Elite roleplay: Off station

OFF STATION

Your ship, deep space, anything that is not happening inside the Citi Gateway or Ingaba...

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

I didn't get to wander too far from my ship and out of the hangar before one of the ubiquitous security guards took a certain... 'interest', in me. The reason for it was not entirely obvious, though.

"Need anything?", I politely asked, trying to look normal. As normal as a person of my physical appearance could still look.

The man just gave me a good look over, maybe thinking about proceeding with a physical inspection - gaze also lingering on those "expanded" parts a bit longer - before deciding against it, by the look on his face. Maybe because it would have been just a little too awkward.

"Move along, pilot. And obey station regulations."

Perhaps my appearance was also making him a bit nervous. But observing from the corner of the eye as I walked along, I could definitely see that his gaze was rather directed downward... all for the better, because it meant less attention toward my wrist computer, and its not-so-innocent attachment. Adding artificial sway to the hips was unnecessary, my required movement style quite emphasized their width already as it was.

A part of me was glad I was not getting any bigger than this, still... because it was just as big as it could be for me to like it, and have even the smallest bit of practicality to it. Though it would have been an 'interesting' problem to have, and embarrassing if it were to be occurring in public, but those were strange thoughts to be reserved for 'experimentation' in a VR environment. Maybe I would test that again some day. For now, I had someone waiting for me in the central areas, and I waved as soon as I got there, following the signs to the store we were pretending to go to. Not that I would have needed to wave, just me walking up was obvious enough. Extremely so, even.
22 Aug 2024, 5:01pm
From my cozy spot, very close to the stairs and also the entrance to the store, which raved in its windows about the good quality and low prices of its suits, I saw my companion trudging up the stairs and waving to me. So I waved back and stood up a moment later when she had taken the last few steps.

“There is more security here in this station than visitors,” I remarked as we met in front of the store entrance. Which was perhaps not surprising, considering that this system was a little out of the way. Nevertheless, the amount of security still made me wonder.

“I don't see any security guards in the store itself. But watch out, there could be cameras there. I've only seen few cameras in general, when there seems to be so much emphasis on security here. Whatever that means. Maybe they're just very well hidden.”

I took a few steps towards the entrance of the store and then indicated with a slight nod of my head that I would let my companion go first.

Inside, clearly visible to us, there was a sales clerk talking to a customer, and another customer who had apparently just lost interest was heading for the exit - our entrance.

"You... go, ahead. I, will... look around."

Pretending to be interested in weapons, of course, because I would not be after a suit. But any of these official storefronts would only be selling the cheap Pioneer weapons... which gave me an idea. Because we were also far out, and regulations would be handled in a... more lax way. I lowered my voice.

"Maybe, you could ask, to be, shown the... 'interesting stuff'."

I winked at my companion, expecting that particular side of her to pick up on what I meant, since there was that pirate half I was not exactly fond of, and merely tolerated, at least while we worked together.

Anri sat slumped over in the concourse bar once more as she thought about the lab tests being run while she sat and waited on this little rock.
"Four days to a week at least", Biometrics was usually pretty simple, cut and dry comparison of a persons records.
Of course they had to use the "special" sites for a guest like her, suppose having a centuries plus worth of contacts was kind of handy at times.

She looked around the concourse watching people as they came and went. She had already toured most of the facilities on the asteroid in the 2 days prior of her visit. The small datapad on the counter buzzed, a news feed update; an attempted assassination of Archer , kumo crew claim credit....
"That doesnt seem right", she mused, "Why are your pawns fighting right now, or is Archon sending Jerome a warning, but why?"

I shrugged my shoulders and walked into the store, past the customer who was just about to leave. On his way out, he greeted me kindly, so I greeted him back. I then continued my way into the store to make way for my companion. Inside the store, I turned towards the clerk who was in a corner of the room talking to the other customer.

Customer: But seriously, I'm worried it might be too flashy.

Clerk: Flashy? Nonsense! It's just the right amount of pizzazz. Think of it as the Goldilocks of suits - not too flashy, not too dull, just right.

Customer: I don't know... What if I look like I'm trying too hard?

Clerk: Trying too hard? Sir, in this suit, you'll look like you're not even trying. Plus, it has pockets deep enough for all your secret gadgets.

Customer: Hmm, it does look nice, but I'm not convinced.

Clerk: [to me] Oh, hello there! I'll be with you in just a moment.
[turns back to the customer] Now, where were we? Ah yes, the suit that will make you the talk of the town!

I turned to Kasumi. “Looks like it's going to take a while. Go ahead and look around for the computer... and keep an eye out for any cameras.”

I hadn't spotted any in the store yet, but you never know. Not entirely coincidentally, I positioned myself as if I was waiting to be served next, while at the same time obstructing the clerk's view of his counter.

I wandered inside past my companion, pretending to be looking at guns. There were some terminals scattered around, presumably to view any items not visibly on display in the store, or maybe place orders without going through the human element. What mattered was that they possibly had a connection to the one behind the counter, or whichever system it was connected to... giving me an easier window to access it than something which I would have to visibly reach over for, and which was likely monitored by a camera.

Thinking of those, I used my body's unique properties - the ones that resulted of its modified nature, not the excessive size of female body features - to check for the signature they would leave behind. And sure enough, there were a couple mounted on the ceiling, but their positioning meant that I could just put myself in front of one of the customer terminals and have my big lower half cover it up while I pretended to be looking at things on it... namely, a physical access port which could fit a number of devices, including my own. Technically, it was intended for maintenance purposes, payment or identification devices, but not today. Still, it would hopefully reduce suspicion if my arms were momentarily down there...

And if there was a camera watching from ahead, not that I'd noticed any, the large majority of what it would be seeing was breast. Or the curve that those big funbags created while contained inside of my suit and clothes underneath, anyway. I pulled the hacking tool off my wrist computer while holding both arms below breast level and standing close to the terminal, and plugged it in, having it put in my ID just to keep selling the illusion... while discreetly inserting a worm into the system to gather some information. Maybe, this store was even connected to the wider station network, because they surely leveraged some taxes on any sales made here.

Now I just needed to wait. I could also be the proud owner of the award that these completely excessive curves were actually helpful to doing things quietly once in a while... even if said award existed only in my head. Hopefully I would not need to try plugging this thing into the store guy's terminal or whatever. Doing that unseen would be... a little more difficult.

>>MARS, OLYMPUS VILLAGE<<

Vasil spent a good portion of the trip to Mars devising a way to get back at Willow for tricking him and Maul into thinking she could not handle the Orca. He had a few ideas, but hearing Willow announce that they’d been given clearance for their decent to Mars, he stowed them in the back of his mind and went to the bridge. Besides, pay back required the right moment for maximum impact.

By the time he got to the bridge Willow was flying over Olympus Village on final approach to the starport. The city was at least as large, if not larger, than Capitol on Achenar. Instead of Capitol’s Imperial grandeur, Olympus Village’s vast cityscape of brutal, almost mechanical architecture filled the view with impossibly tall buildings rending the sky rather than simply scraping it.

At the eastern edge of Olympus Village the circular starport with its varied levels looked like industrial clock gears wedged into the side of the machine city. Vasil expected that at any moment a giant clickspring would lift and the city would ratchet around like the sudden jump of a minute hand on an old clock.

“Well, here we are.”

While my companion pretended to examine the guns, the clerk finished up with the customer, who went into a changing room looking quite pleased with his new Maverick suit. The clerk turned to me with a friendly smile.

Clerk: Thank you for waiting! How can I assist you today?

I glanced around, trying to buy some time for my companion.

Me: Oh, just browsing for now. I’m particularly interested in any new suits you might have - you know, the 'interesting stuff'.

Clerk: New arrivals, you say? We did get a shipment in recently. They are top of the line. Very interesting items.

Me: Do you have anything in a more… discreet style?

Clerk: Discreet? Ah, I see. We do have a few suits that might interest you. These items are perfect for those who prefer to keep a low profile. If you'd like to follow me?

The clock was ticking, as it was quite possible the clerk would go somewhere where he would have a better view of my companion. I had to stop him somehow.

Me: That sounds perfect. But could you perhaps show me a few of those suits here on this terminal? I’m quite particular about my choices and would love to see their specs before I try anything on.

The clerk’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm.
Clerk: Of course! Let me show them for you to inspect.

As the clerk turned to switch on the terminal next to us, I glanced over at my companion, who was still busy in the guns area. I needed to keep the clerk engaged and away from that space while my companion hopefully got more detailed information about the incoming and outgoing goods than the normal trading computer showed.

If Helix was manufactured anywhere here, it should be possible to find deliveries of chemicals or other things needed for production. From the protocols of Lab 23 we had a document on the molecular structure of the compound, which came from none other than Prof. Quentin K. Huxley himself, the chief biologist of ABEL.

“Hm …”

I still pretended to be looking at the selection of weapons available, none of which were of course better than the proper ones I had… since the stores would not be able to legally flog military-grade gear any longer, and certainly not openly on display like this.

As my ID info popped up on screen in the corner - with a somewhat outdated picture from before those… certain changes, if mostly showing the face - I also knew I would now have access to the system here. And the cameras, maybe… I held up my wrist computer as if to check a message which I just received, instead using its interface to send a simple power cycle command to them, and then use that time to utilize the terminal in an unintended way, gaining access to the store’s deeper network. Nobody stood near me though, so it’d just look like I was a perfectly legitimate and interested customer… ignoring certain parts of my physique.

Nothing too interesting yet, aside from the fact that this store did in fact have a… less-than-legal side to it, as would be expected this far out from the core of populated space. I still needed a little more time to gain access to the station network and download more info on whatever was going on around here. Namely, any possible references to the Helix and what all of that transport activity out there was about.
23 Aug 2024, 2:30pm
I looked at the terminal showing the latest suit, examining it closely. “Impressive. Could you tell me more about its features?”

The clerk launched into a detailed explanation, and I nodded along, asking questions to keep the conversation going. My companion needed more time, and I couldn’t afford to let the clerk’s attention wander.

“That’s fascinating,” I said. “Do you have anything similar but perhaps with a bit more… versatility? Something that could be used in multiple scenarios?”

The clerk’s eyes sparkled with excitement. “Ah, I see you’re a connoisseur! Let me show you this piece. It’s designed to be adaptable to various situations, whether you’re in a high-stakes environment or just need something reliable for everyday use.”

I leaned in, pretending to scrutinize the displayed suit closely. “Interesting. And what about its shield? Can it withstand getting shot at?”

“Absolutely,” the clerk replied, launching into another detailed description. I kept nodding and asking more questions, each one designed to keep the clerk talking and focused on me.

“Do you have any personal favorites among these?” I asked, hoping to draw out the conversation even further.

The clerk smiled, clearly pleased with the question. “Well, if I had to choose, I’d say this one here. It’s not only discreet but also incredibly energy efficient. Let me show you a demonstration.”

As the clerk began setting up the demonstration on the terminal, I stole another glance at my companion. She was still working, and I desperately hoped she wouldn’t need much more time. Sweat beaded on my forehead as I realized I couldn’t keep this up much longer.
23 Aug 2024, 3:12pm
The station network, once my tool got me in after a couple of minutes, was definitely a lot more telling.

First, the Tritium shipments, about 14,000 tons. Since the standard fusion reactor uses hydrogen as its fuel, that had to mean they were expecting either a lot of megaship or carrier traffic - neither of which were particularly common or frequent around here - or something really big that made the use of a carrier’s FSD look like a drop in an ocean in comparison. And… sure enough, it was expected that the “Herald of Salvation”, a name I wanted to spit and definitely pulled a face at, would arrive some time in the near future. Whatever the ship was… and if its plans hadn’t changed after those leaks, because it probably was one of those ships of the new experimental research division.

Second, there was a lot of Guardian tech getting gathered and scattered all over a number of sites… I vaguely remembered something about the Dawnbreaker using it, unless my memory was totally playing tricks on me, which placed another connection to Azimuth.

“Hm… interesting.”

Part of that was just to sell the impression I was still examining stuff and one of the guns had my interest.

Thirdly - shipments of Thargoid tissues and similar were expected soon too, with references to Helix and that it was to go to a lab… somewhere within the A belt of the system, where surrounding asteroids would likely mask its emissions and keep it hidden from probing sensors.

Perhaps there was a precise location detailed in the data, but we’d have to look for that in it somewhere less controlled, with no time pressure. I discreetly downloaded the relevant folders within the network, wiped all evidence of my activity from it as best as was possible, as well as deleting the activity logs relating to the camera power cycle, then unplugged from the terminal and put my magic stick back on the wrist computer. Hopefully, if that act of hacking was ever discovered, it would be long after we were gone and done. As for being traced back to me… maybe I just wanted Azimuth to know we were on their track.

Following, I walked to my companion, as if to check up.

“I think, I am done here. You find anything, yet?”

"Yeah and we got like, tourist clearance. so we're good as long as we don't stray into Students & Staff only areas of the University"

Standing up, Willow hopped from one foot to the other testing the gravity.

"Huh, so it feels less than one half Earth standard. Like, in that case, I'm going to dress for the part. I guess I can still pull off the student look in case we have to get sneaky"

"It's your show now Maul. Once you get us a lead, we'll decide what we should do next, okay?" asked Willow leaving for her room.

Kasumi Goto“I think, I am done here. You find anything, yet?”

I glanced first at my companion, then at the clerk.

“Despite the truly excellent advice, I still can’t quite make up my mind. Guess I’ll sleep on it and decide tomorrow.”

With that, I politely bid farewell to a visibly disappointed clerk, who nonetheless wished me a pleasant day. Say what you will, but the service here wasn’t half bad. If I compared it to the vendors in my neck of the woods…

We left the shop together. Once I was sure no one was within earshot, I turned to Kasumi.

“So? How did it go… did you find out anything interesting?”

I fervently hoped she had. We had only this one lead on Helix’s origin, and it had dragged us to this backwater system because of the name Thor Biometrics. But the trail was old, and there was a real chance it had gone cold by now.
23 Aug 2024, 5:41pm
"Oh... yes, I did.", I said, the look on my face indicating I had more than just a little bit to be content about. Then I looked around.

"Better, to talk, in private, though. Maybe, back on, the carrier?"

I provided a questioning gaze after that, as though to inquire about the proposal, or if just going to one of our ships here was better. I felt more like just getting off the station before anybody got suspicious, though.
23 Aug 2024, 6:26pm
I narrowed my eyes at my companion, a smirk playing on my lips.

“The carrier? Really? Looks like you’ve stumbled onto something interesting indeed. Alright then, let’s bid this station farewell and get moving. Better safe than sorry.”

I gestured towards the docking bay with a flick of my wrist.

“If you’ve got nothing else to take care of… I’m ready when you are.”

All in all, our stay had dragged on thanks to that shop visit, long enough, I hoped, to seem plausible to any prying eyes. Just two visitors, wandering the station, hitting up the local Pioneer store, which was probably the only one far and wide, and then returned home.
