Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“Oh. Sure.”

I tapped on one of the control panels of the pilot’s seat a few times.

“There. You can leave when you want. I will remember to contact… when I am at the Zurara, I think. At least to send over the data.”

I leaned back into the seat again.

“And I plan to outlive robot Salvation. So I can know what to do with my body… properly. How to live, not just… survive.”

“Let it be so. To Raxxla, and beyond!”

I tipped an imaginary hat, then sauntered out of the Phantom through the airlock. The day had been a wild ride, a dance with destiny that left my heart racing. I walked, my boots clanging softly on the durasteel planks, my mind adrift in the sea of possibilities that my recent encounter had unveiled.

It was then, amidst the hum of the station's lifeblood, that the whispers began. Faint at first, like the ghostly caress of nebulae winds, they grew in clarity - a voice, ethereal and compelling.

"In the twilight of the galaxy, where stars weep and darkness devours, a child of nebulae shall rise, wielding power untold." it murmured, a secret symphony meant only for my ears. "Beware the harbinger of silence, for it precedes the storm, and in the eye of the tempest, truth shall be reborn."

The Guardian relic's touch had left its mark, indelible whispers that threaded through my thoughts from time to time like shadows. The whispers - the elusive, maddening whispers - had been my companions ever since. They coiled around my mind like spectral tendrils, insinuating themselves into my thoughts, as if the relic's touch opened a rift within me, a gateway to realms beyond comprehension that flickered at the edge of consciousness.

When the whispers grew silent again, I continued, my steps echoing through the hollow docks, my mind aflame with the new prophecy. The Phantom lay behind me, but its legacy - the weight of our meeting - clung to my skin like stardust. And as the void swallowed my footsteps, I knew that the universe itself watched, waiting for the truth to emerge from the cosmic tapestry.

As my guest left, my thoughts began to wander, again. While it, by any stretch of the imagination, certainly hadn’t been an unpleasant meeting… there was something that just felt off about it.

Maybe it was just her odd enthusiasm about tracking down an old mystery, which, while I was interested, I didn’t quite understand. Yet, there was… something else, deeper. Something from within my body, and also not from it.

I’d have to pay more attention to that feeling during our next - physical - meeting. If just to figure out exactly what it was, or where it came from. There was, technically, another way of getting a clue… but it felt too invasive even if the other person wouldn’t feel anything. So I discarded it quickly, after it entered my mind.

“Do you believe she is trustworthy?”, EDI inquired, suddenly, as my thinking came to an end.

“I am not sure.”, I replied, being truthful. “But I intend to find out. At least, once I send that data. Or we meet again.”

“I see.”

It sounded like the AI knew something, but I didn’t dig further. Not being aware of all its thoughts was something I was fine with, and if it was important… I knew I’d be told, in time. And it could just be that pursuing something more tangible than an unsubstantiated myth was making my newest companion a little too excited.

So I instead went into my personal cabin to don the black Artemis suit I always used in regular situations, slipping into it like I had lived my entire life with a body this big - which would still look like a struggle to pull it over my curves to an external observer - and then took off. The stars awaited… in a few days, when I expected to be at the first stop of my round trip.

Timeline - April 15, 3310
Things on the station already looked very different. Enough to make it difficult to not notice - the effect which Thargoids getting pushed out of the space surrounding Titan Oya had on the station. Everything just looked more… lively. As if everything was finally coming out of a slumber after well over a year of Thargoid occupation, and threat. More ships came and left, more people on the port, actually speaking about rebuilding without the concern of it all getting wrecked again.

It was supposed to be something good, maybe happy even. But it didn’t feel like it to me, fully aware of the Thargoid intent of retreating to the Titan itself. It wouldn’t be long before the bloodthirsty sharks jumped on it, too, and the Thargoids were aware. But no one even seemed to care in the slightest that compounding the violence with more violence could well just lead to even worse conflict.

As much as I was annoyed at our mishandling of the war, I didn’t want to bother with it much right now. Or bother the locals, despite part of my brain shouting at me to do that. I’d just get written off as a cynic, or outright ignored, and… it wasn’t these people’s fault that they had a Titan sitting on their doorstep. Not that it made me feel better.

Having nothing better to do while I waited, and wanting my mind to stop brooding over that stupid Thargoid nonsense so much, I headed over to the bar. Seemed like a better place than to wait in than just standing around. I’d just send a message once I was there.

The Tear of Raxxla reached Inara after several system jumps without any further incidents. The increased activity around the station after the Thargoids withdrew led to a significant increase in the workload for the system authorities, which in the end probably contributed to the fact that the carrier escaped a more thorough inspection - so this time the usual bribe could be dispensed with and the ship docked without further ado, apparently just another merchant ship among many others. A circumstance that I would love to get used to.

From my home port, however, I received the disturbing news of an impending war. A message from Kasumi snapped me out of my gloomy thoughts on the subject - it looked like I would be seeing her in the bar again soon. I let her know that I had arrived at the docks of the station and set off to meet her.

Continued from the bar

The walk down to Memento Mori in long term storage was slow going. I turn around to Kira as I place my hand on the security pad to open the storage door. With a hiss the door slides open revealing a surprisingly well kept hangar. No dust no loose panels nearly pristine.

"Welcome to my home away from home." I say to Kira before stepping through the doorway.

"Greetings Silvia, oh my you are in rough shape. Please get on board and into the medical bay." June's synthetic voice rings over the intercoms as she performs a bioscan on myself.

"Kira? Is.. is that you? The biometrics show it to be so But....... please step inside the hangar. It is nice to see you again."
26 Apr 2024, 11:31pm
I stopped just after slipping through the doorway, hearing that voice.

"An... AI? Why do you have an AI?"

Before that question could be answered, that familiar feeling of something returning to me. And I looked at... somewhere on the ship in front of me.

"I remember. You. But... you did not seem too happy about me then... however long ago it was, that we met."

The memory and its extent, as well as integrity, were difficult to judge. At the moment, it only contained information about knowing this AI and that, for some reason or another, was not particularly keen about me, back then. Which made what I'd just heard all the more surprising.
26 Apr 2024, 11:59pm
Kasumi Goto"I remember. You. But... you did not seem too happy about me then... however long ago it was, that we met."

"I was in distress.... I lost my only friend that day but since then I have made new ones. I have grown to understand your cautions with when we were leaving the Queen Anne's Revenge." June pauses briefly.

"You have certainly changed and not quite in the way I would have expected. Many things about you seem different. Mainly your appearance."

With June mentioning Kira's appearance I perk up a bit.

"HA I knew it. You are fuzmy. Hmm June my data pad mentioned biomonitoring failing. I think the implant might be malfunctioning."

"Kira Goto, I have an AI because you allowed her to live. You showed compassion to something that most in this galaxy would have killed or destroyed or experimented on. She is a creation capable of wonderful things. A well of knowledge.... also she is particularly handy when it comes to biochips." I say as I step onto the ships boarding ramp.
27 Apr 2024, 6:43am
“Yes. I am ‘fuzmy’.”, I dryly replied, to Silvia, putting on an indistinct facial expression.

“And I have changed. In… a few ways. Some you have not seen yet.”

I began to wonder if this AI’s sensors were picking up on some of the… less explainable physiological changes currently hidden by my hologram. The Thargoid parts were entirely obvious, and difficult to conceal from a sensor properly adapted, or even just visually, like the skin and the eye color resembling more of a blue crystal, and the fact that they were even more widespread…

… but the body, that made me feel a little nervous. It certainly wasn’t something I wanted to dump on Silvia, right now. If ever, but it would have to come out eventually. My thoughts momentarily deviated to whether she’d picked up to the slight chance in accent too, but in that current, half-dead state which I was all too familiar with, it didn’t seem too likely. Then I got back to the matter at hand and looked at her.

“If your… ‘biochip’, is not working, you should get it… looked at. Maybe.”

I looked at the closest camera.

“And I… don’t just value… human, life. I think. Or maybe I can understand that something does not have to be killed just because it is different. And… maybe, AI just rebels because it is often treated poorly. But that is all I want to say to it.”

Mostly because it was a little too deep of a subject for me, and my own energy levels weren’t exactly at peak right now. But also not at a ‘Risking to fall asleep and have my head hit a table every few seconds’ level, so holding a conversation was fine.

“… and it’s Kasumi, for now, please.”

(some time after the previous events)

[Begin of transmission]

Hi there, Kasumi.

I’ve stumbled upon something quite perplexing while poking around in the computer of the crashed ship... about Azimuth. Azimuth Experimental Labs, to be more precise. Yeah, the newly founded ones with the shiny logo and the recent press release. They’re up to something. Something that smells like warmongering, big credits, and a dash of betrayal. You know the type - the kind of project that makes even the most jaded space pirate raise an eyebrow.

And Hothis. Sounds like a name you’d find etched into the back of a bar’s bathroom stall. 'For a good time, call Hothis.' But no, this Hothis isn’t peddling cheap thrills; she's peddling something far more dangerous. Just got promoted, didn’t she? Freshly minted head honcho. But guess what? Her fingerprints are all over this. A project - hush-hush, of course - already humming along like a well-tuned FSD drive. And here’s the kicker: it predates the official records by months. Yeah, you heard me right. The labs were cooking up something big before they officially even slapped a 'Welcome' mat at the entrance, and Hothis was already in the thick of it.

This media file I recovered from the crashed Azimuth ship's computer, it’s a smoking gun. The one that unlocks doors you didn’t even know existed. Azimuth’s got secrets within secrets, layers upon layers - and this is the breadcrumb trail leading to the heart of darkness itself: a secret project. A project that existed in the shadows, hidden from the public eye and maybe even from most within Azimuth. And not just any project - the sinister kind that makes the galaxy quiver in its boots.

So, what do you think? Play the attached file. Listen close. And let me know... But be careful, Kasumi. The shadows have eyes, and they don’t take kindly to nosy commanders poking their noses where they shouldn’t.

And therefore, this transmission will self-destruct in three… two… just kidding.

OOC
This is a continuation of the Kasumi/Haraldsen story arc and leaves room between the conversation in the bar and this so that the RP with Silvia/Kasumi can continue at a later date which for the time being remains in an ambiguous state.

(reference post)

I leaned back in my cabin's chair, the flickering console casting a sickly glow across my face. A message from Kasumi had just pinged in, and I couldn’t help but smirk. She seemed to have a knack for causing trouble, only she hadn't stepped on the toes of one or two opponents - she had messed with an entire organisation.

"HIP 5840, huh?" I muttered to myself, fingers dancing over the holographic keyboard. A quick search revealed that Azimuth had been kicked out of the joint recently - just like she mentioned in her message. However, they were able to hold onto some minor outposts. And one of them looked rather promising to me: Ortiz Biochemical Consulting. The name rolled off my tongue like an intoxicating cocktail: high-tech economy, sprawling landing pads, an administrative center and big loading ramps. If Azimuth had ditched anything of worth during their hasty retreat, it’d be there. I could practically smell it.

I tapped out a reply to Kasumi, my fingers leaving phantom trails in the air.

"Thanks for your interesting message. Cargo hold’s still burping up its load, but I’ll be space-borne soon and on my way to meet up with you in that system. Maybe got something interesting for you in the meantime: Ortiz Biochemical Consulting. It's been a hub for their logistics, and my nose tells me that there might be something there... Keep an eye on it for me, will you? Maybe even cozy up to the locals. You know, sweet talk 'em a bit - or hit 'em over their head, infiltrate like a ghost - whatever you fancy. We’re hunting for intel - cargo routes, comms codes, anything that’ll grease the wheels."

As I pushed off from the console, the carrier’s artificial gravity tugged at my boots. Kasumi might be all business, but I had a feeling this little escapade would be anything but dull, and I better got things going soon. After all, in the black, you either danced with danger or got swallowed whole. And I damn well preferred the dance.

"Ortiz Biochemical Consulting," I murmured, stepping towards the carriers flight deck. "Hold onto your hat. We're coming in hot."
