General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

'Oh dear.... I'm soo sorry. I had no idea.'

Silvia felt awful about the joke. She had tried to make light of a crumbling situation and had failed.

'Listen I meant no disrespect and I meant no harm. I was only trying to get you out of your shell. You wouldn't be able to guess it by looking at me but I am dealing with some really awful inner demons.'

Silvia tries to think back on something a friend of hers had once told her. She watches as tear welling up in the woman's eyes the pain bringing out the caring nurturing side of her. She walks over to the woman and reaches out slowly and gently places a hand on her knee.

'Hey new things are hard. Social situations are hard for some. The people in this bar at least most of us, are friendly enough. You can't let the brutes and scary looking ones deter you.'

She sighs and takes a seat on the floor. She moves the hair out of her face to expose the healing wound on the right side of her face.

'Look at me. I was recently in a really bad place and I got really beat up. I am not saying this to make you feel bad. I am simply trying to show that we all have our struggles. Willow was in the same situation as myself and we are both working on ways to find ourselves again. Give her time she will come around. I have been there before trying to gain the attention of the woman I fancy.'

Silvia pulls out a small jewel and rolls it around in her hand. It's not exactly round but it's not fully flat. It's more of a semi circle in nature. The flat side is perfectly smooth and ones finger can glide easily over the surface no matter the pressure or speed. She hands it over to Kira and smiles.

'Here take this. It's a worry stone made from a black opal. I have found that in times of stress it has helped me to have something soft and smooth to run my thumb on. I meant not to make you uncomfortable. I am sorry for any distress I may have caused. If you feel like it I will be over at the stage assisting Creamy with musical numbers as needed. Please feel free to come socialize and visit for a while. Maybe we can sway you into sticking around.'

Silvia smiles warmly and and stands. She makes her way gracefully over to the stage.

"You see? He's not an Imperial, how about that? Someone that is a total arse, but doesn't happen to be from my neck of the woods. Unfathamabel what?"

Silvia Sharpe
'If sir Goodness here is the same welp I had heard soo much about he could certainly help you relax a bit. He has a way with the ladies that makes you feel comfortable.'

"Well now I.. .. " started Creamy playing along, and suddenly there was an exodus of pretty women. He watched them move away as if had had just told them he had rampant herpes, and was willing to share. Eventually, Silvia came back to the stage.

Turning a quizzical face to her, Creamy asked "What was your family name again? Buzz-Kill? Contraceptive perhaps?"

Patting her on the shoulder Creamy shook his head. "You're not the only one, there seems to be a lot of 'saying the wrong thing' going around. Must be something in the air tonight"

Turning a quizzical face to her, Creamy asked "What was your family name again? Buzz-Kill? Contraceptive perhaps?"

Silvia smiles at the lighthearted joke.

'What? I was only trying to help.'

Trying not to focus on the mistakes she had made during the interaction she looks around.

'Hmm what shall we put on now?'

'Listen I meant no disrespect and I meant no harm. I was only trying to get you out of your shell. You wouldn't be able to guess it by looking at me but I am dealing with some really awful inner demons.'

"The shell is there for a reason.", I replied, pulling up my nose. My eyes felt wet.

"I need it to exist. If I didn't have it, I'd... I'd..." I needed to stop talking, and think. "Just... give me a moment."

I ran my right hand across the smooth side of the stone slowly, and it was oddly relaxing for some reason, as said. Somewhere in my mind, I'd caught Willow waving at me and saying something with 'Hi' in it before leaving, alleviating some of the doubts I was having. With that in mind, I pulled up station registers on my wrist computer, and started looking. I quickly found an entry matching by visual appearance. While this wasn't the way I preferred, it seemed like a better solution in the moment, so I began writing up a message.

'Hi, it's ...'

I shook my head and started over, deciding to start off with something other than my name. Or, at least, not mention it right away. I went through the process of deleting and starting over, or correcting bits a few times, before I felt happy with the result.

'Hey, it's 'me'. You know, that other woman with black hair from the bar. God, I sound weird. Do I? Anyway. I figured I'd just send this over in case I end up leaving the station tomorrow.

Really just want to say I'm sorry about the way I responded when you first approached a few days ago, but I was a bit on edge from that weird guy bothering me. Well, and for shouting at your team today. Or two of them, anyway. I just get really annoyed and defensive when accused of stuff that isn't true, and by people who don't know me. Hope you're not too mad at me for it.

Oh, and name's Kira, by the way.'

I hit the send button, and only kept a part of my mind reserved to considering what the response might be. If I received one at all. Then I stood up and joined Silvia on the stage.
03 May 2023, 9:57pm
Silvia watches as the blackhaired belle walks to the stage.

'Oh so you have decided to join us. Allow me to start over. Name's Silvia. I'm a part time barkeep here though I'm not on shift this round.'
03 May 2023, 10:11pm
I shrugged.

“Don’t know if you heard me say it, but I just needed to think for a few minutes. Besides, I noticed Willow wave to me just then, so I guess I maybe didn’t scare her off like I thought. Anyway …”

I handed the stone back.

“I don’t think it’s right of me to keep this. It is nice, though. Also, just to have said it, empathy gets to me more than a joke sometimes. I’ve been through a few things too, which this is a reminder of.”

I pointed to the scar on my face - length-wise across the right cheek - while glad that the suit hid the one across my neck, then quickly changed the subject.

“Anyhow, nice to, well, properly ‘meet’, and not while everyone’s a bit cranky. It was getting a little tiring anyway.”

I decided to not mention the message that I sent before getting off the couch.

“So, what’s on the menu?”
03 May 2023, 10:20pm
"Sorry to say ladies, I need to bow out. All this takes a lot of beauty sleep to maintain don'cha know?" said Creamy standing up and stretching.

"I say Silvia, cracking job on the drums during the request. Top draw, I really was impressed. And it was a pleasure to make your acquaintance Kira, I wish you well with your inquiries"

Walking between the women, Creamy headed for the exit and his ship. He was going to sleep on one of the planets in system, because he liked the feel of real gravity when he slept.

"Hope to see you both tomorrow. Good night"

"Okay, bye.", I threw after the man as he left the bar, in a genuine tone, then looked to Silvia. "Guess that just leaves us. Think I'll keep my hands off the piano though. I don't want to annoy whoever's still around."

'Good night Sir Goodness. I will be seeing you around.'

Silvia says a parting goodbye. She turns to Kira and smiles.

'That's quite alright dear. Wouldn't want to cause any undo embarrassment if we can avoid it.'

She pauses and thinks for a moment. She looks at the empty bar top and turns back to Kira.

'So would ya fancy a drink? I can make a mean cocktail.'
04 May 2023, 5:46am
“Well, about that part…”, I started, hesitating a little. “Drinks aren’t really my stuff. At least, the kind that makes you lose your balance.”

I looked around.

“And if you want to have me be more than a jumbling mess, it’s probably not a good idea, anyway. I like, won’t be used to anything. Wouldn’t mind some water or juice though.”

The little tool on my wrist gave off a silent buzz, indicating a new message, but I decided to ignore it for now - though I could figure who it was from already.

'I can make a non alcoholic drink if you'd like. As a bartender I have to be capable of mixing all manor of drinks.'

Silvia takes Kira by the hand and leads her to the bar top. She pulls out a seat and gestures for Kira to sit. Walking around the bar Silvia grabs a tall glass and a mixing cup. She looks strong the bar and grabs 2 strawberries, 2 raspberries, 1 blackberry, 3 mint leaves, 3/4 ounce simple syrup, 1 ounce Seedlip Grove, 1 ounce Seedlip Garden, 1 ounce brewed hibiscus tea, 3/4 ounce lemon juice, freshly squeezed, 1 1/2 ounces ginger beer, Garnish: mint sprig and powdered sugar.

In a shaker, she muddles the fruit and mint leaves with simple syrup. She then adds the remaining ingredients to the shaker and fills it with ice. She shakes and strains the mix into a highball glass filled with fresh pebble ice. Silvia tops it off with ginger beer and garnished it with the mint sprig and powdered sugar.

She places the drink in front of Kira. Her tone is warm and welcoming.

'Here you go ma'am. This will be a right bit better than a plain juice. This is called a Berry Smash. It is fully non alcoholic and has a wonderfully pleasant taste.'

Silvia glances down at the glow emitting from Kira's wrist and catches a name. She smiles when she recognizes the name.

'She will come around eventually. Just give them some time. The station is running us all ragged. Longer hours and less time of. They are pushing the boundaries on what is humane.'

'She will come around eventually. Just give them some time. The station is running us all ragged. Longer hours and less time of. They are pushing the boundaries on what is humane.'

“I haven’t looked at it yet. No idea what’s in the message. That said… I’m probably going to apologize to her team about what I said. Eventually. Kinda think this whole deal of station management screwing their own people over so they can keep pilots who already earn more money than they’ll ever need around is just…”

I made a sound showing my displeasure at the subject, then carefully sipped at the mixture that had been placed in front of me.

“That is… strong. Good, but I don’t usually have this many different flavors in one thing. Keep it straight and simple most of the time. Or maybe I’m just a bit lazy about my food and stuff.”

I placed it back down gently.

“Maybe adding some water to it would be nice. I prefer my fruit juice to be a bit more on the fluid side. But not enough that it washes out the taste. Anyway, you mentioned someone named Venus back there?”

I pointed at the stage.
04 May 2023, 6:56am
Silvia takes the critique with a grain of salt and obliges the request. She pours the drink mix into a clean shaker and adds a dash more fluid before pouring the drink again.

At the mention of Venus, Silvia goes rigid. Her warm expression is replaced by that of sorrow. Her warm cheerful tone turns a bit cold.

'She was amazing. The most beautiful woman I had ever met. We fell in love the moment we met..... *sigh*... she was alot like you when we first met. Shy, socially awkward, afraid to step out of her comfort zone......' Silvia closes her eyes thinking back to when she and Venus had first met. 'We ended up getting married a few years after we met... things were great until one day...... I was ambushed and abducted on my way back from a long expedition into the black.'

Silvia leans against the bar watching carefully where she placed her hands. She looks to Kira years welling in her eyes as she continues.

'You ever watch the love of your life die? Not just physically but mentally too? The woman that came for me was not the same woman I had fallen in love with.'

Silvia stops talking and just sighs. She couldn't keep talking on the subject anymore. The pain with each remembrance of the incident breaking her more each time. The tears in her eyes fall down her cheeks as she remembers the light leaving her lovers eyes.
04 May 2023, 7:04am
I listened carefully to the brief telling, and kept my tone accordingly soft when I replied to it.

“I know what it’s like, losing the one person that means everything in your life. More than I’d care to admit…”

My memories, what little remained of them, wandered for a few seconds, then I looked back at the drink. I tried it again, and it would be a preferable subject too.

“Much better. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with the base, mind you. Just my own preference. Really not a fan of thick stuff that feels like it’ll get stuck in your mouth or something.”

I suddenly felt a yawn come out of my mouth.

“Sorry. It’s getting a bit late. Maybe I should - “

I didn’t get to finish my sentence, at hand of a sudden headache coming up.
04 May 2023, 7:56am
The pain faded as quickly as it came, and I removed my hand from my head, also realizing that my previous response felt half-hearted, though meant genuinely.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to make you relive that. I just… well… I know how it feels. That’s all I can say. Or want to, really. So let’s not talk about it, okay?”

I finished the drink and began to contemplate heading back to my ship, really feeling how tired I was now.
