Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I’m not so sure about this… The Thor system really seems to be a whole lot of nothing. But maybe you’re right, and the data’s faulty. Or maybe the company’s registration is bogus.”

I settled into the pilot’s seat, making myself comfortable as the Mamba was prepped for launch, being lifted up to the carrier’s deck.

“You know what I think about long hikes as a space nomad…”

This was turning into a bit of an inside joke already.

“…so I sure hope we won’t need a ground mission. I wear my Maverick suit more out of habit; it’s my thing, makes me feel at home. Anyway, this time we won’t be stumbling upon an abandoned station - but we might need to do some digging into this Helix business.”
20 Aug 2024, 8:17pm
“Well, then, let’s… go. My ship is ready, and I, am, too.”

That was more my way of saying ‘We are going now’, and I accompanied it by taking off, setting up for a jump to the system with that asteroid station. I was rather ready for something a little more ‘action’, a little less word.
20 Aug 2024, 9:37pm
Yeah, there we were again, diving headfirst into the next adventure - though a bit of preparation wouldn’t hurt. I sighed, then followed Kasumi, who had just launched from my carrier and was now getting ready for the jump.

A short while later, my Mamba followed her, and after a quick jump, I found myself in our target system, not far from her ship. Immediately, my scanners picked up a flurry of activity, and the holographic display was overflowing with symbols and markers showing ships of various classes. I hadn’t expected this at all!

With a few swift moves, I brought some order to my display. Further away, there was a small group of transports apparently heading towards the asteroid station, called Sagan Research Centre. Much closer to us was a small flotilla consisting of two Wells-class carrier mega ships, swarmed by a multitude of escort and security vessels. And just then, the telltale signs of another large ship’s arrival appeared.

I opened a channel to Kasumi.

“Damn, it’s pretty busy here. Let’s not get too close to the mega ships, might make the security nervous.”
20 Aug 2024, 9:46pm
“Busy, yes.”, I replied. “But, they keep clear, of the station, anyway. So, go there, and… should, be fine.”

Should was the key word, but as of yet nobody around here had a particular reason to be suspicious of our ships, and we had no reason to go poke those megaships yet, while they always maintained a certain safety distance to stations. A standard security scan would not give the locals any reason to be upset, either. At least in my case - couldn’t speak for my less legally inclined companion.

For now, I simply set my ship on a leisurely course to the asteroid station at three-quarters throttle, and enjoyed the view of the nebula nearby.

I saw Kasumi fly off in the direction of the astroid base and hurried to follow her. As we approached the station, we caught up with the lumbering and slow transporters enough to get them within range of my scanner. Curious as I was, I couldn't resist the temptation and found out that the Type-9 in front of me was loaded to the brim with Tritium. However, my activities did not go undetected and I was immediately approached by two Viper MkIV from local security.

“Mamba, cease scanning ships and other objects in this system IMMEDIATELY. Scanning is permitted only for authorized security vessels.”

My own ship was then subjected to a security scan. From the looks of it, the security staff here had a very watchful eye on everything that was going on.

“Proceed with your flight, but make sure to adhere to the rules in place here!”

I did as I was told and flew towards the station behind Kasumi. Not long afterwards, we were greeted by the station's flight control.

“Welcome to Sagan Research Centre. This station is the property of Thor Biometrics. Strict regulations apply to the use of scanners or drones. Carrying weapons or hacking tools is not permitted. Follow the instructions of the security personnel at all times. There are already three other ships in the queue in front of you. Please join the queue and be patient for a moment. If you wish, you can use the automatic docking procedure. Thor Biometrics wishes you a pleasant stay.”
21 Aug 2024, 3:08pm
“Blah blah”, I childishly remarked over our private channel, while sending a request to dock through the ship’s holo-interface. “Not impressed. And this much security, for a deep space outpost, not suspicious. At all.”

A hint of sarcasm was of course slipped into that second statement. I also let the automatic systems take over so I could talk freely.

“So, what do we do, when, inside? And, I have ‘ways’, to slip things in, unseen.”

‘Things’ referring to my hacking device, which could just act as a simple storage add-on attached to my wrist computer, rather than the useful tool which it actually was.

“That’s a whole lot of security, alright. And they’re watching like hawks. Almost feels like a prison…” I replied over the private channel.

“I also wonder why they need so much Tritium here. If all three Type-9s are loaded with Tritium, that’s about 2100 tons in this shipment alone. I’d get it if it was for the carriers, but it seems like they’re bringing the Tritium to the station rather than loading up.”

I linked the Mamba’s onboard computer to the automated docking system and waited for my turn.

“What do you think, can we get more info from the trade computer after landing with your tool? The question isn’t whether your tool can do it, but whether we’ll get caught and shot to pieces for it…”
21 Aug 2024, 4:15pm
"Probably, yeah. Just... need an access, point. Somewhere. Or, I could try to hack in, remotely, but more difficult. And, more likely, to trigger alarms."

I glanced outward, after presenting both options. Triggering alerts was not a thing we wanted to do here.

"Do not, suppose... any ways, to bypass security, here? After, we are inside. Would suggest vents, but... they, are probably, monitored, too. And hard, to fit through. Or, could still try to disguise, my tool, as a harmless... whatever. Analyzer, for machinery, or something."

Couldn't say any good ideas were really coming to my mind, and my big curves were certainly a bit of a complication to sneaking around... not just by virtue of drawing literally everyone's gazes wherever I went.
21 Aug 2024, 4:41pm
“Using the vents sounds like a terrible idea. You can bet your ass that’s monitored, especially with how picky that Viper pilot already was.”

I paused for a moment, considering the situation and what my companion had said.

“Disguising the tool is definitely a good idea. And to get into maintenance, we’d need some disguises and probably the right ID cards. Let’s land first and see what people are saying. I think the shops or the bar would be a good starting point to gather some intel - maybe a little shopping trip for our suits?”
21 Aug 2024, 4:55pm
“Uh …” I scratched my head in sort of an embarrassed manner, even though nobody but me was in the cockpit. “Finding, a disguise, for me… not going to be easy. Same for your, suit shopping, idea. And I have no reason, to. Already have all, I need.”

I went silent for a moment while my ship passed through the ‘mail slot’ and oriented with its assigned landing pad - number 18.

“Public station terminals, too exposed. And, even if, we got into, restricted areas… we would not know, where to look.”

It occurred to me then, that maybe I could have used the holo-disguise to pretend to be a maintenance worker, but… that thing would probably not fly a security scan. So it was better to not chance it with that, especially while I wanted to keep it for other purposes.
21 Aug 2024, 6:02pm
“I get it, you’ve already got everything you need, probably better gear than what we can find here. It’s just about playing the part. A harmless excuse to strike up a conversation and scope things out.”

I didn’t necessarily think we could - or I could - pass off as maintenance workers, even though I had managed to pull off a decent Azimuth officer impersonation recently. Maybe other opportunities would present themselves once we were in the lion’s den.

“Anyway, I can imagine trying to dress you up will cause some distraction and chaos. Maybe that’ll get us access to a computer or some other entry point.”

I leaned back as the Mamba initiated its automatic landing. Hopefully, our landing pads weren’t too far apart, and I wouldn’t have to walk too much again.
21 Aug 2024, 6:18pm
I put on a stupid, annoyed look at that joke about 'dressing me up'... but chose to avoid further comments on the matter.

"Just, let me know, when you have ideas. I can wait, on the ship, until then. Or, try to go through security. Surely, they would not ban, personal electronic devices."

That was just an assumption, though I figured a personal data device would not draw any particular attention or suspicion to it, given the variety of things which it could be used to handle, that a public station computer was not good for. My ship arrived on the landing pad, and I chose to have it moved into the hangar, such that I was at least partially ready to get going, once we were decided on some basic action plan.
22 Aug 2024, 9:46am
“Going to the equipment shop was my idea...,” I retorted dryly, a smirk playing on my lips.

“....And a damn serious one at that. I figured we could stir up a bit of chaos there and, with your nifty tool, maybe get remote access to their network through the shop's computer.”

Besides, it wouldn’t hurt to scope out the place on our way and soak in the general vibe. Maybe we could even figure out more about what was going on here. The origins of the people might be a good starting point.

As the Mamba came to a halt, I readied myself to disembark.
22 Aug 2024, 10:06am
“Ok. Fine. I, will… wait, near the shop. If, you do not get there, first.”

The chances of that were pretty high, between my unusual appearance likely resulting in higher scrutiny, nevermind that it would also be responsible for a slower walking pace unless I tried harder than was really necessary, right now.

I stood up from the pilot’s seat and, knowing weapons were not allowed, just left those here. A knife wouldn’t fly either - metal detectors’d find that in an instant… so, all that was left was to set up my tool to give off the illusion of a simple maintenance device which would transmit its findings back to the wrist computer. Or maybe I’d go with it as a memory stick add-on… either way, I hoped it would be enough to slip it past security. That, and temporarily removing any traces of the hacking programs and routines normally on it.

Then, apparently… we were going to terrorize some shop owners with my ridiculous curves. I had to admit, part of me found the idea quite fun. And maybe an unexpected positive to it, since being so big was otherwise not particularly practical to the sneaky stuff, which we were trying to do.
22 Aug 2024, 4:03pm
“Agreed. I'll be on my way now - see you outside the store.”

I ended the private connection, shut down all active systems and left my ship. The layout of most of the stations followed the same pattern, so it was almost impossible to get lost - at least as far as the official routes and facilities such as the stores and bar were concerned. As I left the hangar, I noticed that the layout of this base also seemed to follow the general blueprint, apart from the color scheme and the omnipresent Thor Biometrics logos emblazoned on almost every major surface - at least it seemed quite exaggerated to me.

'Probably indicates very territorial behavior,' I thought. Which in turn matched the very present security. Not only had we seen plenty of security ships on the approach to the station, I also passed quite a few guards inside the station. However, they hardly seemed to take any notice of me, there was a brief, scrutinizing glance in my direction from time to time, and that was it. Of course, I couldn't rule out the possibility that there were sensors hidden under their closed helmets. I hoped that Kasumi wouldn't run into any problems with her magic tool, but I was quite confident that she would manage.

After a short time, I reached the center of the station, from where I walked up a flight of stairs to the store already announced by signs, where weapons and suits were sold. My companion was nowhere to be seen, so I sat down on a bench near the store entrance and waited.
