General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

"Well... we can... just wait for a little bit more. Maybe you have something else to chat about, that is appropriate for here?"

I gestured at the bar with my right arm.

"But if nobody shows up too soon, we can go somewhere you would prefer. I can, always, come back around myself later. If you have nowhere else to drag me after discussing the... important things."

I picked up my juice glass and sipped away at it again. Already, it was dreadfully close to empty.
25 Apr 2024, 7:50pm
Slowly and cautiously I enter the bar dust covering my once clean flight suit. I watch each step I take with extreme concentration. I grab a seat near the door slowly easing myself onto the stool.

"Could I get something to drink please?" I ask the person behind the bar politely.

I pull out my data pad and pull up schematics for a ship of very particular interest to me which docked in one of the long term storage hangars onboard cities Gateway. From a glance it would just appear to be a passenger transport anaconda. It is unless you go snooping around inside of it.

After a brief scroll I set the tablet down as the bartender hands me a sweet drink. I let out a sigh mixed with a groan and place my hand onto my left arm. A puzzled look washes across my face as I stare at the wall.

(previous)

"Well, then let’s start by getting ourselves a new drink, shall we? Ain’t no use spouting off with a parched throat. How about another glass of crimson-fruit juice for you?"

I downed the rest of my own drink and waved for the waitress.

Then I nodded my head in the direction of the bar. "Someone you know?"
25 Apr 2024, 8:19pm
“I think… I’d prefer orange juice, for this second one.”

And I already had my eyes on the new arrival. Red-ish hair wasn’t familiar to me, but something about her features… I decided to take a chance and waved at her, trying to look friendly. At least, with the holo-disguise up, only the skin being such a white color would be odd.

"Ma'am, it would appear someone is trying to grab your attention" the bar attendant says drawing me back in from the other realm of reality I was existing in.

I turn to look at the person mentioned only to be met with a ghost of a skin colored Kira. Looking at her it is immediately apparent to me that something isn't quite right either with my eyes or Kira is hiding something. I take another sip of my drink and chalk the fuzzy outline of her up to a lack of sleep mixed with alcohol.

I lift my hand slightly and let a small wave go. Figuring it best to be friendly I stand only for my legs to tell me otherwise. I place both hands on the bar and brace myself against it as I stand shakily. Shaking off a feeling of vertigo mixed with exhaustion I steady myself and proceed slowly more cautiously as I ensure each placement of my feet is solid.

My knees buckle a few times along the brief but lengthy walk to the table. Getting closer to the two I notice Kira still seems a bit "fuzzy". I blink rapidly.. well I think I'm blinking rapidly, from the outside observer one eye is slightly out of sync with the other and my eye lids stay closed longer than they should. Dark circles can be seen around my eyes only slightly masked with makeup.

"You're fuzzy." They words fall out of my mouth before I have a chance to stop them. I sort of plop down into a chair and rest my head on my hand, looking at Kira and the woman I don't recall ever having met.

"You're new." I say pointing a lazy finger at the blonde haired chick.

"New girlfriend Kas?" I say my speech less than alert.

I exchanged a look with my newer companion, confused, then looked back.

"Oh, so I... do know you. But... I cannot remember your name, sorry. There was... lost memories."

That was all I knew to say, immediately... before my brain latched on to some of the other stuff that was said.

"And I am fuzzy?" I then shook my head lightly.

"But not a girlfriend, no. Maybe not even a friend... yet. More like ..." I let my gaze wander, thinking. "Partners in a common endeavor. I think is the right word. I almost shot her on our first meeting, because of... a misunderstanding."
25 Apr 2024, 9:31pm
I turn lazily and sluggishly to look at Kira. The majority of what she said just going in one ear and out the other. A few stray words catch and I roll with what my deprived brain comprehends.

"Yes I know you. Memory loss huh? Been there done that. Not fun...." there is a sigh as my eyes slam shut and my breath draws out as my body exhibits a fit of shut down. I let out a sharp breath and I snap awake again.

"Soo fuzzy. Like I mean you don't look real. I'm probably just tired. Your skin is soo pale. You look like a ghost."

A brief pause and another unsyncronized blink as my brain fragments and rearranges the information Kira has told me.

"She almost shot you? Kas you gotta be careful you could die... well it appears you did die. You look like you got sucked out into space. I should know I've done it." I grasp my cup clumsily and bring it to my lips and take a sip.

"Mm that's good for space juice."

"Melli would... huh where is melli?" I say having forgot she was back home with Venus.
25 Apr 2024, 9:36pm
“It… it is real. The skin. Details are… complicated. But it has to do with… the memory loss.”

Whoever this woman exactly was, my memories totally not helping me along, she looked ready to fall over and sleep right here. Maybe even while standing, not accounting for the very low gravity.

“And I almost shot her… not the other way around. She can explain it… if interested.”

“But could you tell me your name, please? And what… who is ‘Melli’?”
25 Apr 2024, 9:38pm
"She took such a fancy to me, she just couldn't pull the trigger. And right now, she's probably kicking herself thinking it was a once-in-a-lifetime shot... gone to waste." I grinned broadly, my eyes sparkling with amusement.

"The name's Haraldsen. Don't usually haunt these parts. And who do I have the pleasure of meeting?"
25 Apr 2024, 9:45pm
"Huh? What?" I ask as I look back at Kira and Haraldsen.

Something in my head gives me a little jolt and a tingling feeling runs down the back of my neck. The same feeling rushes across the inside of my skull over the top of my head.

"My name? You really don't remember me? That's depressing. But fine Sil.....vi..a Du..va.l." I reply, my own name hanging up as I speak almost as if I were attempting to repress it from coming out.

I shake me head lightly and respond to the question about melli.

"Melli. You know the cute little ball of white fluff nearly the same color as your ghostly white skin but like terrifyingly violent. My cute little fox companion?" I look around still not remembering she isn't on the station.
25 Apr 2024, 9:52pm
I shook my head again. And ignored the remark from the other woman sat next to me.

"No. I am... really sorry, but I cannot remember it. The, animal. Maybe, I could remember, if I see it. That helps... more than words, sometimes."

"And Silvia ..." I let the name 'melt' on my tongue momentarily. "I remember. Ina told me about you, when I mentioned remembering, how some people looked. You ..." I looked her over a little. "... were among them. But the hair was... silver, I think? Not red, like it wants to set the room on fire around it. Or something, like that."
25 Apr 2024, 10:25pm
I pull out my data pad fumbling it and dropping it to the floor.

"God dammed worthless butter finger ass." I mutter to myself as I lean over the pick up the tablet from the floor.

Setting it on the table and shaking out the fuzziness of my exhaustion I pull open my photos. I press on the camera tab and scroll through a list of photos of a ships luxurious interior. Body imperial decor strewn about and cabins more luxurious than than that of Gutamaya. I stop and pull up a photo of melli.

"Melli!" I exclaim as I show the photo to the two women.

My arms go limp and the tablet drops to the table impacting the same time my face slams down. Jolting awake from the impact I shake off the exhaustion once again.

"Sorry been awaaaaa..... aaake." My voice hangs up and stumbles over the word as a jolt runs through my body. "Way too long. Hmm I could see how you may not recognize me I did dye my hair brighter than a red giant."

I yawn heavily as grogginess takes hold of me yet again.

"Ina's here? Where is she? Bathroom? Beaating up a raider or 2?" I ask playfully.

I look back over at Haraldsen and smirk.

"I can believe the taking afancy to you thing. You kind of cute..... I shouldn't say that. Venus would kill me."
25 Apr 2024, 10:57pm
"If you have been awake for too long... maybe you should sleep. Or take something to get energy back.", I remarked, and studied the datapad. Or, more accurately, the picture on it.

"It is so fluffy. But you say it is violent?" I looked up at Silvia, then back down. "Hm... I remember... maybe. That the fox slipped between your legs and made you trip?"

"But, Ina is not... here. She is, away. I think, fighting Thargoids, maybe. Or Titans, because, in our infinite wisdom, we have decided... to blow them up."

I had to refrain myself from spitting those words out, and quickly switched off the subject again - it was far from an ideal one for a reunion between two friends.

"I met her... over a month ago. Maybe two... I don't quite remember. She is different, now... you will see how, when you meet her again."

Part of me also didn't tell, because I definitely wanted to leave that surprise intact.

"And is 'Venus' the... blue-hair? I have memories, at least of... rough, appearance, but they never have very positive feelings attached. What did she do?"

I hadn't quite forgotten what I'd been told about the woman, but it didn't seem right to speak badly of someone that appeared close to another person, just because of what another said. As genuine as that information seemed to be - it was still from a third party.
26 Apr 2024, 1:40am
"Can't sleep and can't take anything to stay awake. Has something to do with the whole..." I point to the back of my neck near where the cortical implant is situated, still blissfully unaware that Kira likely had no damn clue who I was or what I was referencing.

I blink haphazardly once more and clap both my hands to my cheeks in an attempt to startle myself awake. Pondering the correct way to phrase what Venus had done or rather tried to do I look at Haraldsen trying gauge who or what they were. I place my right hand on the table tapping my fingers lightly thinking of the answer, finally deciding it best to not sugar coat it.

"Venus... my wife... can be a bit of a loose cannon when it comes to me. She may have tried to either capture or kill you details on that are fuzzy..... not too unlike how you appear fuzzy right now..... I guess it was just before you guys came to steal me away from some donkey headed nitwit who thought it would be a grand idea to try and pawn me off to Azimuth. She assumed you had something to do with it, still does to this day." My eyes close once more and my head nods down startling me back awake.

Mentioning the rescue I remember an item I had stashed away in my flight suit. I unzip a seam on my left side reaching in with my left hand shivering at the touch of my own icy hand. From inside my suit I pull out an ornamental dagger no bigger than 6 inches. The pommel is a black iridescent stone with the handle being made from what would appear to be ebony. Down the middle of the blade is a vein of gold.

"I had this made for you shortly after arriving in colonia." I place the blade on the table in front of Kira, letting a smile form as my eyes start to close from exhaustion once more.
26 Apr 2024, 7:15am
I blew some air into Silvia’s face and gently held up a finger.

“Hey. No falling asleep.”

Part of it was gentle seriousness, the other, teasing… a little bit.

“But Ina told me about that abduction… I think. Or, maybe, I just… remembered, again, since then. But only that it, happened… not a lot of what happened back then.”

The only thing that really still floated around in my mind was a particularly vivid moment of unleashing anger and hatred on a man who was as much human as machine, with an oversized plasma machine gun, before smashing his head in with it. But even then, the name eluded me. I came back down to reality after letting the scene play itself out, in my head.

“Why the abduction, though? And why would… ‘Venus’, think that I had anything to do with it? I would… never want to get a friend abducted. Especially not to Azimuth. Or, whoever… the man that did it was. I still have the memory of killing him… very violently. But not the name. Or full name, at least. Only that something in it started with a D.”

Finishing that barrage of questions, not realizing I was overloading someone’s not quite functional brain - which looked a lot like me on a day where I found everything exhausting, I didn’t sleep well, had a tiring day, or the implant was sapping a lot of energy away during an ‘active’ period of the hive mind… or maybe all four combined - I picked up that dagger and contemplated it.

“I found something like this, but… different. In my personal things. Is it from you, too?”

I put it back down on the table.

“But I’m not… sure, I can take this. It is… too fancy.”

Another, albeit recent memory shot through my head, at seeing what looked more like an ornamental knife than to be used in combat.

“I found this nice gem in my belongings, too. It is …”

And now I couldn’t even remember what colors it had, which really annoyed me. A frown appeared on my face as I searched for the details in vain, internally cursing my short-term memory, but also from coming to the realization of why those memories of ‘Venus’ were not very positive, considering what I’d been told. Yet I decided not to say it, at the moment, at least.
