CMDR PAUSANIAS - THE SHIP OF THE MIND EXPEDITION - DAY 95

12 Nov 2020Pausanias
TIME FOR A CHANGE IN TACTICS

Hi Cmdrs,

Whilst travelling around a system last night I’ve had a thought, to use The Carl Sagan‘s Tritium store more effectively, so I’ve had a word with Diego Miles, my Fuel Supervisor, and he has agreed to my idea.

On one of the jumps I’ve done today I found this Gas Giant with Water Based Life. This shot was taken virtually over one of the poles, I did this because of the unusual ‘spots’ around the pole, I don’t think I’ve seen this effect before.

I finished jumping the 23 jumps to the Carrier and handed in 6,500,000 credits for the exploration data.

Then spoke to Diego about my idea and he was thrilled as you can see here.

Basically it’s virtually all maths as follows:-

We have 24,500 tons of Tritium in the Carriers hold, plus the reserve of about 300 at the time we were having this conversation. It takes about 135 tons for each 500 light year jump, so 24,5000 divided by 135 is 181 Carrier jumps, each jump will be about 480 light years so that means we have enough Tritium to travel over 87,000 light years. I am currently 45,500 light years from Beagle Point so we can practically get to Beagle Point AND back to where we are now just on the fuel we have in the hold, that’s without mining anything.

Further, if I’m not mining, I could use the Asp to jump between Carrier jumps which will be much quicker. The Asp takes 8 jumps between Carrier jumps whereas the Cutter takes 22-25 jumps. Now I know this means less scanning but I’m thinking get to Beagle Point and then on the return journey revert back to the Cutter and mining scenario that got me this far.

So, I have marked the system we are in. What I might do is come back to here before reversing the process again and fast jumping back to the Bubble.

It sounds like a plan.

We’ve loaded the Carrier up with 900 tons using the stocks in the cargo bays. Jumped the Carrier and I’ve swapped into the Asp Explorer. This made it 8 jumps to chase the Carrier.

I did the first batch of 8 jumps, arrived at the Carrier and handed in a further 5,500,000 exploration data and set the next jump sequence up and set off on that 8 jump journey.

I’ve only done a couple more jumps tonight before landing here near these fumaroles, at this time I don’t even know what kind they are. Time for bed. Explore them tomorrow.

Good night Cmdrs
