CMDR PAUSANIAS - THE SHIP OF THE MIND EXPEDITION - DAY 79

AN EARTHLIKE WITHOUT LIFE, OR IS IT?

Hi Cmdrs,

I’ve set off in the Cutter today on the initial 25 jumps to the Carrier and within one jump I found this lovely blue planet. There is nothing particularly unusual about it, I just thought the blue was stunning.

After a couple more jumps I found a planet with icy rings and the all important Tritium hotspot, so I flew in.

After mining a full 266 tons I left the rings behind to carry on the journey.

Then . . . BINGO! A system with an Earthlike World in that I can make a claim on. The necessary information has shot off to the Codex and this little beauty has my name on.

This same system also had a Waterworld too. I flew over to it and arranged this composition to include the Earthlike in the background.

What a find!

This is an image of a HMC I came across with unusual dark areas so I had to go over and investigate. As I approached the planet I was convinced the dark areas were mountain ranges but when I got right up close it was a Black Ocean. You can see the fjords around the oceans edge, it was the cloud cover giving the impression of mountains as I approached.

I reached The Carl Sagan and handed in 13,000,000 of scan data together with the Tritium and then it hit me! Was that Earthlike inhabited? I had to find out, so I switched to the Asp Explorer, with its new Azure paint job, and set off on the 3 jumps back to that system. I found the Earthlike again and flew over going round the back this time . . .

No lights! Now does that mean no life, probably, no civilisation at least, there could be life down there of course. One other possibility I thought of, a whole planet that has decided that they won’t use lights so as not to produce light pollution at night so astronomers can see the night sky clearly, perhaps they might have seen me flying over?

I then set off back to where I’d sent the Carrier earlier, this meant 11 jumps back. On route though I remembered I needed some Tungsten so I’ve landed on a moon which has 0.7% Tungsten, tomorrow I’ll take the SRV out and search some out. You can see my new paint job in this image.

I’ll be staying here for the night.
