Starfield: General talk

ArtieWell, the "problem" is that Starfield is a good game or at least not worse than Skyrim, Fallout 4 and such. It's not absolutely perfect, as people are pointing to its flaws as on the videos posted earlier, but many of these flaws simply do not matter (like why it should bother me some other game has better ripples/effects on the grenade tossed into the water). But I agree that comparisons of Elite and Starfield have not much point - very different games, although they share some common points. Same way as none of these games can be compared to No Man's Sky.

Bethesda's trademark used to be handcrafted maps with a thousand points of interest on them. Starfield is a thousand generated maps with a single point of interest on each. Because you can't land the ship yourself, the game drops it half a kilometer away from the POI. You have to walk/run/jump to the POI, because there's no rover. If you go in the opposite direction, there'll be nothing until you hit invisible walls. That's what Bethesda now considers "exploration." Most of the POIs are generic, repetitive and forgettable, just like Odyssey settlements. We often complained about this aspect of ED, so why are we praising it now in a Bethesda game?

This makes me roll my eyes so much. None of that is an issue, at all.

Starfield is a good game, but as usual with flaws on release.

No game is "perfect", even after many updates, but the pearl clutching over Starfield gameplay is ridiculous.
People think because they've played a game or made a prototype they are experts in how to make a commercial product.

MitxelStarfield is not elite dangerous, get it into your heads, it is a space fallout

No, it's not. Like ED (and unlike Fallout) it uses procedurally generated content to fill the 1000 planets/moons you can travel to.

In ED the generated content at least serves as mere background for a pretty good flight simulator. But Starfield wants to be an RPG, and generated content has no place in RPGs.

People hated the radiant quests in Fallout 4 because these would send you to the same locations again and again. Starfield sends you to the same locations again and again as well, but it's trying to fool you by pretending they're on different planets.

I have removed a few posts and please, let's stop it here. As in any discussion - if you don't agree with somebody's opinion, confront the post content, not its author.

Wow. You let someone troll the forum and we disagree, so we are the bad guys?
They don't even own Starfield by their own admission, yet we have to listen to "muh opinion" on it while we are the ones actually playing and enjoying it?

We have enough of this trolling on the Steam forums and you're just enabling it here under "opinion", and they don't even play it.

Why should we have to listen to this?

I have 1600+ hours in ED and uninstalled EDO due to the abject state it's in, and Starfield is so much better.

I could hang around on the ED forum nit picking ED/EDO to death based on actual EXPERIENCE but I don't.

Why do we have to listen to obviously biased -ve opinions of Starfield based on no decent amount (in fact ZERO) of first hand experience (with an open mind) here then?

There is not a problem with a disagreement, feel free to disagree with each other as you like. The important difference is that any disagreement should confront the opinion, the post content, not its author. For example, when somebody states: "In my opinion, the sky is red all the day." the valid reaction (if there is a reaction needed at all) should be something like: "I don't think you are right, because the light in an atmosphere works this and this way, there are multiple photos showing otherwise..." and so on. The reaction like: "You are a colorblind idiot, the sky is clearly blue." is, well.... not so valid. It's a hyperbole, of course, but I believe you see the point.

KotokuThat's a disingenuous wiggle out. pfft.

No, that's how addressing the posts in the civilized discussions should work.

At some point you've got to stop rewarding people with ill-intentions, Artie.

There's very little discussion to be had with individuals who first join a forum discussion under the guise of interest for a game they haven't played, only to quickly reveal that they have to intention of playing it, and that their only reason for being in said forum is to gleefully bait people into a combative argument (which has happened before with said person that I'm sure you're familiar with in the off-topic forum).

Obviously I don't mind engaging with people who haven't played a game that I have, and I started out the "discussion" pretty friendly, but it's not hard to see where things take the bait and troll turn. Not that I think you're punishing Koto and I, but I think you're wagging your finger at us for not taking the moral high-ground here (which is fair I suppose), but it's hard to "confront post content" and not the "author" when the author has a history of doing elsewhere on your forums what they are doing here in this thread and you continuously confront everyone else but them about it.

Well, in my opinion, dispelling any incorrectly formed opinions, etc. is best to be made with facts. Also, in this case, I believe Saka had no ill intentions, just some personal gameplay preferences and opinions based on second-hand information (that although may be often correct, may be also sometimes misleading, biased or simply wrong). That's why I think is best to not immediately jump to hasty conclusions but explain things.

So, to get back on topic - yes, Starfield has some generated content/radiant quests and events. But also, it has a ton of hand-crafted quests and even the radiant locations (unless some boring stuff like caves) have a good quality, so it's not a big problem. So far, I had no issue with them, it adds some extra content you can also easily ignore, if you do not wish to engage with it - there is enough of other things to do.

knowing you havent done something and arguing with ppl who have about that very thing is always maliciously intended

But you don't, and rightfully so. I have 4,800 hours in ED. With only 1,600 hours you're clearly not entitled to have an opinion about that game.

Btw, I have 2,300+ hours in vanilla Fallout 4. Which shows how much I hate Bethesda games and how little I know about what makes them work and what doesn't. If I have an opinion about Starfield, it can only be maliciously intended. Let's just ignore that Starfield is the lowest rated Bethesda game since Fallout 76. Clearly they're all wrong about it.

/smh

I respect the opinion that people don't like something, I thought you were looking for reasons to buy Starfield or not. I can't answer that, in short all games are about going from A to B, or shooting or frying hamburgers . In any case, Starfield is much more fun than Fallout, I'm playing it and I've played Fallout, Skirim... What I can't do is compare different games completely, Starfield vs ED, or Star Citizen vs ED... it doesn't lead to nothing. My opinion about the hours played in Starfield is good, in general, without trying to influence other minds... and let everyone make their own idea, it is their money, their time, not mine.

Starfield is Fallout in space with smaaal grain of spacesim. Just because there is no real flights besides arcade battles in orbit.
