Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

Muninn yawned as he stretched in his bunk, banging his head against the concave set in the hull. "Fuck!!"

Swinging his legs over he slipped on his issued boots and ran his fingers through his dark, stragly hair so it didnt come over his face. Picking up his satchel he punched the button for the rear ramp to lower and stepped into the small hangar set below the docks.

Walking up the steps he passed a coffee shop where he purchased a white coffee, with sugar. Making his way through the docks he sipped his coffee as the transport ships came in.

Veering off to pad twenty-one he looked on as the big guy struggled with the landing gear. "Have you even done a full dianogstics?" Muninn took back some more molten liquid.

Stryker had stripped off his shirt. His hulking frame hovered over the removed Landing Strut which laied partially dismantled. He looked over at the teen with the stringy black hair, and up nodded.

"Sure have sport." Was his reply as he detached a pad and tossed it to Muninn with a bit of a spin. "This ship is a right mess, but thats what you get when you pay nothing for it. Don't worry it ain't stolen." He indicated the pad. If Muninn were to look at it, it would indeed verify the Salvaging rights, along with a complete diagnostics.

"I'd have you start on the computer. Some of the circuits have fried." He continued as he hoisted a huge hydronic piston upon his shoulder.

30 Aug 2016, 1:05pm
Muninn glanced at the pad and agreed, complete salvage, doesn't mean it wasn't made into salvage.

Stepping through one of the crew hatches and stuffing an ear piece into the canal, he pulled out the main switch board. Switching on a torch on his shoulder, he started looking over the components.

Tapping the ear piece on he started speaking as he pulled the mother board out. "Oi, muscles, the wires ain't fried. You melted three of the 18 processors keeping this thing flying." Muninn found something jarred in the circuit breaker and yanked it out. "And your power unit seems to have frag in it."

Muninn pulled out a diagnostics keyboard and started tapping. "You're lucky your working memory and the long term hard drive is working." Discretely Muninn brought up the flight logs.

Tapping his ear again, he switched his mic so Stryker couldn't hear. "May? Get yourself down to Pad 21."

Tapping again he listened as Stryker grunted with the landing gear. Tapping away Muninn started flushing the entire system, trying to isolate breaks.
30 Aug 2016, 3:41pm
Stryker tosses the hydrolic piston into a scrap pile with a heavy clang, turns and makes his way back to the ship. He hears Muninn make the quip about the melted processors and the hard drive.

"Didn't even use it Tiger. They were like that when I picked this thing up." He says into the hatch. "Easy enough to bypass and splice in a secondary adjunct processor. Take a look at the pilots interface...." There is a pause. "By the way, clear out the memory. If you find anything of use on it, its yours." He says nonchalantly.

He goes back to the dismantled strut pulling out a spanner and spinning it in his hand before applying it to a stubborn nut.
30 Aug 2016, 4:00pm
Muninn poked his head out of the hatch and turned to look at Stryker. "The processors have been by-passed and the shrapnel has been removed, but I suggest buying replacements. By-passes aren't meant to be long term..."

Muninn looked nervous as he thought about the next bit. "This was a Federal Logistics ship, you sure you want to give the memory to me?"

Before he got an answer he watched as Little Crow made her way across the pad. Hood up and head down. Lifting up his hand telling her to stay until he got an answer.
30 Aug 2016, 4:16pm
Stryker looked away from his work and back into the access port "I plan to replace the memory core, computer, everything that needs to be. I ain't gunna run this thing off shunts. It was just to get the blasted POS here. If it can be fixed, do so." He called back. "If the Feds have half a brain, they would have wiped the thing before retiring it to the graveyard. If you want to hunt for crap on that hard drive, be my guest. It has not value to me."

He turned back to his work, spotting a small hooded figure make its way across pad. He called out to her. "Oi! What'cha be needin?" I paid the docking fees for the next week, so if you don't have reason to be here, piss off."
30 Aug 2016, 4:48pm
Muninn stepped down. "Don't worry about her, she's with me. I called her over, just wanted to be sure." Muninn pointed inside the ship. "You know what to look for."

The woman clicked past, stepping in her heels. Muninn turned to Stryker. "I'm sorry, about that. Um you're rear left thruster is cycling a little low, should be an easy fix?"
30 Aug 2016, 5:44pm
Stryker was miffed, but he hid it behind a cool exterior. He had nothing to hide, but it was the principle of the matter. He instinctively reached out with his right hand and caught himself when the cybernetic claw was a few inches from the woman and retracted it. Thanking his lucky stars he said to her. "What? Were your raised in a barn or something. Its customary to ask permission to board someone's ship. Don't think for a second that I won't call station security and have them forcibly remove and detain you, and I will press charges."

He would turn to face Muninn. "What is it your looking for? I've been patient. I saw that salty old space dog pass you a knife and a fracking grenade. Under the same circumstances I would do the same thing. Hell, for all you know I might try to sell you into slavery or some shit like that. God knows I've been there, but I have been completely open and honest with you. So now its your turn." Stryker folded his beefy arms.
30 Aug 2016, 9:49pm
Muninn ran his fingers through his hair. "Little Crow wasn't raised, but that's to Heathen to explain, or her if you can." Looking back at Little Crow, a look of sadness passed over Muninns face. "Heathen wants us to lift Federal hardware, scrubbing never works fully and people of Little Crows.... Persuasion are very good at extracting what we need."

Muninn reached out, holding the grenade. "And Heathen doesn't think I can protect myself, so he gave me the grenade." Dropping the lump with the pin still in.

Hearing a whistle Muninn nodded and Little Crow stepped out and walked off carrying a tablet. "She's done, we're not trying to do anything funny, just gather intel."

Looking back at the ship Muninn pondered. "Ah yes. The rear left thruster is running low in cycles. Now it's either the circuit breaker or the thruster itself, both easy fixes. Tank 3 of life support is actually doing fuck all, valves are too tight. Aaaaaand the Feds have been too tight on spending to update your AI."
30 Aug 2016, 9:57pm
"You could have just asked." He says simply. "Though I guess most people would tell you to piss off huh?" He strokes his chin on accident with the clawed hand. A small gash seeping some blood. He closes his eyes willing for patience. "I have no need for the federation data. Take it. All I want is the ship. I can't do the fine work with this..." He flexed his claw, "That's why I asked you to help. And I still need it. Tell you what. I'll get to work on shifting the thruster. I can manipulate that, you check out the circuit, and afterwards we can get a bite."
30 Aug 2016, 10:16pm
Muninn watched the blood trickle down Strykers chin. "You could say I don't want to risk Federal Agents on our tail again. Too many close calls. Besides they think it's me doing it and the Little Crow strides in quietly and does it ten seconds flat, feelings get hot."

Nodding, Muninn slowly stepped inside and made his way to the back, pulling out another panel and started isolating the broken part. "Nah this breaker is intact. You got to shift it."

Making his way down the a panel in the floor he slid it aside and looked at the tanks. "Gonna need muscle for the tanks as well. I'll make work on your AI problem."
30 Aug 2016, 10:35pm
Stryker considers Little Crow for a moment. "So, she's one hell of a hacker then?" He tilts his head up and looks at the thruster housing. "Alright, I'll climb up there and start bangin' on it. I'll get that sucker aligned. Though slow cycling could also indicate incomplete burning in the Power Plant. May want to make sure the re-intake manifold is functioning properly. If you could take a look at that too?" He would ask.

Stryker jumped and grabbed a wing then pulled himself up. Disappearing for a moment he reemerged a moment later on the dorsal side of the ship and dropped down onto the main thruster that was affected. He started to examine it and found the offending foil. He pulled out a few tools from his belt and started to adjust it.
30 Aug 2016, 11:19pm
"If it was your power plant you'd be experiencing power shortage across the board, weapons and shields are fine as far as I can tell." Muninn spoke through the ear piece. "And don't stoop Little Crow to be a hacker, she doesn't like it, she prefers code interpreter. Apparently makes her sound more employable."

Sliding into a seat her noticed the mangled flight stick used by the claw. "You may want to invest in the same company Heathen does, at least they make more... Delicate prosthetics." Muninn tapped the dashboard to life, bringing up the AI hub.
31 Aug 2016, 3:56am
"I'm sure it would, but considering the power plant is working at only 50 percent efficiency everything across the board is lacking. Though he thought this kid is a pretty damn good engineer. "And I didn't mean any disrespect, coder it is."

Stryker had managed to realign the exhaust fin while doing so he thought about his decision to opt for a wicked claw of a cybernetic rather then a more normal human like hand. He wasn't sure he was ready to share his reasoning with the teen, but figured Muninn was smart enough to figure it out for himself.  "Sure ya, if you have contact information I might give them a call and see what they can hook me up with." He said in response to Muninn's advice for choice prosthetics.

After finishing his work on the thruster he hopped down. The one tenth G provided a slow decent and easy landing. For a moment he contemplated striking the three point hero landing pose, but decided to not to.
31 Aug 2016, 7:25am
Muninn new the reasoning behind Strykers claw, but in his opinion there were more subtle ways to go about it. "I'll see what I can pull up."

Finishing the update, Muninn stood up and walked to the back and slid a section of wall aside. Inspecting the plant behind he smirked. "You need to replace this fucker, that's not an easy fix mate. Someone managed to punch a hole in one of the cooling cylinders. Surprised you didn't go nuclear coming through the slot."
