Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Your guests' madam" said the white and red Achilles droid before Océane left it.

The droid came back online and took a moment to orientate it's self, making it look confused before it strode out of the lab. The pause as the droid worked out where it was, and where it should be, always reminded Séraphine how eager people are to assign human traits to the digital process.

"Welcome welcome" Séraphine stood up with open arms and weaving her way between work stations where industrious students and research staff probed the boundaries of the binary mind.

"Please, follow me to my office" cast from her as she veered away from the nobel hunters when she was almost close enough to touch. "It's the ominous looking box of mirrored glass overlooking the lab. I think my predecessor enjoyed too much science fiction, no?"

With her coat billowing behind her, Séraphine looked like the ghost of freedom haunting a workspace of the oppressed. She didn't check to see if she was being followed, she already had her mind or three other tasks. She was still reading questions from people that had attended her lecture, and answering them on a pad worn thin from the friction of her thumb moving over it. She was also rewriting parts of her lecture in her mind to stop the common questions she was being bombarded with.

Camaras and robotic arms were the motif of her personal space. Only screens and keyboards had any chance of outnumbering them. When she walked in, camaras followed her, and the party coming up the steps behind her. Appendages took Séraphine's coat, and another gave her a small bowl of something brown and hot as she sat down. It was a move so fluid, it was obviously a habit.

"Très bien. Where to start. Please don't mind this" said Séraphine gesturing to her text scrolling glasses and waving her thump smoothed pad in their direction. "People get your contact and don't stop questioning your point of view, even after the Q&A. Be assured, you have the majorité of my attention. Sit anywhere, please"

Kasumi Goto“Have, not yet… seen anything useful, about where the base is. In this system, with the Helix thing. Maybe, you could find something?”, I also added, while the other woman was reading. And hopefully not getting too distracted at my big form taking up so much of even a seat that was custom-made to its… ‘unique spatial demands’.

I glanced at the data Kasumi had pulled up on the co-pilot display, scrutinizing it closely. The impression of frantic activity we had noticed during our arrival and departure was confirmed by the information displayed.

“Looks like they’re expecting some high-profile visitor soon. And here I thought this was a sleepy station in the middle of nowhere,” I remarked with a grimace.

“That explains the level of security measures - this place is guarded tighter than Alba Tesreau's knickers. But if the Herald of Salvation is really the ship from the news about the murdered whistleblower, it’s not surprising. Though, honestly, who seriously thinks they can hide something that big for long? Did you read that? 14,000 tons of tritium are being stockpiled just for that ship. Those amounts of fuel alone are far from invisible…”

I pondered briefly how likely it was that police forces would soon follow the ship, but quickly dismissed the thought. It was more likely that the ship would remain completely unbothered here. The place was remote, and aside from the fleets of the major powers, I couldn’t imagine anyone taking on the security forces here and coming out victorious. Especially since the group of carriers we saw in the system probably wasn’t here by accident and provided additional protection with their escort ships. That was a lot of firepower, especially for a supposedly non-military operation. And that didn’t even take into account what kind of combat power the Herald of Salvation might bring to bear.

“So, what do you think so far? I admit, this ship is an interesting target, but I think this is way too big for us. Especially here, where security forces are swarming. But maybe we could find out something about its route… and then there’s the matter of the Helix.”
27 Aug 2024, 3:05pm
"I, would like, to focus on Helix.", I answered, cautiously. "Get, it... out of the way, before that... ship, shows up. Because, you know, it will make them... even more alert. Would, rather not, cause trouble, in that lab thingy... then."

I felt like I had a point with that, at least.

"But, first... we need to find, where. All I found, says it is ..." I fished in my head for it, going quiet for a second. "... in the, asteroid belt. First one. But, not, too sure... where. And, maybe after, we can look at, the big ship. Or, simply leave, to... avoid attention."

Creamy Goodness III"Sit anywhere, please"

The three visitors drew a few curious glances as they followed the Doctor to her office. Definitely not visiting colleagues, particularly with Vasil’s custom black and gold flight suit standing in such stark contrast to the lab-coated minions that it marked him as probably Imperial.

Though the mirrored office and lab did have a certain evil mastermind vibe to it, like the lab was the secret moonbase lair of a spy movie villain, it was the excessive use of technology that struck Vasil as dystopian. At some point all the time saving convenience it offered eventually morphed into reliance, which began a death spiral of needing to create more tech to make a person's limited time more efficient. Eventually it would become difficult to find the line between human and machine.

Once in the office it was a minor annoyance that by the Doctor's own admission they had the majority of the Doctor's attention rather than her full attention, but Vasil did not let it show. Before taking a seat, he introduced Maul and Willow. “Doctor, this is Mr. Maul Montressor, one of the ERS computer and info security consultants. And this is one of our engineering consultants Wilomena Weishout von Thornenseid, of the Calhuacan von Thornenseids.” And just like that, as professional and straight-faced as ever, Vasil got a little payback for Willow’s orca piloting joke on him and Maul.

“Well, caution is definitely warranted. The folks here seem better organized than the usual Azimuth scum you run into.”

I scratched my nose thoughtfully, which always started itching after prolonged use of filtered air.

“Hmm. So far, I’ve mostly read about Guardian material. This stuff seems to be coming in by the truckload. Could it be for that Dawnbreaker cannon? Ages ago, we stumbled upon an encrypted message and the start of a test phase…”

I continued reading the display, scrolling through the endless entries and cargo lists. Finally, I found what my companion had mentioned.

“There it is. Something about large quantities of Thargoid tissues for a Helix lab. Unfortunately, nothing about the exact location of the lab… maybe we can track down the transporter thanks to the information in this message exchange?"

Request message
Subject: Request for Thargoid Tissues for Helix Testing

Dear Prof. Huxley,

I hope this message finds you well and not in the middle of a Thargoid encounter!
We’re currently making huge progress on a new and improved batch of Helix and need some Thargoid tissues for our next testing phase. Your help in providing these materials would be invaluable to our research and development efforts. Plus, it might just save us from a few more sleepless nights in the lab.
Could you please let us know the availability and any specific requirements for obtaining the Thargoid tissues? We promise to handle them with the utmost care and only a little bit of overbearing enthusiasm.

On a side note, I have to admit that the A-Belt Lab isn’t quite as impressive as Lab 23 was, and that we all miss Dr. Elara Kivinen dearly - but the team here does an exceptional job, and I feel that at least a few of them qualify for the Phoenix Protocol. Maybe you can put in a good word for us. It’s easier to research dangerous things when having a backup!

Thank you for your support and cooperation. We owe you one - maybe even a cup of our finest Starbud space coffee!

Best regards,
Fox Johnson

Response message
Subject: Re: Request for Thargoid Tissues for Helix Testing

Dear Dr. Fox,

Thank you for your enthusiastic message! It’s always a pleasure to hear about the incredible progress being made on the Helix Project. Your dedication and hard work are truly commendable, and I am confident that your efforts will yield groundbreaking results.

I am pleased to inform you that we have arranged for a freighter from Azimuth Logistics to deliver the requested Thargoid tissues to your laboratory in the asteroid belt. You will be pleased to know that the T7 is filled to the brim with over 300 tons of the desired material! The shipment from beta site should arrive with the last carrier of a group of five very soon. Please ensure that all necessary precautions are taken when handling these materials, as their unique properties require careful management.

I understand that the A-Belt Lab may not have the same charm as Lab 23, and Dr. Elara Kivinen’s absence is certainly felt by all of us. However, I have no doubt that your team is more than capable of achieving great things. I will certainly put in a good word for those deserving of the Phoenix Protocol. Having a backup is indeed a wise strategy when dealing with such volatile research.

Keep up the excellent work, and don’t hesitate to reach out if you need further assistance. I look forward to hearing about your continued success. And yes, I would love to try that Starbud space coffee sometime!

Best regards,
Quentin K. Huxley

Vasil Vasilescu“Doctor, this is Mr. Maul Montressor, one of the ERS computer and info security consultants. And this is one of our engineering consultants Wilomena Weishout von Thornenseid, of the Calhuacan von Thornenseids.”

"Wilomena?" Said Willow, that introduction had distracted her from the robot arm she was inspecting. It looked like it had advanced tactile sensors. "Like, thats not a name I'd use if I was real old, like 50 or something"

Stepping forward, Willow introduced her self. "So, like I'm Willow Thorn, hi. I'm here coz I'm good at finding what's lost, and we've lost a guy that has one of, well, what we guess is one of your custom covas"
27 Aug 2024, 5:38pm
Vasil was going to have to step up in the payback department. Willow bushed off his meager attempt at payback like she was shooing away a fly and managed to get a dig in at his age in the process. "You are definitely a Thornenseid," he said to Willow to acknowledge her superior skills.

Haraldsen“There it is. Something about large quantities of Thargoid tissues for a Helix lab. Unfortunately, nothing about the exact location of the lab… maybe we can track down the transporter thanks to the information in this message exchange?"

"I, guess... that, is our best, bet, at finding it. Will, have to find it... though. Maybe ..." I paused, rather than continuing to think out loud, then put my thought process into words. "Do we know, how many carriers have arrived, already? Or, I think, it means... megaships."

I also provided my answer to the other relevant part of what she'd said.

"And, yes.. I, think, it could be, for that weapon. The Guardian... thingys. Do we know, what materials, it needs?"

Willow ThornStepping forward, Willow introduced her self. "So, like I'm Willow Thorn, hi. I'm here coz I'm good at finding what's lost, and we've lost a guy that has one of, well, what we guess is one of your custom covas"

Vasil Vasilescu"You are definitely a Thornenseid," he said to Willow to acknowledge her superior skills.

Maul smirked at Vasil's remark and stepped forward to explain more about the situation that had brought the three of them here.

"Ninette, I assume she is one of your pet projects, Doctor? Hardware's dated but she's still more complex than half of the off shelf AI's that the big corps are shelling out in their 'convenience packages' today." To anyone else this would have been a compliment but he was certain that to Séraphine, it was simply a fact.

Taking his backpack off, he took a seat and continued.

"We're here because this COVAS was gutted from the ship of Charles Goodness. He's been missing for longer than anyone is comfortable with and we've been tasked with finding some sort of evidence and bringing some closure to his family. Only catch is, we don't have a last known location on Goodness, but we suspect Ninette does. I tried to gain access to the jump log history within the COVAS but found that there was a failsafe in place that'd likely wipe the COVAS and all the data. So we monitored the traffic, found an upload that had weaseled its way out the system and after digging through the web of proxies, we found that it lead us here to OVU. I suppose that's no coincidence, eh?"

I also provided my answer to the other relevant part of what she'd said.

"And, yes.. I, think, it could be, for that weapon. The Guardian... thingys. Do we know, what materials, it needs?"

"Two megaships were already present in that system when we flew to the station, and then the signs of a third arrival showed up. I didn’t pay much attention during our departure, but there must have been three by then. It probably won’t be long before there are five – quite an impressive force. Hard to imagine Thor Biometrics pulling this off alone, even though half the computers out there run their biometric authentication system."

I shifted the helmet that was getting uncomfortable under my left arm to my right. Then I continued.

“No idea what they need the Guardian technology for in relation to the Dawnbreaker, or what kind and how much. In an older message we decrypted, the Herald of Salvation requested 700 units of meta-alloys for the transition to a new test phase. That amount of resources for a single weapon is staggering, even if a prototype would consume more resources than the final version. This thing must be gigantic. From that point of view, the rumor that it's a planet killer doesn't seem so far-fetched anymore...”
27 Aug 2024, 9:42pm
“So… what now? We wait? Waiting is boring.”

Very boring, if my tone was to be believed. Yet, there really wasn’t much of another option. Without any further clues in the data, our only shot at finding the hidden Helix lab was the transport heading for it.

But tracking it would have to be done carefully, else we were rather liable to attract a lot of unwarranted attention. Especially if the ‘special guest’ of a ship arrived right alongside the final carrier group, and we could not discount that from the equation. I did decide to read the second message again, and realized I had made a slight mistake.

“Oh. It says, five carriers, not five groups.”
27 Aug 2024, 10:21pm
“It probably won't be too long before the fifth megaship is finally here, although we can't say exactly how much time will pass between the jumps of the individual megaships. I assume that they come from different places and will work together in a group from here on."

My fingers drummed unconsciously on my helmet as I pondered.

“So maybe we shouldn't stay here too long. The question is how we can track the transporter, assuming we can identify it, without attracting attention. I assume our plan remains to find and blow up the Helix lab?”
27 Aug 2024, 10:32pm
"I, think so, yes. Unless, you want to borrow it."

That was of course just teasing. I knew neither of us had any particular interest in "borrowing" Helix, or a lab developing it, for that matter.

"But, yes, good question... for, how to find, the transport. And, follow it. I, have... no idea."

Maul Montresor
"We're here because this COVAS was gutted from the ship of Charles Goodness. He's been missing for longer than anyone is comfortable with and we've been tasked with finding some sort of evidence and bringing some closure to his family. Only catch is, we don't have a last known location on Goodness, but we suspect Ninette does. I suppose that's no coincidence, eh?"

"Fail safe? For Creamy's personal assistant?" laughed Séraphine "No no my treasure" she said referencing Maul's last name. "Put such a thing on his computer, and he'll be losing data every day" No, Ninette picked a password anyone that knows Creamy well enough, would know"

The screens around Séraphine were displaying images of the search party, along with publicly available information about them. Maul's image had Fugitive, blinking in red over his much younger face.

"Oui oui Océane, I know. Forgiver her Monsieur Vasilescu. Océane is concerned that you tromper, um, mislead me. Especially with such a dangerous criminal in your employ" an unconcerned smile stretched her red lips "She dose not grasp hyperbole" Séraphine explained as an apology for Océane adherence to facts.

"Mercédès. Séraphine said addressing Maul again "Oh, that book. How he loved that book. He didn't grasp the story, but he was so happy when he could read the French original. Creamy never like the conclusion of Edmond and Mercédès affair, but he is always so passionné about such things"

A far away blankness cast it's self over Séraphine, but her content smile kept away any shadows. Even her thumb stopped moving for a moment. Then she felt something else needed an explanation.

"Dated Hardware? Ninette is dated, so simpliste compared to Océane, but Ninette was one of my first attempts at an adaptable assistant AI, vous comprenez? Pah! it is a program, and it can run on any Federation standard covas. Why such old handwear I wonder?"

"Ninette, Es-tu réveillé?" asked Séraphine.

A dormant screen blinked into life and code rushed by, a live representation of Ninette running. "Oui mademoiselle, comment puis-je vous aider"

"English if you will Ninette. So, what is it you need to know?" Séraphine asked the searchers.
28 Aug 2024, 1:18am
A quiet “Hmph” was the only outward sign Vasil was both surprised and irritated at how simple the password was. He’d considered that maybe it was either Edmund, Mercedes, or Haydee but thought that the question Ninette asked had some deeper meaning and that the password could not be that damn simple.

He’d given Mecedes the lowest chance of working, but with all they were learning about Creamy, it made sense. Simple, straight forward, no thought, just what is right in front of you.

“I suppose it is better than Haydee,” he said, thinking aloud. “And all of the implications the modern mind places on the Edmund-Haydee relationship.”

“Anyway, fifteen-hundred-year-old French literature aside, I came into possession of Ninette in the Summerland system a few weeks ago. What we need to know is her movements prior to that. Where she was, when she was powered on or off, removed from or placed into a ship’s interface, if she recorded anything about her surroundings, the last time she registered any of Cream- I mean Goodness’ vitals.” He realized that sounded like an incredibly large amount of data, yet he looked to Willow and Maul for more. “You two are the big brains here, am I missing anything?”
