Introductions

25 Jun 2019, 9:47pm
First time poster and ED player (PC).

I spent 5+ years in EVE Online and don't miss it a wink. Never was a great PvPer, but had fun when I did. The sitting around and waiting was the toughest part. The meta-gaming was tiresome. It still is.

I discovered ED while reading about the first Beagle Point expedition. Found it as fascinating a game as I did EVE Online when I read my first story of a meta-game heist and corporate takeover.

ED appealed to me in so many ways that EVE didn't...

  • PvP is a choice -- not a foregone conclusion. I have yet to play in open. I will NOT begrudge / insult PvPers -- I respect their goals for the game, but not everyone else's goals fit that mold. Sometimes, you just wanna play a space game. I hope Frontier never changes this.
  • The economy is easier on the eyes, and wallet -- EVE Online was a decade-long grind to work your way up, requiring multiple accounts to get enough manpower to earn anything. And it still didn't matter if you screwed up one jump freighter run. ED's simpler economy is awesome -- I'm already moving up into middle tier ships which I'd have had to work a year to get to in EVE.
  • The "world" reminds me of THE EXPANSE -- I'm reading the novels by James A. Corey (book 6 -- Filip is a little shit like Joffrey from Game of Thrones), and I love "what could be" in our own galaxy with humanity's growth and exploration of the stars.
  • Amazing and passionate community -- I've lurked here on Inara for about 2 months, and the site is amazing. Better than anything built with the EVE Online API. Lots of great posts and Reddit community discussions.

Thanks for the time at the mic. When I finally join you in the black (Open play), hope we cross paths. If you blow my shit up -- meh. Lessons learned.

Cheers,
Mos

Hey Mos,

Welcome to Inara and Elite: Dangerous!

Eve is a different kettle of fish, it will become apparent in time that there are things Eve has that Elite doesn't and vice versa.

I like your enthusiasm.

Regarding PvP being optional, in many situations that is also true in open. I hope while lurking you have seen the discussions on being prepared for open and think about joining a Squadron or making some friends that can assist with the steep learning curve. Join the Inara Community on the Discord too, ask questions, we are all willing and able to help.

Be careful out there and Fly Dangerously!

You have a great attitude and I think you will prosper in ED. When you're ready for open I would gladly join you. I used to fly solo a lot, but its only open for me now. To be honest, there's not a lot of difference, but the potential for good and ill is better. o7 Cmdr.

Thx, Renraiku.

Regarding the steep learning curve -- I believe there's none steeper than EVE Online. There used to be a funny graphic floating around the Internet about it...

Frontier's training simulations and the manual (OMG the manual) are invaluable for getting started. Plus, you can do it in a solo environment and focus on building skills.

Hopefully we'll run into each other someday. I'll try and hop onto Discord this weekend.

Mos

Hi Mos, welcome to Inara.

BTW, rather then spamming forum, just EDIT your posts to add more content. (like I just did )

JCRulesHi fellas, I have been away from home for a bit looking after someone however I came back a few times to find I was either banned forever from some factions or blown up or bla bla, fair enough, so what, shit happens. I.can quite easily begin again but this time I want to stay out on the edges and begin there. I hate combat but am willing to learn. When I got going again I have done enough to get a Cobra III and A rate it as much as possible but that's it. I fancy reengineering it, and take it from there??? Interested in comments, many thanks

Welcome back, Commander JCRUles!!

Nah, just follow tutorials like this one, and you will have enough credits to afford any ship in very little time.

When quoting multiple people, separate posts are valid, so as to give the subject the correct amount of attention and respect to the poster.

Yes, that graphic is accurate, however you will notice Elite: Dangerous is not on that list. FDev have only recently included the Codex which includes the Pilots Handbook and Knowledge Base.

After EVE I am sure you will do fine, however the learning curve is still steep just not terrifyingly so like EVE.

Hi all,

Just found this game by chance and have been playing for a few days and love it. Used to play the original Elite back in the day.
Would love to join an active squadron to do missions, exploration, etc. The vast open space can be quite lonely at times
I play on a PC, my timezone is GMT (Iceland) and language English.

Shoot me a message if your squadron needs a new pilot!

Welcome Cmdr 07
I used to play the original Elite too. Many Squadrons here, like my own, have veteran Cmdrs willing to team up and help. You can browse them here and find one to your liking. Fly dangerous, but never without rebuy

Thanks for the reply. Based on the Silverback description it looks like I could fit right in with the group (read: I am not 20 years old anymore)
Are you accepting new pilots?

Hell yes

Greeting Cmdrs!

Well, i have been lurking around Inara and edsm now for about a year, and have seen a great deal of relative content, and awesome tales of exploits and carnage, and while I have been playing on the xbox platform pretty much since it was launched, I too have played the earlier versions on PC, and though my current PC plays elite okay, i do spend much more time on the console , so, anyway, I thought I would say hi to you guys and girls, and if your ever about looking for friends, look me up, friends here are friends for life, just like my friends i found in Tron Legacy, my other gaming passion, until Elite took up the reigns.

Fly however, MajorM3ss signing off!

o7!
