse decor, the special made pilot seat and the woman waiting for me.

I raised an eyebrow, intrigued. “You wanted us to talk here about the data you retrieved from the station? It must be quite something then.”

“May I?” I took the helmet under my arm and sat into the copilot's seat, crossing my legs and leaning back slightly.

“So, what’s this data we need to discuss?”
27 Aug 2024, 1:41am
I’d spun around in my seat as the cockpit doors opened up with a gentle hiss, when the hydraulic mechanism activated. Wasn’t doing anything… particularly important, anyway, and watched her move over to one of the other seats available.

“Of course, you may.”, I answered to the inquiry about sitting down. “And the, data… see, for yourself.”

My right hand pushed a button to show what I had uncovered, on the co-pilot displays. Between the Tritium shipments, the Guardian relics and those Thargoid samples with a relation to Helix, it seemed we’d stumbled on more than just the trail of the dangerous bioweapon.

“Have, not yet… seen anything useful, about where the base is. In this system, with the Helix thing. Maybe, you could find something?”, I also added, while the other woman was reading. And hopefully not getting too distracted at my big form taking up so much of even a seat that was custom-made to its… ‘unique spatial demands’.

After lunch, the ride to OVU took them past the Federal Congress and the High Court, and over the many public spaces and parks of Olympus Village Central Government District. Vasil had not expected there to be so much green space in the center of a city built of glass and steel. Though impressive natural spaces, the parks inherited the same characteristics of the city that enclosed them; they appeared too well ordered and rigid, as if designed by computer for the most efficient use of space and carefully maintained by legions of automated machines.

If Olympus Village was a machine city, the University, especially the Computer Sciences campus, was a technophile’s Elysium and a luddite’s Hell. What Vasil at first thought was an automated statue at the gates of the campus was, in fact, one of the androids the Dr. had said would be waiting.

“Bienvenu, Monsieur Vasilescu. If you and your companions will follow me, I will escort you to Dr. Etienne.”

Of course the robot is French, thought Vasil. Why wouldn’t it be.
