Elite roleplay: The docks

THE DOCKS (Dockyards)

The Docks is where all pilots berth their ships. It is the first place that pilots find themselves upon landing their ship. Docking and launching is controlled by the Citi Gateway’s Traffic Controllers while each individual dock is controlled by a dockmaster and a team of orange clad dock crew workers.

The Docks is a sparse and desolate, 0.1G environment, littered with service vehicles, cranes and landing pads. While cool, the air is dry and lightly filled with the smell of burnt metal and ship grease. Public Service Announcements blare across the the docks reminding all pilots of station regulations. The docks contain 45 individual ship docks, several warehouses storing massive tank of hydrogen fuel, and standard shipping containers of cargo, the dock’s traffic control tower and the local pilot’s market which resides in one of the warehouses.

Ship docks
Each specific dock has a landing pad, a ship hangar and adjoining terminal. In each terminal there is a passenger waiting area, the dockmaster’s control tower and several dock crew vehicle bay.

Warehouses
If the docks were already unpopulated, warehouses would be completely vacant of anyone if not for a small handful of security staff. Warehouses are completely automated and highly guarded facilities as they contain massive amounts of valuable and flammable material.
"Loitering is a crime punishable by death" - Station Announcements

Pilot's Market
The pilot’s market is best described as a tourist trap for pilots. Every person who’s not a pilot is trying to guile a pilot to part with their credits.

"The station administrators would like to remind all pilots that transactions in the pilot’s market are not protected by Citi Gateway or The Bank of Zaonce" - station announcements

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“The Titans… I thought, I wanted to help build some kind of… coexistence, I think the word is. But it looks more like, we… both just want to keep shooting each other. No one bothers talking, or even trying to understand anymore. It is just stupid, senseless killing. Not even a purpose behind it any longer.”

The glyph on my hand lit up in something of a dark, sad blue color, reflecting the strongest of my emotions about the subject. It also became warm, as if that reaction made it produce heat… and reminded me to cover it up with the glove again.

“It is related to my connection to Azimuth, Thargoids… and why I hate them, and Salvation, so much. But… maybe I will only talk about this if we meet again.”

‘And we probably will’, I added in my thoughts.

“And the Zurara maybe doesn’t relate to me. I’m just… curious, about it. And I can decide if it is a direction worth pursuing, when I found what there is about it. But if peace with Thargoids cannot be an option… I need somewhere else to look. And I don’t want to deal with this stupid war right now. All we do is both shoot, nothing else. Aegis stopped even trying to bother understanding, just to ‘get rid of the Titans’. Like trying to drive them off to save a few more people now will not cause even worse in the future, than trying to understand why Thargoids are here, and try to talk to them.”

“If then, they didn’t listen, maybe we would have more reason to act like this. But now …”

I shook my head, looking disappointed.

“No. This is just dumb violence, and I don’t understand it. At all. I once trusted Aegis, to do things right. But these torpedoes, they are barely better than mycoid, or the Proteus Wave.”

“And I am… not very poetic. Or maybe I just haven’t found it again. But I would like to think, that I am not ‘boring’.”

I threw a hinting look at my body. Where, under normal circumstances, I wouldn’t see much more than breast, and how my hips spread out to the sides. But sat, I could get a pretty good look at my big thighs too. I probably didn’t need to say too much that I was quite fond of the form, even completely disproportionate and oversized as it was.
04 Apr 2024, 9:32am
"This war... it’s a cycle, a vortex sucking us into its depths. Aegis, their torpedoes, you've to understand they’re a response born of fear, not foresight. But somehow I can't shake the feeling that the current research into Thargoid drive components could lead to something even worse - because what if they develop something that allows humans to travel to the Thargoids' home systems?" Slowly, I shook my head.

"Trying to find a path that doesn’t fuel further conflict isn't wrong. Maybe this path is not coexistence, but it’s not annihilation either. I like to think that at least we should be able to head off in opposite directions, the universe being big enough for all of us."

I paused briefly, looking somewhat worried, my otherwise carefree demeanor blown away for a moment. "Anyway... your feelings are a beacon in this shadowed universe, a reminder that even amidst the chaos, there’s a soul yearning for peace. Perhaps the search for the Zurara is exactly the distraction you need right now. In any case, I wish you every success."

"Oh, and by the way... thinking yourself boring is like a unicorn saying it’s just a horse. Sure, if you ignore the rainbow mane..."
04 Apr 2024, 10:48am
“I was not saying, I see myself as ‘boring’. The opposite… very much. And, maybe, I like to be looked at a little. But not in public.”

I stretched, kind of wishing there was more than just micro-gravity here in the dock, so I could feel the weight of my body more. And wanted to pull my legs closer to the body, but the pilot’s seat wasn’t really suited to that.

“And I don’t know how possible peace or coexisting is, even in different parts of the galaxy. We are both here, and no one wants to go anywhere.”

“But if we begin to attack their homes, I will not stand for that. And this war… it is made. Orchestrated. I want to find the people responsible… not just Azimuth. Maybe that is another reason for my search of the Zurara. Or maybe it is not related. I don’t know. There is… no reason for peace to be so difficult to do anything about, even just on our side. Like someone… is trying to prevent it, for the war to continue.”

I sighed.

“We cannot win this war forever. If the Thargoids decide to be serious, we will be destroyed. And we should not be fighting with them in the first place.”
04 Apr 2024, 6:51pm
I twirled a lock of my hair, eyes sparkling with mischief. "Boring is indeed the last thing you are. And as for being looked at, well," I gave a nonchalant shrug, "some of us just stand out. Public or not." My voice was a velvet caress, soft and inviting.

"But don’t get me started on attacking homes. That’s a line I won’t cross. This war, it’s a game of shadows and whispers, and I’m tired of being a pawn. Azimuth, the Zurara… whatever, it is just the beginning of a trail I intend to follow to the end."

"And the Thargoids? If they truly wake up, we’ll need more than bravado. But until then," I winked, "let’s dance on the edge of danger and see who blinks first. After all, what’s life without a little thrill?" My laughter was a promise of adventure, as infectious as my audacity. "Come on, let’s turn this galaxy on its head..."

"...and let's start at the last known coordinates of the Zurara. There’s a trail there, I can feel it. And it’s not just about finding peace or picking a side. It’s about rewriting the rules of the whole damn game."
04 Apr 2024, 7:01pm
“Ok, but …”

I lifted both hands in a ‘slow down’ gesture.

“Need to get there, first. But I will send you the logs, and whatever else I find along the way, once I am there. Or my own take. With the logs from the ship. And you can tell me what you would like to do after that.”

“And, maybe, I can dance… as long as it is not fighting a Thargoid, or actually dancing. I don’t want to do one, and dancing… I really do not think I would do very well at it, now. You can, probably, guess, why that is the case.”

I placed my hands on my thighs again. Not so much symbolic this time, though it’d probably look that way. And I suspected the chest mass would actually be a bigger obstacle to it. Ignoring the even larger hurdle of social awkwardness and having absolutely no clue how to even do a dance, not even before my memory loss. Nor did I really want to. Then, I jumped back to something from a little earlier in the conversation.

“You mentioned Black Flight earlier, one of their pilots attacking you. But, they are… were not trying to draw the Thargoids, to the Pleiades. They were trying to stop people from finding out about them existing… unless you know that already?”

“And they could still be out there, looking for me… but if they still are, they have not shown themselves.”
05 Apr 2024, 9:49am
"Black Flight, now there’s a name that still sends shivers down the spine of the bravest pilots... I'm not sure how much you know about the history of the Pleiades, but I grew up there and experienced it first-hand. And I think at least since the events of 3303 and the attacks on several civilian and military convoys, the knowledge of the Thargoids was no longer a secret."

I paused, my eyes narrowing with a fierce intensity.

"Hell, even the Imperial Herald published an article about it that openly said these aliens were in Maia and Merope long before we were, and you know how closeted these imperial guys can be. Later the same year, Aegis launched Operation Andronicus, the first military operation intended to curb Thargoid aggression in the Pleiades Nebula. So whatever the plans of the Black Flight were, this unregistered comms beacon was not about suppressing knowledge that was already widespread at the time. Something much worse was going on - that's why the pilot attacked us. And only a short time later, the Pleiades were in flames."

I stretched my arms like a cat in the sun, every movement calculated to captivate. "Black Flight, Thargoids, the whole cosmic ballet - it’s a mess. I'm curious about what you'll find out there, hunting for the Zuzara. Can't wait to hear all about it. We'll then see how things go from there."

"And as for dancing," I chuckled, "I’ve got moves that would make a Thargoid blush - if they do that sort of thing. But of course that was only meant metaphorically, and you'd better keep your feet on the ground when you're out there alone in the void, yeah?"
05 Apr 2024, 10:24am
“But I like to float around lazily in low gravity.”, I replied, adding a bit of an innocent, maybe child-like tone and expression.

“In deep space, where there is no one to bother you, if you’re not at the controls. And I can dance in a ship, but, maybe not outside of it, now. Or not as well. Both in the… figurative, and actual kind. In a… ‘physical’ dancing contest, I would only win by knocking the opponent over. By …” I looked off in a random direction with a funny expression on the face. “… accidentally’ bumping them a little too hard.”

I switched back to the more serious demeanor.

“I know Black Flight failed to keep Thargoids suppressed, too. But do you think, they were deliberately trying to make us fight with them? I know we tried to steal their resources, from those… ‘barnacles’. Or maybe, it was, a distraction, while we did it?”

I shrugged.

“I don’t know. What do you think? And, clearly… attacking Thargoids just made them more angry. Instead of leaving. But I don’t know the whole history. I grew up… elsewhere. I think, but I can’t remember. I just know it was not in a nebula.”
05 Apr 2024, 1:25pm
I raised an eyebrow. "You’re quite the dancer, then."

"Float lazily in zero-G...", I chuckled, "and as for accidental bumps," I chuckled even more, my eyes glinting like polished steel, "I'd better not forget that in space, even the gentlest waltz can lead to a deadly tango..."

And then I couldn't contain myself any longer and my laughter echoed through the cockpit of the Phantom.

"But let’s talk about Black Flight. To be honest, I think we give them too much credit when we say they were up to this or that.... From what I understand, they were a covert military unit apparently operating under Azimuth Biochemicals and perhaps later Azimuth Biotech. I doubt they ever had an agenda of their own. And many people seem to believe that they were destroyed during the Proteus Wave incident. For all we know, at least their main purpose of suppressing knowledge of the Thargoids became irrelevant, so they may have disbanded anyway."

I leant back and looked at my hostess. "The universe is a tangled web of secrets and lies," I said. "Sometimes you have to dig deeper to find the truth or knowledge - sometimes you have to dance your way through the chaos. And if you're clumsy, you step on a few toes along the way - as was perhaps the case with the Thargoids. Who knows."
05 Apr 2024, 1:44pm
I shrugged.

“I can’t fight like I used to, being more mobile. So I could as well use being… a little heavy, to my advantage.”

And because I still felt a little embarrassed about the weight these additions to my body had caused - which was a lot - I blushed a little.

“And I know Black Flight were used by Azimuth, but it makes them no less… dangerous? I don’t know what to use. If they had standards, or… morals, they would not kill people for finding out that Thargoids are more than myth. Or were. And throw them out of airlocks. Like they… probably, did on the old Aegis megaship. The Alexandria.”

“And I don’t think they are really, gone. But they do different things now. There was a time… last year, where Seo found or showed Nemesis to people. She was attacked, near the Azimuth headquarters in the Bubble. By ships with no identification. I… doubt that was just, any random people hired to attack. Or that they had no relation to Azimuth. Yet, to tell if it was them - Black Flight - would be… difficult. Because they won’t like to be found.”

I paused, shifting my mass around on the seat a little.

“I wish there was a little more gravity here. But, also, I don’t expect searching about these things to be simple. It never is. And it will not stop me from looking.”

Another pause interrupted my speaking.

“Though, I would prefer to not ‘bump’ anyone unless I do it on purpose. Or, at least, I would like to avoid making Thargoids angry. … and I have bumped people on purpose. They may have fallen over, if they weren’t sitting.”
05 Apr 2024, 4:08pm
"Can’t fight like you used to, huh?" I smirked. "Well, my dear, sometimes it’s the heavy hitters who survive out here. You know, the ones who can take a punch and still stay standing."

I tapped my fingers on the chair, mimicking the rhythm of distant gunfire. "So the Black Flight is not gone... seemingly just changed their tune. New instruments, same old symphony. Morals? Ha! The only standard they have is the 'survival of the sneakiest'. No ID on those attackers? Smells indeed like Black Flight’s stench to me. They’re like bad perfume - can’t shake 'em off, and they reek of trouble."

"And Seo? Seo’s got the guts of a neutron star, I’ll give her that... Thinking about it, I don't know what to make of the Nemesis thing though. Do you think there really is some kind of robot Salvation in there now?"

With a playful grin, I add "So you do keep bumping people, huh? Accidentally-on-purpose? Well, that’s one way to make friends. Just remember, in this galaxy, there are no accidents - only opportunities."
05 Apr 2024, 4:25pm
“I only bump people on purpose when they annoy me. Like, by complaining about my ‘size’. And that means, I don’t want to make a friend of them.”

“Or… maybe, I might do it to someone I know as a joke. And… a little more gently. In that case. But it isn’t too often that I do.”

I breathed in and out deeply, as if creating a distinct separation between subjects.

“And I believe he is out there, in a machine… somewhere. I would like to find him, too, but don’t know where to look, or how I would.”

“The only thing I know is that Azimuth are hiding it. Why, I am not sure. Maybe they lost it, because the Guardians had AI of their own. Or they really just haven’t changed, and are trying to save face. While being very insulting to Seo and Aegis.”

I shook my head.

“They are stupid. I don’t know anyone that believes that they… Azimuth, have changed. Not even their supporters.”

"Thank you for flying Apex, we hope to see you again soon" chirped the pilot with fake cheer.

His own ship was good in a fight, but crap on long flights. Apex wasn't his first choice, but liners weren't flying in systems still threated by Thargoids.

So this was Citigateway. What craphole. Shouldering his kit bag Le Fresh locked boots on the stations deck and looked around hoping to find something to improver his first take on the place. Nothing did.

His long stride took him to the elevators.

The precautions at the racetrack hadn't been neccacerry, but it was good to have taken them any way. Now she had about fifty people wanting their extra pay and their extra week paid leave. A lot of them fancied the air bike races, and the less than legal activities offered in a system rebuilding after evacuation, so Inara had seemed as good a place as any to spend free time.

Taking care of pay and timetables on the computer was easy, but it did good for the boss to show her face and personally thank some of the people that had agreed to be bodyguards, or air cover in a dangerous situation.

As Lambast had an old friend to meet here any way, it wasn't a problem to make an appearance at the bar to raise a glass with some of her employees.

Taking a preparatory breath, Lambast braced herself for the organized mess that was the Glactic Bar.

The Alpina, emblazoned with the ERS logo, sat on platform 73 with all of the imperiousness one might expect from an Imperial cutter with the audacity to flaunt its immaculate condition in the midst of a damaged station. Having not been lowered into the hangars for cargo offloading served two purposes. The first was to ensure all operations were conducted in the open without interference by less than savory groups. The second was presentation, to show that the Emerald Repatriation Society use Gutamaya craft for operations, not just in charity ads and public relations.

Cargo operations had gone smoothly, something Vasil had rarely encountered when offloading supplies at the station. More often than not there was always last minute haggling over the price, or delays getting the cargo unloaded due to the high volume of materials being brought in for repairs. This time, though, the 208 slave pods being delivered were offloaded within two hours, and the final payment made soon after.

The efficiency, Vasil knew, was due to contract agreements with the Imperial companies helping repair the station. In exchange for delivering slaves within 48 hours of an order, the companies paid ERS slightly over market value. They also gave ERS preferred status when transporting former slaves back to Imperial space, which ERS took full advantage of.

Though their slave contracts had been completed and their debts absolved, many former slaves found themselves financially unstable. It had been Vasil’s idea to consider these former slaves as war refugees, allowing ERS to extend aid to them. The ERS board was 100% behind the initiative. Octavia agreed since it would mean more possible citizen supporters for her political ambitions. Kat, ever the idealist, loved the idea since it played to her deep sense of compassion. For Vasil it was simply good business. Getting paid to deliver slaves to damaged stations and then transport freed slaves to the Emerald Dawn.

It would be a few more hours before taking on ex-slave passengers, so Vasil lounged on the command deck monitoring the open channels, and the ERS secure channel for word from Sgt Lydko that the VIP passenger had been secured. A voice in the background of the open flight channels caught his attention. He thought he recognized it, but was unsure. Lady Mercy had mentioned something about Inara a while back, but he’d certainly not expected to see the woman here, assuming it was her voice he heard for those few seconds amidst the chaos of the flight control chatter.

"Azimuth’s lies are like shadows," I murmured, my voice a low thrum of disillusionment. "They cloak the truth in darkness, leaving us to grope blindly for answers that slip through our fingers like stardust."

"The distant worlds, the forgotten outposts and ancient ruins where hope dies - secrets lie dormant there, some still undiscovered. There we find more whispers of the lost and damned, their fate a cautionary tale, a reminder of the depths to which one can sink in the pursuit of domination and power... And there is more than one such legend, more than one relic scattered across unknown worlds to remind us. But for those with the courage to seek truth, these are not only monuments... and they are a siren song to all those who cannot resist the allure of the unknown. And the Zurara - what secrets did the crew uncover that far away from home? Who knows what truths lie waiting in its forsaken corridors and halls gone silent...?"

A slow, knowing smile crept across my lips. "To search for truth is to embark on a journey with no map, to follow a trail blazed by the stars themselves. But in the vast expanse of the cosmos, where countless stars exist, the pursuit of understanding should eclipse the drums of war. So should we dare to dance with the ghosts of the past?" I asked, my gaze piercing, challenging to join me in unraveling the galaxy’s most enigmatic riddles.
