Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“That thing in my head might still mess with it somehow, considering that all the signals basically have to go through it to get to my spine. And, uh, my brain isn’t exactly standard, so it might not work right on the first try from that alone.”

I shifted my back slightly to relieve a bit of tension in the lower spine, and straighten my seated position slightly.

“If it doesn’t, which it probably won’t, I can just feed it bio scans of my body anyway, and hope that convinces it to work. I’d rather not have to get creative with firmware limitations and all that stuff.”

Jørn The Barbarian"I tell you this, so you listen..."

Jim absorbed everything Jørn said and replied only with the occasional nod to let Jørn know he understood and would pass the word on to Willow.

The Swede seemed reasonable enough in spite of the problems he said Willow was causing him, and that was the problem. It was not the belligerent, vengeful leader that was dangerous. You could see them coming, usually goad them into mistakes, and put an end to them. It was the calm, reasonable ones that were dangerous. They never cracked under pressure, always had a plan, and when required, were ruthless in executing those plans.

Once Jørn was gone, Jim looked to his duffel bags and grunted. “Probably gonna need more guns.”

Kasumi Goto“If it doesn’t, which it probably won’t, I can just feed it bio scans of my body anyway, and hope that convinces it to work. I’d rather not have to get creative with firmware limitations and all that stuff.”

"Considering that they claim it works with pathologies, brain or spine damage, or even paralysed people, and they use almost the same tech, if only more rugged and scientific, to help those folks... It might as well connect with your stuff properly. Give it a try. While I'm tinkering with the 'sleep mode'."

I narrowed my eyes, thinking. Unsure how to call my latest 'discoveries' properly.

"I've done some... researches. In what free time I've had. So, there are... various kinds of people who like to experiment with that stuff. In quite curious ways. Sometimes, unsuccessfully. And, after what I've seen, my little adjustments really, really look friggin' innocent. Some groovy bastards even try to 'play' animals. But, bipedal. And speaking in our human languages. And that's, kind of, somewhere in the first half on a shit scale of shit gross stuff."
20 Oct 2023, 9:42pm
“Yeah, you saying that makes me think it’s not really all that bad. I mean, what I have in mind. I’m not gonna spoil it, exactly, but it definitely falls into ‘common human interests’.”

I yawned rather audibly, and stretched.

“I guess it’s getting a bit late for me. Have tried to keep working with standard Earth time, even if I’m spending my days on a planet with fifty hour days. And it’s hella hot over there, like, all the time. Might as well head back and sleep, then have a go at making the thing work. Or sleep and then head back. I don’t miss the high gravity that much.”

It was definitely quite nice to be in a .1G environment on the station, at least for a short time. I let myself go flat on the ground, making sure that my legs didn’t quite reach Meowers, and pushed myself up lightly after turning mag boots off, so that I could float down like a feather. Or, almost, since I still weighed about six kilograms here.
20 Oct 2023, 10:15pm
"Yeah, let's go back to our things... There's still quite a road ahead of me, and I need to record those nightmare patterns... Which don't usually appear when I smash into the bed on my last bits of fuel."

I nodded and stood up, looking at Kasumi almost floating in the air. It made me... even smile a bit. Making a couple of steps toward the airlock, I turned around and waved my hand.

"See ya. Take care. And thank you, this may be right what I needed to take my own head off... things."
20 Oct 2023, 11:42pm
I waved my hand back lazily, also almost smiling, suddenly just feeling like I was completely exhausted. It probably wasn’t too far from the truth, after spending several hours investigating a spire site, not soon after their revelation to the galaxy. So I stayed in place for a few minutes, once I floated back to the ground, until I felt slightly more ready to do at least basic actions again.

The conflict between staying on the station and returning to Duamta was quickly solved in favor of returning - it wouldn’t be that many jumps, and it’d be many times safer, which would definitely help my sleep.

Meowers would definitely be off the ship and out of the hangar bay by now, too, so it was safe for me to take off. Less than a minute later, I disappeared in hyperspace, both eager to just collapse on a bed, and give the VR device its first run.

(melancholically takes a look to the war of two crime gang)

Well pardner, here's a thing there are some things causes and peoples to whom, not worth it to fight for. Love it or not, matters or not. Even less taking a side. So we stay in the dock with our guns stowed. And this remains true, whenever or not some fools ever going to understand it.

The only thing worth to live fight and ldie for, are the good things, what matters to you. But to fight for what's bad? It takes a dimwit. And this also a prologue to a thing gone way too long simply because some peoples way too pig headed to their own good.

And the kids still playing their silly little gang war. Just let em have their time, than clean up what remains. Why to pick sides, if they do the job for you anyways?

Chrome glistened under the dull lights of the pad as the Phantom descended to the dock. Closer inspection showed the ship was not as tidy as its metallic paint and expensive bodywork would suggest. This was a taxi, its owner built it for range to help her zip between star systems without all that faffing around with multiple jump points.

It was perfect for tracking the man she had been tasked with finding, or it would have been if it wasn't for all the damn Goids. Most of the ports she called at had been in resorts, and good-time stations that didn't need a well armored ship to visit, but the ship the guy was flying when he disappeared was an AX fighter. Inara was the last system where his ships' registry had been logged, and Inara was a handful of light years away from a Thargoid maelstrom.

Just because his ship was last seen in Inara, it didn’t mean a man like him was still there. In communications, Inara security informed Lambast that he hadn’t been back on the station after a little 'disturbance of the peace' in the Galactic Bar. Even so, they had agreed to meet Lambast, and help her with the investigation. The security chief straightened his own uniform when he saw the gaunt woman’s pristine whites billowing around her legs as she marched down the Phantoms' boarding ramp with purpose.

“Lady Mercy? Welcome to CItigateway” said the chief, glancing at the well-worn paint, unmistakable burns caused by Thargoid weapons, and the holes eaten out of the hull by caustic missiles.
“I’m glad you got here in one piece”

“Thank you” Said Lambast primly. “It was mostly luck that allowed me to dock. I made an error just this side of critical, bringing a ship that flimsy this close to a Strom. Would you be so kind as to ask a ground crew to attend to it while we discuss my missing neighbor, if you don’t mind?”

“Yeah” he answered with a shallow bow in deference to the woman's imperial rank. “Let's go to my office, and I’ll show you everything we’ve got on Cre.. Lord Goodness”

Battle scarred and patched together Memento Mori enters the ship entrance. The moment the ship enters the oxygenated environment small fires break out across her hull. I hadn't given the ship techs nearly enough time back on Amenta to fully patch the ship up. There was good reason for that though. After our long needed rest Venus told me about the missing Imperial, Sir Creamy Goodness III. So I decided to make my way to Citi to look for some answers. Someone was bound to have information, if they did they'd likely be frequenting the Galactic

'Citi Gateway please dispatch a group crew to pad 26. I have had some small exterior fires break out.'

'Certainly Commander, ground crew on standby.'

I gently ease the ship onto the landing pad and with a very prominent and heavy clanging and banging the magnetic locks secure the ship. I stand from my seat and make my way to the cockpit exit pausing briefly. Instinctively my head turns to look for Melli only to remember Venus and I thought it best for me to travel alone. Venus had said "it would be much easier for you to remain a face in the crowd without Melli around." I had also colored my hair from the typical silver to a brilliant red.

Stepping off the ship I take a long look at Memento Mori, her name barely visible now due in part to the severely worn paint. Scorch marks and acid burns cover portions of the hull.

"Damn this ship has been through hell. It'll take months to complete the hull repairs."one of the ground crew says to one of the others.

'Oh, don't worry about the hull just keep her from bursting into flames again.' I say as I step out of the hangar and head off towards the Galactic.

If anything maybe some familiar faces would be around.

A lone Krait MKII enters the station, numerous impact spots and corrosive burn marks telling of its current - or, at least for the moment, primary - vocation as an anti-Thargoid defense vessel. Something that both it and its pilot needed a break from, for the day.

Once landed, I changed from the Maverick suit that was my usual attire during flight - if only for the reason that it provided the most utility and retained moderate protection - into something more casual, then came out of the ship. I looked over the damage for a moment, from the back, both hands on the hips as fists.

"Yep, that's going to take a while to fix."

I turned back toward the hangar's exit point. Already knew where I wanted to go, especially after a recent adventure near Titan Taranis, that I still tried to figure out for why exactly I'd committed to it.

'One thing at a time, Jana. You're here to take a moment off, so just do that.', I thought to myself, and cleared my head of most of those intrusive thoughts as I walked out of the docking bay.

'Big ugly ship for a pretty little girl Descartes, try not to destroy the station on your way in.'

"Stick your butt out and I'll land on that."

The joke was old and tired. Just how I felt. But the docking controller was probably right. Landing a T9 was like flying a brick, it would even bump into things on auto-dock. Even so, I found the ship very appealing in a brutal kind of way.

Three months chasing the best trade routes 744 tonnes at a time in a battered old hauler. There's not much fun and not much profit, but time enough to go crazy. Trading has become a thankless game. As soon as you identify a profitable route, plot a course and fly to the first pickup there's half a dozen fleet carriers already there before you.

Time for a new direction, a new adventure, there must be somebody around looking for a new partner. First stop check in sell cargo, book repairs. Power shower. Get dressed. Wander around station. Maybe the bar. Loose flight suit, headscarf wrapped over my mouth so I can vent the stale air of my ship and get used to the slightly better atmosphere in the station.

"There."

I held a hand out as if presenting my ship... but it wasn't really that remarkable. A Krait Phantom in a midnight black paintjob, and the only other thing really visible on it being reinforced armor panels - so it wasn't made out of figurative paper when shot at. Nothing special at all, but I liked it. Enough to do most of my activities which didn't require something specialized in it. I looked at my - now - guest, rather than just sudden conversation partner after that gesture.

"I will... need something. An... what is it... ID, to let you in the ship."

"A Phantom! Nice choice, I like these boxes. Quite independent, with a good jump range," I nodded approvingly. "Improved armour. And my personal favourite - the colour. This thing could almost have come from my own hangar," I grinned.

Then I turned my gaze to my host. "What do you mean by 'ID'? You already have my name." I shrugged my shoulders.
22 Mar 2024, 3:47pm
"I thought... it would just be impolite to ..."

I sighed, shaking my head.

"Whatever ...", I muttered, and got the pilot's ID which the ship's computer would recognize, providing it via my wrist device. Also with a discreet pointer to EDI to remain quiet and not reveal herself as an AI. Couldn't trust people to not rat it out to the paranoid authorities which would exterminate them based on the pure fear that one could turn rogue. Which this one was not about to.

"We can go in now."

I thought about lowering the back entrance ladder for a moment, but decided going in through the front would make for a better impression.

"I do like this ship.", I said, while beginning to walk over there. "Most things it cannot fight, you can run from without getting caught. But it can still put up a good fight if it needs to."

I gazed up at the lower weapon mounts near the cockpit. Those two held burst lasers for this one, with plasma accelerators in the ones up top.

It was only in the airlock that it occurred to me I'd gotten myself into a bit of a predicament. I could maybe explain the oddly-sized furniture by saying I just liked to have too much space in it, and that I just liked pillows a lot... but not the way the latter of those was arranged on the bed. Or the 'enhanced' pilot's seat, while I intended to keep things to the cockpit for now - nothing sensitive to be discovered there. I stepped out of the airlock into the main body of the ship and turned back around to my guest, holding a hand up.

"Please... don't be too surprised, but you need to know what I look like. Things here will... make a lot more sense, that way."

I pulled my hood off first, fully revealing the eyes with their vibrant blue, crystal-like appearance, and making the scar on my right cheek, front to back toward the ear, more visible.

Then, I reached for the spot where the holo projector was attached to my belt and, after a moment of hesitation, turned it off... revealing what kind of a messy body I actually had. And the clothes, while not extremely revealing, or really that tight, didn't make any particular attempts at hiding the overall shape either. Having to show myself like this was... still a little embarrassing, enough for a blush to appear. And I stood there, waiting, not knowing what kind of a reaction to expect.
