CMDR PAUSANIAS - THE SHIP OF THE MIND EXPEDITION - DAY 81

DRILLING IS THE FASTEST WAY TO MINE, IN MY OPINION, AND, SOLVING THE EARTHS TREE PROBLEMHi Cmdrs,
I finished mining the 266 tons of Tritium I needed today and set off on the 22 jumps required to reach the The Carl Sagan.
I've noticed that drilling rocks (sub-surface mining) seems to be the most effective way of mining. Surface mining with lasers is good but if you find a rock with sub-surface deposits they're the ones to go for. Here's how and why.
You need to find these type of rocks by Pulse Scanning the area ahead of you, if you’re lucky enough to see a rock light up hot shoot a Prospector at it and head over to it.
Quite often there will be an amount of Tritium to surface mine first, then if there are any surface chunks knock those off and if you have sub-surface deposits go for this last. Sometimes you can find 3 or 4 of these sub-surface ‘holes’, they will have a varying amount of Tritium ‘chunks’ in them, the amount of chunks you can get varies enormously but it’s usually 1, 2 or 3 chunks per explosion.
However, there is something that’s usually constant. On the first drilling you’ll get the following results . . .
If the percentage left drops to 67% after the first drill you’re going to get two more goes in the same hole taking the percentage from 67% to 33% then to zero, so THREE goes in that hole.
If on the first drill the percentage drops to 75% your going to achieve 50%, then 25%, then zero, so FOUR goes at drilling.
At FIVE goes you’ll go 80%, 60%, 40%, 20% then zero.
This continues on to SIX drills showing 84%, 66%, 50%, 33%, 17% then zero.
Then there’s the Big Daddy, EIGHT drill chances showing 87%, 75%, 63%, 50%, 37%, 25%, 13% then zero.
Each of these chunks tends to be ONE ton of Tritium so if you find a rock with 4 drill sites, two of which are 8’s and the other two are just 3’s, that’s 22 tons straight away, this is the equivalent of about 6-7 rocks surface mined!
Just thought I’d mention it. Oh, and if they’re not spinning much it’s a lot easier to drill!
Having finished mining I set of on the jumps to the Carrier handing in 16,000,000 in exploration data, setting up the next jump and setting off on the 26 jumps after it.
After a couple of jumps I found this Waterworld with an usually large polar ice cap.
I then found a planet which I think I’ve solved the Earth’s tree problem with . . .
This planet looks like it’s made of WOOD, if it is how many tables could be made from a lump of wood the size of a planet?!
I’ve knocked off tonight in another Tritium hotspot and I’ve mined a few tons to get me started ready for tomorrow.
I need some sleep, twice today I’ve flown too close to Suns re-fuelling and caused damage to the Cutter.
