CMDR PAUSANIAS - THE SHIP OF THE MIND EXPEDITION - DAY 96

NO SRV WAY OUT AND ANOTHER EARTHLIKEHi Cmdrs,
Having got into the SRV on the planet I ended up on last I had a quick drive around. Turns out these Fumaroles are Carbon Dioxide Ice Fumaroles, I found some of these before so I didn’t stay too long. However, where I landed was down a pit of spiky ‘stalagmite’ type mountains, see this image. Look at the steepness of the mountains, almost vertical.
As I left this planet I decided to film a fly around the area to show the unforgiving terrain surrounding this Geological Signal. I’ve never seen such a large area with such uneven features.
After shooting the video I turned skyward and jumped on to The Carl Sagan without much ado.
Upon arriving at the Carrier I handed in just 500,000 in scan data and then set up the next Carrier jump. I also switched to the Sidewinder just for a change of ship. As I left the Carrier I flew around to the nameplate and snapped this image of the tiny Sidewinder against these huge Carriers.
I then set off on the 15 jumps required to reach the Carrier. A few jumps in I found a system with a Water World and a High Metal Content planet. I scanned the Water World and set off to the HMC but I got distracted talking to a couple of Squadron members on sub-space communications, when I got back to concentrating on what I was doing I was 300,000 light seconds PAST the HMC!
Now, it’s quicker to jump out the system and back in than travelling 300,000 light seconds back, fortunately there was another system just 4 light years away. This turned out to be very helpful as I found an Earthlike! Just look at this superb image of a Sidewinder virtually in orbit around it.
This is a shot taken from the Sidewinders cockpit of the Earthlike showing the haze of the atmosphere where it meets space
I left there and jumped back to the original system and scanned the HMC which was only about 400 light seconds out, better than doing 300,000 light seconds!
A few more jumps and I snapped this Lava High Metal Content planet too, again in low orbit.
I took the Sidewinder down to another planet with Geological Signals but I can’t land the ship as I haven’t got an SRV in the Sidey so there’s no point setting it down. I tried scanning the fumaroles with the Sidewinders scanner but they were more Carbon Dioxide Ice Fumaroles which I’ve scanned before so I turned around and headed for open space again. This was a particularly good looking planet so I took this image as I entered orbit.
I carried on to the Carrier and handed in a further 11,500,00 credits for exploration data. I’ve added some more Tritium to the Carrier’s reserve but not moved it tonight. I’m going to have a good shower and sleep in my comfortable cabin tonight, tomorrow’s another day.
Night Commanders.
