So, Horizons player will finally have a taste of new planet tech and the glorious UI. I cannot see how this will go wrong

FDev using Horizons 4.0 as a teaser to sell more copies of Odyssey. Big brain idea!

Horizons players will use freecam mode to peek into station concourses and see all the cool dudes and hot chicks hanging out at the bar. Which they cannot reach, because no disembark button.

They have to get rid of 3.8 so they can add more ships. They won't invest in making a low poly version of any new ships.

Fixed that for you.

Yup, they could add new ships to 4.0 at any time if they wanted to. They already added a SRV that is not in 3.8.

New EDO exclusive ship models would boost sales regardless of the actual BS the game is.

Imagine FCs were exclusive to EDO

The post from FDev said they will be leaving 3.8 as an option for PC players to be in if they so choose to do so. So 3.8 is technically not going away.

Pretty sure many people will now think twice about buying any Frontier game.

You don't even know how I agree on this one. Don't get me wrong, Xbox One and PS4 might be dated... but at the same time we have Xbox Series and PS5. As user of Series S, I'm just perplexed that simple phasing out of Xbox One version wasn't the way Frontier would decide to go with then just restrict Odyssey to Series S/X - that's mainly because there's something like optimizing patch that in fact makes the games reasonably different to unleash software potential locked by older consoles.

As former user of Xbox One, switching to Xbox Series S was like switching from an old horse cart to an affordable small car. It's not Ferrari, but does its job perfectly for a very affordable price that doesn't fall back from more expensive car models.

EpisparhHonestly, Frontier done more than enough for progress transferring from console to PC. You either jump on or jump out.
Complaining, won't help. The boat left the port.

Well, it is not out fault that we are stuck with the wages that are absolutely inadequate to getting even a mid-range PC in reasonable amount of time (unless you want to stop reading books, stop socializing with people, or absolutely cease having any sort of hobby). You see, there's a huge gap between what is a bare minimum wage and there's that average wage which a lot of people mistake for how much average people earn over here.

I don't know anyone who earns even half of the average national wage.

Given that the GDPR contract that still binds me not to share any info from the time I worked at the tax office I can't give any details, but... I can only say that EU pricing is so inadequate to local wages. I don't want to say anything about inflation, because that alone makes me fuming just by writing about it.

A gaming PC seems like a rock bottom necessity right now and that's why a lot of people in here turned their attention to the consoles, which do not require the sums you'd spend on the gaming PC - given you don't need top-shelf laptop for most of the office work. "But why you play video games then if that's so expensive then?" Well, at this point of my mental stability and overall life the only alternatives to reduce stress are highly addictive and harmful to health, such as smoking or drinking alcohol. Or they are way out of financial reach, like I write before.

To sum it up, while more and more developers started giving their attention to consoles, I find it very weird that Frontier cut itself from the (not so small) player community that grew thanks to the severe issues with PC hardware that went absurd more than once - and saw new consoles as less expensive replacement.

I impulse purchased a HOTAS during the weekend. Mainly for MSFS2020 but figured I should give it a go with Elite, which I exclusively played on an Xbox pad since launch, so muscle memory is very much engrained based on the pad.

Everything takes three times as long (I used to yeet-land my ships on the pads, now I land like a complete noob even with FA On), my combat/evasive skills are shot to pieces, not to mention FA Off abilities, but I have to say it is much more immersive... even on-foot gameplay which I set to M&K is more pleasant that way (the pad controls work but at times feel like wading through mud with your hands tied behind your back).

Getting all the keybinds right was a real pain though, MSFS does this so much better - especially when you don't know what button 7 (or 16 - without even telling you if it's the stick or the throttle) actually is other than through trial and error - and I haven't figured out yet how to use the FSS with M&K while keeping ship controls to the HOTAS. It's a horrible experience trying to resolve dozens of bodies with the flight stick.

I first started with just a generic gamepad and played with that for a few weeks. I felt it was way too limiting so I decided to go hotas. Once I started using a hotas, it took me about 2-3 weeks to adjust. And then another few weeks to figure out a key bind configuration that felt natural to me. I used to use it for ships and SRVs but now I only use it for ship related gameplay. I use kb+m for on foot and srv.

It'll be interesting to see if I can manage to pull off some moves I managed to do with the pad with my HOTAS, even after allowing some time to readjust, especially with the longer travel of both the stick and the throttle. Tbh I don't see a lot of other players these days, even in locations like Deciat (usually CGs are the only safe bet now) so fending off simple NPCs shouldn't pose too much of a problem - though that NPC interdiction yesterday (I was in my Cobra) was much harder work with the stick.

Question though, how do you control the FSS? That's the one thing that still feels awkward as I have to use the flight stick for it. I tried to assign mouse controls but it doesn't seem to let me assign any (I'm using a moderately modified HOTAS preset for ship controls). - edit: googled it, will have to give those solutions a try later.

Since Frontier decided to stick to the narrative that Horizons 4.0 isn't the latest release of Horizons but rather a "tech demo" for Odyssey, it's only appropriate to acknowledge this in a Steam review:
