Elite roleplay: Citi Gateway

CITI GATEWAY

The Orbis station is a center of activity. Within the station a myriad of places can be found.
  • The Warrens: Where the poor plebs of the station live. It's is a breeding ground for the most unscrupulous. Keep an eye on your wallet when traversing the corridors of these areas.
  • Habitation Complex: For those workers and pilots that can afford it, this area provides closer to 1G gravity for more earth like living.
  • Commerce Divison: and Administration Where the larger corporations make their home. Station administration can be found here.
  • Industrial Complex: Where industry manufactures their various goods.
  • Entertainment: District Bars, theaters and night clubs, tattoo parlors and other establishments can be found vying for a commanders credits in exchange for a bit of fun.
  • Station Security: A high tech brig used to house law breakers until they can be tried, and or deported off station.
  • Medical Ward: Where commanders can get patched up, enhanced, or fix existing cybernetics.

General Roleplay Etiquette:

1. Control only the actions of your own character(s). (AKA: God Mode)
This doesn't matter how small the action is, even if it is as simple as scratching their nose or a direct reaction to something else that just happened. This applies to everything from casual conversation to full blown fight scenes. If you'd like someone to do something specific, PM that person, however keep in mind they are completely within their rights to say no. Especially if said action is inappropriate to their character and/or circumstance.

2. Don't brute force your way into another persons RP.
Approaching with a conversation starter is fine, or indeed some other small action. However charging in, guns blazing and disrupting the flow of another person/pair/groups conversation/arc is about as rude as doing so in real life. If something is going on that you'd like to participate in, be subtle about it. Put out a gentle hook for someone to take, but again, be aware that said hook may not be taken. If you fear it was simply unnoticed, PM the person or people it concerns. Or even leave a message in the OOC forums.

3. Good grammar and spelling is preferred.
We're not asking you to be perfect, but please at least demonstrate willingness. no1 iz gna tak u srsly usng txt spk. There's a wide variety of people here, many who speak English as a second, or even third language. There are even some with varying degrees of dyslexia and/or likely other issues that affect spelling/grammar. We accept them all here. However, people who aren't accepted, are those unwilling to accept polite correction. Remember that even a small thing like the placement of a comma, or the wrong use of there/their/they're can completely change the definition of an entire sentence.

4. Accept constructive criticism gracefully and politely.
If someone spots an issue with your writings, they may wish to help you improve that writing. They may do this through PM or even publicly air their thoughts on the OOC forum. If they have taken the time to be polite and explain what is wrong with your writing, the best way to behave is to respond in kind, using the same manner they have approached you with. It means they have taken an active interest in what you have written and wish to see more. Basically, you have a fan!

5. Don't take the actions or opinions of things done IN RP, to be directly relevant to the writers thoughts or opinions.
Basically, if some ones character calls your character a jackass, it doesn't mean the writer thinks you are a jackass. It's a ROLE they are PLAYING. Watch a movie. The argument between the characters isn't an argument between the actors involved. The same applies here.

6. It's not a popularity contest.
Your RP might be bustling with participants. You have 3 people off station in a fire fight, while another 2 are infiltrating the darkest areas of the station, meanwhile a group of 4 others are tracking your movements in an effort to stop you. Good for you, I'm sure it will be a thrilling read! But you know what? Sometimes the absolute BEST work, comes from two RP characters having a simple heart to heart. Both are valid, both are great, but NEITHER is categorically better than the other. Period.

Inara RP Etiquette:

1. Respect the setting and rules of the universe.
Inara is an Elite: Dangerous 3rd Party Tool. The RP Forums are set in the Elite: Dangerous universe. Elite: Dangerous has rules, as any fictional universe does from Lord of the Rings to Star Wars, or Game of Thrones to Star Trek. If you intend to RP within the Elite: Dangerous universe you are bound by the history and rules of that universe. Simply put, this RP forum is bound by the same rules as the game, so if it can't be done in the game, it is not permitted here. This applies to things from a 50Ly Jump Range on a normal, unmodified Sidewinder, to the destruction of entire stations.

2. Respect the characters created by others.
We have a wide variety of characters already here. It's expected that some will be similar, just as it's expected that two characters will be vastly different. Opinions of each persons character will naturally be varied, but all are valid provided they follow the rules of the universe. You are allowed to interact with, or avoid interaction with, any character in the RP forums. But you have no right to belittle others for their creation. You are not an authority figure on writing, nor are you directly affected by another persons imagination. You might not like it, but you MUST respect it.

3. Be caught up on current events before joining in.
You need basic things like character descriptions in order to interact with them. You also need to know what's going on in the surrounding areas. This is simply because the people you are hoping to RP with, might be gearing up to something that you might not want to be part of. Or simply that the most recent post, out of context, could leave a different impression on the goings on than if you gather that context. We don't expect you to read every single post from the beginning of the forums, just enough to get that basic understanding.

4. Either subscribe to, or frequently check, the Roleplay: Q&A and OOC forum.
People may be discussing something relevant to you there, or even discussing you directly. Perhaps someone asked what the general consensus on the existence or non-existence of a certain object. Or we're just chatting about random gibberish. Either way, be aware of it and use it. If you're unsure about something, such as how guns would look and or behave, or even the music selection, use the OOC forum to ask. We don't have all of the answers, but the collective knowledge and logic usually allows us to overcome an issue and come to a decision on what should be allowed. Frontier Developments, and even David Braben himself, don't have the answers to every possible question that can be asked.

5. Large Scale events exploding out of nowhere are a complete no go.
We get it. Everyone wants their character to be noticed and for people to be tripping over themselves to interact with them. In some audiences, an introduction involving you blasting in for landing in a fiery wreckage of a ship, before cart wheeling out and sword fighting 35 Ninjas before whisking off with the local celebrity for a glorious night of passion, is in fact, cool. This is not one of those audiences. It is generally considered better to build your character up slowly over time. Eventually, you might even have a legitimate excuse to fight those Ninjas. Maybe even with other RP participants by your side.

6. Perfect characters are boring.
The point of a character arc, is that it is in fact, an arc shape. One who is morally unquestionable, fully kitted out and an infinite fountain of knowledge, cannot go through an arc. Give your character flaws. Be it a tendency towards befriending the wrong people, or a bad knee that frequently gives out at inopportune moments. It gives readers something to latch onto and empathise with. You can give your character exceptional capabilities at something, but it requires balance. She's a damn good pilot with no equal, but can't drive an SRV for peanuts. It can lead to some very interesting moments between characters, be it heartfelt or comedic.

Other Notes:
It should be noted that there can be exceptions to these points. For example, good grammar when a character is speaking is actually rare. Few people in real life actually speak with perfect eloquence after all. Or previously arranged actions during a fight scene, such as someone stumbling back after a punch. What's key to remember is context.

All in all, remember this is purely for fun. We have some seriously talented writers here, and others whose writing history starts and ends at high school. But many are willing to help out in whatever way they can. All it takes is that you ask nicely.

Also keep in mind that many people who RP here, also have logbook stories related to the character, or characters, they portray. If it looks like there's an "in joke" going on that you're unsure of, it's probably in those.

In fact, some users have even gone to the trouble of creating "alts" to RP with. If you read back far enough, it's usually pretty clear who has and hasn't, and which ones are the "alts". It's therefore not unheard of to see the apparent seizing of control of other characters. If you do spot one, point it out in the OOC section. If intervention is needed, it will be sorted quickly and (hopefully) politely.

Most, if not all RP participants here have Logbook stories pertaining to their character(s). These are for the reading pleasure of anyone who wishes to do so. While it can be useful to read them in order to gain a bit of backstory on a character you wish to interact with, it should not be assumed that your character shares that knowledge. Within the E:D Universe, these Logbooks either don't exist, or are private diaries kept by the characters. Either way, without explicit statements to say otherwise from the writer, your interactions should reflect that your character is in the dark about any information you, the writer/reader, have gained from reading the stories.

“I guess we should go then, too.”, I remarked to Meowers, looking after the man as he wandered off, right hand placed on hip.

A large part of me preferred not to think on the events that were about to ensue, instead wanting to continue a chat that had already met its end, and for which I had no real further things to add to.

What remained was very much occupied with somber thoughts, most of which ended in outcomes where I met an early end. I had already gone into missions with supposedly near-zero chances of survival, stared down the Grim Reaper, or his physical equivalent, and survived through sheer stubborness, with some luck. Once, he had even snatched my ‘soul’, only to have it stolen from him in the last moment.

Those times, I had gone into the missions without hesitation, thinking I was already at the end of my short life, and more importantly, ready to give it for the simple chance of revenge. Yet, I survived, where I wanted to die.

And now, things looked very differently. I was much more aware of the chances of death, and at least wanted to continue living - but not without another person I came to care for. If I couldn’t get her out of that hellhole, I would at least know I gave my life in trying to do that. If I had to give myself to see her out, I’d do that, too.

Finishing that thought, I looked at Meowers directly.

“I just want to say it… if this is the last time we get to talk. I… appreciate what we… spoke about. I guess you’re now the person I’d most want to be next to, to die. In a fight, that is. It wouldn’t do to be near you and die of something really stupid like food poisoning.”

"Yep... And, thank you," I nodded.

There are several ways for human minds to deal with the stress of inevitable danger, as far as I knew. And 'positive distraction' was one of them. An attempt to keep the heavy thoughts away as long as it was possible, replacing them with something else, more positive, like future plans or enjoyable memories. And we didn't exactly had the latter.

It wasn't usual for Kasumi to look straight in the eyes, a little quirk we might've shared, and whatever the hidden underlying reasons it had, it could also emphasise the words spoken.

"We should try not to die," I replied with a made-up naïve smile, being perfectly aware of the dangers yet still sticking to the 'joking and distractions' pattern. "There are many other interesting things to do rather than funerals."

Leaving the café that I added to my bookmarks, we headed for the hangars.

Continued to The Docks

Finding a lost ship was easy, Willow had record of well over 60% for that. Finding something that was hidden was much harder, and that's what Willow felt like she was up against now. The station had been very accommodating to an injured EVA tech asking for favours from the dock crews, or a little time in the medical lab, but tracking down information about Citi's supply lines was proving a challenge.

Talking with the sellers at the Pilots Market confirmed what she suspected. What was sold to the station workers in exchange for the meal tokens, was brought in by independent pilots that bypassed the bulk buyers and brokers. The only new information Willow did learn was that the people honouring their tokens to was not Citi Management, it was the biggest Imperial finance company managing slaves on Citi Gateway.

That didn't make any sense at all. Why would a company that makes its money managing slaves and their contracts, compensate local sellers for worthless meal tokens?

Perhaps Mark would be worth talking to about his contract holders.
23 Aug 2023, 2:53pm
The stick from her extract bottle danced its way to the other side of her mouth again as Willow read the replay from the finance and manpower company that owned most of the slaves working on Citi right now. It was polite, and well written, but it pretty much said, none of your business and we will not help you with any further inquiries. Fortunately, Mark had listened to the gossip amongst the imperials, and picked up on some rumours that kind of meshed with what Willow had been told after asking questions around the Pilots Market.

According a liaison officer for the slaves, a deal had been struck between an Imperial nob and the local caffs and fast food joints to supply them directly. That way, vendors could give decent meals for the tokens, and the manpower company didn't mind honouring those tokens to redeem with Citi management later, as a good will gesture to all the workers.

Originally, privet contractors like Willow would pay for their food with their Citi ID card, and the cost would be added to their pay as her contract had promised. But to save money, Citi management had changed that to a token system, controlling where a worker could buy their meals, and how much food the company would have to pay for. Citi management didn't try that with the slaves Manpower company, because there would be a risk of them taking their work force elsewhere if Citi tried to play with their contract like that.

The problem was, the Nobel that brokered the deal had apparently stopped flying in supplies a while ago. As Vasil had said while they were talking in the bar, it would take more then one ship to supply CIti, so that pilot had to have had others flying supplies as well. It was time to check the docking registry, but Willow had a feeling her CIti ID, and good will with the dock staff would only go so far. She would try to avoid looking into restricted files, but that tended to be where the best answers were.

She booked another Apex to the station where Bramble was docked, so she could pick up a few of the tools that didn't appear on any manifest or insurance form, just in case she needed them.

Using a keyboard with one hand was getting easier every day. Willow was tempted to hop on a liner and visit a good medical centre with a bone regenerator, but that would revel to the guys that she had more credits than she was letting on. The idea of getting a station tech job was to get back to basics, and find a new firm ground to stand on after the drama with Descartes. Thanks to that horror, Willow had forgotten to appreciate how well she was doing thanks to the liberties afforded to a pilot with a kick ass ship.

With her injury there was very little to do, and if Willow was really a station technician, she'd be in debt thanks to the bills and pittance Citi gave her as sick pay. The Silvia mystery had ignited Willows passion for finding what was lost, and putting together a scanner profile of the woman had got Willow back in the investigation mood. The mystery of the missing food was mundane enough to be a good distraction, with out going high stakes and action.

According to the public terminal, station traffic hadn't fallen as she had suspected it would have if supplies were running short. If anything, short stay station traffic had increased, and the ground crews said they were as busy as ever. Maybe with all the Goid activity around the bubble, other systems were offering better prices, and Citi just couldn't food traders.

To find out, she would need to compare market prices around the bubble. That was easy, every pilot had software to do that. The other thing, was checking who had what in their warehouse on the station, and that was snooping. Illegal snooping. Willow had asked the Network for help with that, but they wanted to relay their intrusion through her ship. Using the stations on communication network directly was a problem apparently, and her current remote access unit was out of date tech now. So, the hacker she was in touch with lightened Willows account a little, and had a new top of the line RAU dispatched that should arrive in a few hours.

That was good news, because the hacker said it'd be a real help if Willow could fit a filter to one of Citi Gateways external receivers. They even offered her a hefty discount on Willows next five requests if she could get that done. The work its self would not be hard, even one handed. The hard part would be getting in her EVA suit one handed, and getting on and off the station without being caught.

Getting off the station to go walk-about wasn't much of a problem, but getting back in undetected was the trick. It would be real easy if she could fly her own ship. Willow didn't fancy trying to jump onto a vessel heading for the slot with out the pilot or station cameras catching her, and bypassing an airlock alert was dangerous as well as another chance to get caught. Instead, she asked Damran if she could come out with his team to get some hours in a EVA suit logged. Besides, she could get into the damn thing without help right now.

It was good to catch up with the guys again, and meet her replacement on the fight out. Being delivered to the the ass end of the station by Type 6 beat the hell out of spacewalking there too. After hanging around for a while, Willow made an excuse to go enjoy the scenery, and got to work on a receiver as a fair walk away from any active work sites. Fitting a filter was easy, even one handed, the tricky part was putting in a bypass so she could fit the thing without a fault being detected on the operators panel. For Willow, that was still a pretty normal job, though she did take extra care this time, because she usually did the task with two hands.

With the bypass in place, Willow opened the box that protected the more delicate internals and saw there was already an extra filter fitted here. So, someone else wanted access to the stations mainframe. So the normal procedure was to report it, and remove it, but then Willow would have to explain what she was doing poking around inside the receivers in the first place. Instead, Willow gathered what info she could on it, and when to find another receiver cluster to hijack.

Back on the station, Willow sent the access information for the filter she had fitted to The Network along with everything she had on the mystery filter. Now there was nothing to do by wait till the new remote interface unit arrived. Without that, The Network couldn't find the information Willow wanted. Food was calling, and everywhere was out of Un-meat-abel, so Willow left a message on one of The Networks BBs "Tell your guy I'll be in the bar"

Maybe the machines up there still had some Spec-vac-uler tri-packs. They would do in a pinch.

Someone else had just paid for warehouse space. Only for a week and the manifest said it was foodstuffs; it hadn't come in from Eravate, so it didn't set off any alarms until Apex read the company name.

"Bad Investments Limited? Really? Ok bad investments, lets see what your all about"

It looked looked like a pilot bringing in something that would make a few credits because they happened to think of it before they left. OK fine, but BIL wasn't a name he could forget, and he'd never seen that company here before. Bad Investments Limited wasn't on any registry, so they were new or fake. He'd have to have people on Jørn's payroll search the cargo in case they were smuggling something in.

"What the fuck is is with Imps feeding this station?" asked Apex tapping the case of his deck.

The pilot was just like any Imp anywhere. Nose so far in the air, it had come around, and gone up his own ass. He's the one that had run those promotional vids a while back for his families charity. It was the recipient that raised more questions.

Willow Thorn was easy to find out about. She was a station tech on sick leave for being a dumbass. For a station tech on sick pay, she didn't seem to have any problems paying her bills for an apartment on the habitation ring. On the drip of credits Citi was giving her, she should be finding it hard to live in a box by a dumpster.

"Why is that old fart giving you a 50 tons of food Willow?" Asked Apex as he brought up Willows file and looked at her image. "Oh, right, he's into kids I guess. Fukin Imps are all perverted freaks"

Tapping his deck again, Apex wondered if there was a connection between this and other recent blips that had come up on Jørn's watch list. Nothing big enough blips to report, but too many to be coincidence now. Apex decided he better let the Barbarian know. Connecting a scrambled line, Apex called his boss.

"Jørn, its Apex, net surveillance on Citi. Had a few things come up that are starting to bother me. I'm starting an investigation, but I want to lay out what I got so you can do something right now if you feel its needed ok?"

Apex explained his suspicions and waited for Jørn to answer. He was taking his time letting Apex wonder if he was about to get roasted for wasting the big mans time.

"The imp, watch his ship, search the cargo he delivered. I want to know every move they make on that station from now on. If either of them get into my business, kill them yes?"

"Yes sir, I'll use the stations cams and have people ready to cover the blind spots"

"Good. Keep me informed"

The Barbarian ended the call, and Apex didn't waist any time doing as he was told.
31 Aug 2023, 2:43pm
The device floated in front of her face as she struggled to get a top over he cast. Getting dressed was still a little painful, but at least she could deal with a call without having to uses her one good hand.

"But like, I didn't book it and I don't know why my name is on it, so"

She was cut off again. The warehouse guy was giving her a hard time because she didn't have a destination for the stuff coming into his oh-so-valuable storage space.

"What's it matter if the space has been like, paid for? So what if its only like, 5 tons?"

It sounded like he was pissed because the space wasn't being filled, and no one was lined up to buy the cargo. This kind of guy didn't like stuff hanging around his kingdom that could upset his plans, and cause people to interfere with his timetable. Willow, being an engineer got it, but this guy really needed to chill.

"Look man, I didn't ask for this. Ok wait, maybe I did, but I like, didn't know it was going to just like, turn up you know? So, ok like, I moved 50 tones real quick last time yeah? So just relax"

So yeah, that was a mistake. Telling him to relax was like kicking his dog or something. He was shouting so loud now, his voice was seriously distorted by Willows pad, so she hung up.

What she needed was a spread sheet. Last time, the caterers on at the market had totally taken advantage of her. Yeah, she hadn't paid for the stuff in the first place, but that didn't mean it was ok to mislead her on the actual prices, buy it all up, and sell it on to other traders. The idea was to float the independent local retailers, so the station workers could get good food on the meals allowance CIti management was giving them.

While Willow was going through her statements and sales recipes from the first mystery 50, she got another message about Bad Investments Limited. Some guy with a fancy name wanted to talk to her about "merging import interests" Her mind was all over the place now. The spread sheet was job one, and job two was finding the owner of BIL, and giving them the damn headache.

Thanks to a half-load of broken chicken wings, Willow had a good idea who had made her the public face of a company she didn't own, and wasn't employed by, and he needed both thanks and a poke in the eye with a lemony finger. She posted a message on The Networks board and waited for the call. It came back in under five minuets.

"Yeah hi again. So like, I need all the info you got on a company called Bad Investments Limited bringing low-end foodstuffs to Citi Gateway, and I'd start with Vee. Um, I mean, Vasil.. something. He's an imperial guy that's like, always visiting here. Like please? Oh, and like, he's a good guy so you know, like its not that kind of job you know? Thanks"

Ok, soon she'd know for sure who fault it was she had to learn about catering supplies, and she hoped some lemon juice would turn up around about the time so got confirmation that Bad Investments Ltd's owner was back on station. For now, getting a spread sheet sorted would be good enough so wilie burger joint owners didn't con the crap out of her again.

One of the perks of being wealthy --and also being part of a charity gaining notoriety--was that places catering to the wealthy and influential were more than happy to help those people be anonymous. So, before leaving the Chateau Dans Le Ciel, Vasil checked the balance on a shadow account the hotel hosted and had set up for him.

He’d been off station for several days after taking Bianca and Lorenzo DiMatteo back to Emerald and wanted to see If any payments had been made from the account in that time. Pilots dropping random shipments of food at the station got paid directly from the shadow account. As far as anyone was concerned, a trader named Factura Mi held the account and was paying for the deliveries. Along with Bad Investments Limited and the broken chicken wings, the name was another of Vasil’s subtle jokes, being loosely translated from Romanian as “Bill me.”

Factura had made several small payments, indicating to Vasil that supplies were beginning to trickle in. He had some time before the next set of VIPs needed to be taken to Emerald and thought that maybe he’d stop by the bar or wander around the market and see if anyone had a special on broken chicken wings.

"I know I know, just let me check with The Barbarian, ten you can report it. I'll be fast" Apex told the security office.

Three dead bodies stuffed into a cargo canister, stabbed and slashed to ribbons. It sounded like something The Barbarian would do, or have done on his behalf, but he hadn't told Apex anything about it. Citi security were eager to start an investigation, but he needed to know what Jørn had to say. Another call before Apex had any solid answers about the red flags that had come up, and now a trippel murder. It would be much less of a problem if Jørn had the men killed and didn't bother to tell Apex about it.

The transmission to Jørn was connected and securely scrambled, so Apex didn't have to watch what he said.

"Er, Apex from Citi Gateway. Ok, there are three dead Cleavers in a cargo canister up here. They are, or were responsible for recovering contraband for the Eravate interest on Citi. security want to start their investigation, but I wanted to check with you first sir. You didn't forget to inform me of some corrective actions did you?"

There was no pause before his answer this time.

"That is not something I would forget yes? Let them investigate, and you investigate also. If there is another player making a move, I want them stopped. You understand me yes?"

"Crystal clear Jørn. I'll see.." The connection was already dead. Jørn didn't hang around on calls, he was a very busy man. Apex was eager to make sure Jørn never had to be bust taking corrective actions with him personally.

Vasil returned to the hotel and informed the concierge he did not want to be disturbed for the next two hours, figuring that would be enough time to get a feel for what the offer for Bad Investments Ltd was about. While he was willing to accept that it was just his usual luck stumbling into profit, something about the offer caused him concern, but he could not determine why. Once settled in the room, he established a direct secure link to the contact info Willow had forwarded him, adding as a preamble so the recipient would know who was requesting a secure link:

"Mr. Ulfson, my name is Vasil Vasilescu. I believe we have business to discuss regarding certain bad investments."
05 Sep 2023, 9:29pm
A thick Swedish accent started speaking before Vasil finished his last word.

"No discussion needed. You take credits and stop. Good credits for bad business, no need to discuss. Tell me what account needs credits, and I pay you now."
05 Sep 2023, 9:46pm
Okay, so it was the worst of the possibilities Vasil had considered. That was another plus in the "take the money and run" column, but Vasil has told Willow he'd do what he could, so he was as direct to the Swede as the man was to him.

"Talk about throwing good money after bad. Paying 200 mil for a bullshit two-bit operation is bad business. So either you are an idiot or there is more at stake. I have two counter-offers. One: Three hundred million and shit stops right now. Or two: You save your money, get five percent of the take going forward and all you need to do is let the girl supply the grease pit fuckin stalls with the crap only slaves and wrench-turners are going to eat."
05 Sep 2023, 10:26pm
"Stupid? You give your credits to little girl, and she gets robbed by greasy men. You sell to buyers. Buyers sell to distributors, and they sell for right price to greasy men"

There was a long huff and then the line went silent. After a moment, it picked up again.

"Your business is shit. Your business rubs on my work, and my work covered in your shit. You take two twenty-five, give it to your sister for ego and virtue. Then you take your shit away. Two twenty-five million now. Take it and stop, or I flush your shit away"

Vasil had gambled on whether or not the counter offers would be accepted and knew there was a chance that their counter would be less if he pissed them off. He shrugged it off. He’d taken a chance on being aggressive and it ended up not working.

Vasil was silent for a few seconds, considering the possible outcomes of crossing people like this. Few outcomes ended well for anyone involved. Though the fortunes he had amassed could probably fund a protracted economic--and likely very physical--conflict, he also knew that any publicity concerning it would hurt Octavia’s efforts to advance herself and the family.

Sometimes a person had to set ego aside and take the loss.

No good deed…,” he said in Romanian, then to the Swede, “Send the money Factura Mi, account info to follow.”

Vasil ended the call. There was more he could have said to those on the other side of the line, but he’d already pissed them off and knew they’d not listen.
