Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I personally just use a Phantom for most of my long-range exploring. Enough space to fit just about everything you need to last indefinitely, if you’re the kind of guy who does that. Not me, though. I don’t spend too much time around people, but I’d go insane if I spent more than like, a month or so out in nowhere. And living quarters, well, those plant scans paid well enough for a fleet carrier of my own. Mostly convenience to move my ships and stuff, but it’s got a pretty good personal cabin, too.”

I gave Willow access to the hangar and stepped into the elevator.

“Come on. And try not to mind walking the entire pad. That ship has its entrance at the front.”

When we stepped out into the hangar, I made a gesture out at the ship, painted in black with red stripes along the side, as if to present it. The reinforced hull was very clearly visible from the outside, but unlike my other Corvette, this one lacked any caustic marks, never having seen a Thargoid in combat.

“Tada. Or however you say that. Let’s go in.”

I moved forward on the pad, already giving Willow clearance to board.

"You can tell the person that designed the standard pad isn't an engineer right? Architects need to spend some time using the shit they put on blueprints, right?" complained Willow on the walk to the front of the long ship.

At least they would be on the right end of the ship to get into the sensor package, and being a Core Dynamics build, the access for the poor schmucks that had to fix the internal components, they would have plenty of space to work.

Willow set up the software patch and then got down to the insides of the monolithic slab of spaceship.

"Ok, from here it's all you. Like, you'll be doing a simple bypass of the noise filters, and a recalibration, so the hardware doesn't get overwhelmed by the new information it's picking up. Like, this is almost standard on science vessels, but for you average joe-pilot, the set-up is too easy to knock out of whack, and it takes some know how to keep it sharp, you know?"
13 Aug 2023, 3:27pm
"It would've been a lot easier if elevators were always on the side of the ship, like they have in some ports. But I guess they want you to put the leg work in."

I listened to Willow's explanation inside the ship, then opened up the sensor assembly.

"Alright, time to start. You'll probably see a few non-standard things around the ship. And don't mind the hatches you might notice on the roof here and there... those are for pirates trying to steal the ship. Another reason why I insisted on coming along. Wouldn't do to have my helper riddled in bullets. And I wouldn't want that, anyway. Because... uh, nevermind."

Following that particular line of thought felt a little awkward, so I turned my attention back to the sensor assembly, plucking away at it to get to the right components.

"Oh, and this is modified too, but nothing I added myself. Just the usual high-grade stuff offered by engineers. Do also let me know if I pull out the wrong thing.”

"Like, advanced anti-personal emplacements are real common in my line of work, you know? So you go to salvage a dead ship, but you can bet the AP system is on its own battery. So yeah, you could say I'm an expert at spotting and disarming AP systems. It's forgetful assholes that leave those systems armed when they ask the ground crew to fix their shit. They should be fed into a real slow grinder, feet first. Asshole"

Willow could recall far too many memories of the family having close calls with AP systems. She'd also seen what was left of some techs, cut to pieces by auto defenses. Some dick-sucker pilot sits in the bar, boasting about his pay-out, while his ship murderers a work crew trying to carry out the repairs he ordered.

"Yeah, but those guys have all the best kit on their ships right? I mean, if you haven't visited the specialists to get your modals tuned, you're not a fighter pilot right? You can bet a successful pirate knows that too"

Willow talked Kasumi around the bypass and watched her work, making sure everything was done right. A few tests confirmed the ship, and hand scanners were working the way they should.

"Ok, like great. With those electronic eyes, you'll pick up Silvia unless they are making a real effort to hide her. So, like there's one more thing, ok? Like, if this strike goes south. Well, that is, can I take a pic in case, you know? And like, is there anyone you'd like me to contact if your not back in like a week or something?"
13 Aug 2023, 5:17pm
“Hm. I didn’t know. Never went salvaging abandoned ships and the like. Yet, anyway.”

I pulled my right hand out of the assembly abruptly, shaking it from getting zapped through the suit, and backed off, almost bumping my back into Willow.

“Ugh! Damn it! You’d think I would remember to keep my hand away from there after a few times of that happening already.”

I pulled off my hood, exposing my black hair, then turned around to face Willow, who was a lot closer than I thought.

“Uh… hope I didn’t… bump into you.”

My eyes moved toward the lower regions of my body, almost indicatively.

“Don’t need that hood in here. I’d ask if the sensor stuff looks right, but I can already see that on your face. Anyway, I always make sure that the system… the defense system, knows who is supposed to be working on the ship. Hard to forget about when you send the request to a maintenance team from onboard, and the clearance to get on is automatically sent with it. Or if it’s not, the system reminds me of it. Much as I’d like to not rely on external repair workers, there’s no real way I can keep everything in perfect shape all by myself indefinitely.”

I paused, realizing I was getting carried away with somewhat uninteresting information.

“Don’t mind that. I guess I just think too much about what people I don’t know might do, because of… what I am. As for engineer upgrades, I’ve got those a little all over… just with my own additions on top. Good thing I have an automated program that keeps track of it.”

Willow didn’t need to know I had a proper AI onboard, or at least, connected directly to the ship’s computer. Her final questions made me stiffen up somewhat, and turn away again, leaning on the edge of the open machinery cover.

“No. No one.”, I eventually said in a resigned tone, head left hanging down. Only a small part of me hoped she wouldn’t take a picture of me like this, with my body sticking out somewhat. But I also hadn’t yet given my consent or said no, so it was probably a needless concern, especially since she likely wanted one of my face.

"Yeah? I got like, two brothers that won't stay out of my business, a mom that always knows beast, and a dad that thinks I'm still like, 10 or something you know? So it's real annoying, but like, I wouldn't be without them. As long as they are like, light years between us, right?" said Willow with an exhausted smile.

"And hey, you can't help but get close in a maintenance hatch. Like, do you remember Ridge? The fat southern guy with the cyber-eye and arm? I should just like, get him a pa-puce and let him carry me around like a baby when we have to do this kind of work. At least then I'd be pressed into the wall by his guts, and not his moon-like ass you know?" joked Willow trying to lighten the mood.

"So, Meowers gave me this" Willow showed Kasumi the goofy spnap she'd taken "Not exactly what I think of when I picture her in my mind, but what ever. And like, remembering is kind of my thing"

"Salvaging wrecks, I find many people with no ties, no one to take them back too, you know? So I find out what I can, and I remember them. I put them in like, a database, you know, in case someone wants to find their son or whatever. It's like, my book, and I read every page to remember the those that have no one" Willow didn't want to tell her it was her Book of the Dead, that was far too damming for the task ahead of Kasumi.

"So I don't want you to be in there, but like, I'll remember you, and it would help to have a picture to go along with the memories, right?"
13 Aug 2023, 5:54pm
“No… I meant… ugh, forget it. It’d be weird to say that anyway.”

I sighed, and pushed myself off the edge.

“You won’t find anyone. I already know. I… still remember. Nobody else to.”

It was possible I’d misinterpreted Willow’s statement, but that wasn’t particularly on my mind. My brain was telling me to find a corner to sit in somewhere, so I did, and sat there cross-legged, head held downward, not allowing for a good picture to be taken. The question had made some rather unwelcome memories surface again, ones I’d rather be living without, and hadn’t shared with anybody.
13 Aug 2023, 6:17pm
"Hey, there you are. That's like, perfect you right there, you know? Sitting on your own, deep in your head. You remind me so much of me, right? Like, cut from the same cloth or something"

Taking out her device, Willow pointed it at Kasumi.

"So, now I got the real you, can I take the picture? I like a natural image, but I'm not against making one from memory. I have to do that for people too you know?" Both an image for the book, and rebuilding a person's face. Having to keep the coffin closed when someone came to recover their loved one was never a nice thing to advise, but she wasn't going to say that.

"And like, I got six more FDLs to do for Jen now as well, and I'm getting a headache for some reason. Sooo?"
13 Aug 2023, 6:36pm
"I... ugh. Okay, fine. But take two. One like this, another standing."

I didn't change my position, looking at the ground more than whatever camera was pointed at me, then stood up and looked directly at the camera with a - purposely - lightly annoyed look with my mouth slightly open, legs slightly apart with both hands on my hips. I wasn't actually annoyed, but I wanted to put on a slight pose to make it look as if I was at being snapped.

"If you want a memorabilia with hood, I guess we can do that too. But I'm not planning to die over there."

If a picture was taken with my hood on, I planned to put a neutral, slightly mischievous look on instead, with my head titled down and eyes up slightly, to meet the camera. I'd pushed the dark thoughts in my mind aside slightly for this, though I could still feel them, deep inside. But I also knew this wasn't the time or place to tell Willow about a long-lost sister, I felt, or to bother her with my bitching about my otherwise not-very-great family.
13 Aug 2023, 6:49pm
"Wow, like, look at you going fashion model on me"

Willow put on a voice and started playing with the camera after taking the pictures Kasumi suggested.

"Ok, now show the lens some love. Oh, not that much, so, you think the lens is kind of hot, but you're playing it cool. That's the stuff. Feed me, feed me. And that's a wrap"

"So thanks for that you know. And like, I'll see you when you get back. I'm going to get those FDLs done, and then get some rest. Good luck out there"
13 Aug 2023, 8:40pm
“Yeah yeah, I get it. I look good when I decide to show myself. But this was an exception, so no photo shoots in the future.”

I turned to the sensor assembly and put the cover back on, making sure that it was solidly in place and wouldn’t budge, then looked back to Willow.

“Well, that’s that. Anyway, guess I’ll see you around later, then. Have fun working on those other ships.”

‘And try not to enjoy my pictures too much’, I added in thoughts, not thinking I had particularly posed too much. Being photogenic was certainly not something that I had in my DNA too much.

Watching Willow walk off, I waited until the ship’s internal sensors reported her signal being off it, before speaking to EDI.

“EDI? If a work crew shows up here, let them know that they’re in the right place. Not enough of a mechanic to know whatever the hell they’re gonna do but apparently it’s going to help.”

“Of course, Kira. But I require a name.”, the AI replied.

“Oh, right. Uh…” I flicked through contacts on my wrist computer until I found her. “Ah. There we go.”

I sent the details to the ship computer, then walked off, and returned to my Phantom, which I had arrived here with, and replied to Meowers’ message.

Just got done working with Willow. I’ll definitely let you know when it’s all ready. Or I guess our Imperial ‘friend’ will. And before I forget to mention it, apparently that ‘contact of hers’ turned out to not be a fluke, but what they bring will probably only be good as a distraction.

Anyway, Thargoids permitting, I’ll go through the data I got now, then send what I find to both you and blue-hair. Or we can discuss it in the bar once I’ve reviewed it - your call.

As if on cue, I felt another strong surge of pain in my head, much stronger than the previous ones, followed by a short bout of clarity in the information from the hive. They were looking… for me, with a very clear intent to force me out if required. And close. Too close. I had to avoid them showing up near the station.

“Flight control, hangar 18 requesting immediate departure clearance, over.”

“Understood. Stand by.” A brief pause followed as the flight controller checked activity levels. “Corridor is clear. Proceed with takeoff immediately. Flight control out.”

I wasted no time in getting the ship topside, and observed a heavy transport that had just passed through land, giving me the aforementioned clear window to leave. And I did, hitting the boost as soon as I cleared the mail slot, being sure that no one else was in my path. I didn’t want to hit anyone going nearly six-hundred meters per second, especially not if my intent was to keep trouble away from the place.
14 Aug 2023, 12:08am
With the ship deguasssing and sensor upgrades we'll underway and nearing completion I take a look at my datapad seeing a new message from Kasumi. In my the rush I missed the notification.

I really didn’t expect any of your Imperial contacts to really care, to be honest. I’ve seen enough of how they work, so uptight about ‘decadence’, ‘the Emperor’ and generally coming across as a bit of a snob. They’d throw you under the bus for accidentally dripping sauce on a white blanket.

At least not all of them are like that, but too many are. And where you’re concerned, you’re willing to prove you’re different, and I’m willing to leave you that chance, but don’t expect more. The main reason I’m doing this is for Silvia. Without her, I’d probably be dead. Again.

Probably going to get around to working on my ship soon. Once those two are done talking, anyway. If the Thargoids allow it, I’ll look into the data. But I’ve been having some annoying headaches, and they always happen when those idiots are up to something.

Come to think of it, most of humanity would throw you under the bus if they made an extra penny for it. Isn’t this such a great world we live in?

Oh, and again, I’m not planning to involve the Thargoids now. What I am trying to do is get them to not target everyone indiscriminately if they get attracted to a firefight around a capital ship. Which they probably will.

At this point there was no real point in replying to the message. We would be able to discuss things further once we were going over the plan in detail. Aventis had informed me that we would have a team of 20 commandos to assist with the clearing of Diaz's carrier.

This many people would not be good to keep in the bar as it would likely make many guests uncomfortable especially with many of them wearing combat suits. I had Willow only worry about the personal scanners for the Anaconda and the personnel going to be onboard the carrier. I helped her where I could remembering much of what she had showed me previously.

After everyone had their scanners reprogrammed and upgraded with Willow's program I stepped away from the group and reserved a conference room at the Chateau Dans Le Ciel. I made sure to inform them of the nature of business and requested discretion. Aventus and I gathered the troops and distributed credits for leisure.

'OK you all know the deal no drinking and keep yourselves out of trouble. We need every single one of you in order for this to be a success. Enjoy your time and keep an eye on your data pads. We will send out an alert for the meeting. Enjoy yourselves and make sure to get all arrangements in order. Treat this just like any other deployment.'

I finish speaking and turn to Aventus. I hug him and thank him for his support. Everyone departs the docks and the troops break off into smaller groups and proceed to various different locations around Citi Gateway.

The time for action was approaching soon and there was still much to do but until Kasumi got the data pulled from that file we were stuck waiting. That was the last piece we needed for this plan to take effect. I proceeded to the Chateau Dans Le Ciel and requested a room for an extended stay.
14 Aug 2023, 12:26pm
Heading back to my camp. Thank you for sharing all the things you told me, hope my company was somewhat helpful to you, or at least not annoying. Send me a message once you need me for the next stage of our plan.

Once at the station, I’d started to look through the recent messages between me and Meowers, thinking I’d forgotten about something. Reading the second-last one, I was reminded of what had slipped my attention, thanks to several hours of inactivity between it getting sent and me reading through it, on top of my interaction with Willow. So I decided to say that now, waiting as I was.

Hey.

So, about that second-to-last message… I don’t think I really answered it properly. So I’m going to now.

I think, or maybe just feel like, I should be the one thanking people. It seems like, lately, every time there’s something wrong I find a person that’s there to just listen. Or bash me on the head to knock my brain back into the right position. And from those I least expect it from, too.

And to think I came into that bar once just because I didn’t know what to do with myself. Anyway, we can talk about this more later. Currently waiting in port for things to kick off.

I sent the message off and resumed waiting, either until boredom drove me off my ship, or I received a message asking me to meet up.
14 Aug 2023, 8:42pm
*receives, opens and reads Venus’ message*

I have a large conference room reserved for us at the Chateau Dans Le Ciel we can meet here tell the front desk you are a member of Duvals party. They will direct you to the room. I will refrain from contacting any of the team until we have a game plan in place.

-Venus

‘A conference room? I’d better not have to talk in front of a bunch of people.’, I thought to myself. ‘And whoever came up with the name of that place is really annoying my inner grammar nerd.’

I stood up from the pilot’s chair and headed to my personal cabin, dropping off my suit there. I had no real intention to wear it into the station today, and the place sounded like it would give me extra bad looks for showing up in one.

I did still keep my pistol and personal shield, if just to cover eventualities, keeping the latter and its power supply in pouches on my belt. Then, I left my ship, and headed over to what appeared to be some kind of hotel.
14 Aug 2023, 11:35pm
With that whole thing finally starting, I decided to, figuratively speaking, keep my foot on the pedal a little firmer, even used several FSD injections that I kept for an occasion like this one, boosting Marshmallow's rather humble jump range.

Landing gear touched the pad, docking clamps engaged and I got up from the seat in haste, grabbing my pistol and personal shields. It wasn't the showdown time yet, so, leaving the armoured suit and the rifle in the cockpit, I hoped I'd get a moment to grab them. Sent a message to Kasumi already on my way to the airlock.

"Just arrived. Point me to the right place where do you want to see me."
